Starbase Aegis

In 2370, the United Federation of Planets and the Cardassian Union signed an historic treaty establishing a Demilitarized Zone along their shared border. Colonies and territory within this zone, ranging over fifty light years from the Hugora Nebula to the Argolis Cluster, had been the source of numerous disputes during previous decades. Reaction to this treaty proved unfavorable, leading to the rise of the militant group known as the Maquis, which threatened renewed conflict over the region. Starfleet strategists sought to ease tensions without unduly increasing its presence. Although Starbase 211 was well-positioned along the border, Starbase 310 proved too remote to respond effectively to flare-ups within the zone.

Maquis and Klingon Interdiction
2371 - 2372

The Canar system, newly under Federation jurisdiction, was selected as an additional anchor from which to defend the neutrality of the DMZ. A small spacedock-variant station would be deployed above the second of three planets, home of a fledging colony of nearly 1500 people on its class-H surface.

This starbase was designated Aegis (pronounced js) to emphasize its role of protection and help ease both Cardassian and colonist fears that the facility's mission would be an offensive one. As an addition concession, a former officer from the Klingon Empire was placed in command of the station. HoD TSara zantai T'Zay became Aegis' first Commanding Officer, with Commander Jennan Ayer (of Trill) as Executive Officer. Starbase Aegis was deployed in geosynchronous orbit of Canar II and entered operational service on August 18, 2371 (Stardate 9508.18). The 127-deck facility included impressive defensive shields, as well as external docking and repair facilities able to support vessels up to Galaxy and Sovereign classes. The station was also outfitted with four wings of fighter craft and four runabouts. The I.K.S. naS SuS'a', a Klingon scout craft, was assigned as support vessel.

Within weeks of entering service, the Klingon Empire launched an unexpected invasion of Cardassia, adding a new level of complexity to the station's environment. In addition to political intrigue throughout 2372, Aegis was nearly overrun by a swarm of space-borne, carnivorous insects which killed nearly fifty of her crew. A second disaster was averted when the station helped the colony survive a subnova of the Canar sun. Although war with the Klingons soon expanded to include the Federation, Aegis continued to defend the region.

Dominion War and Colonial Politics
2373 - 2374

Civilian relations reached a low point with the resignation of Commander Ayer and the defection of second officer Dakla Pierson to the Maquis. In early 2373, Chief Science Officer Commander Sorehl (of Vulcan) was inducted as Executive Officer. The political environment shifted again with the annexation of Cardassia by the Dominion, compelling deployment of the Oberth-class U.S.S. Perseus, NCC-53848, as an addition mobile defense platform. For several months, Aegis served as a haven for defeated Klingon forces and Maquis survivors of the Cardassian purge led by Gul Dukat.

In August 2373, the station was physically moved from the Canar system in response to a Dominion edict to abandon former Cardassian holdings. The secret agenda of this withdrawal was to use Aegis as the staging area for a preemptive strike from a hidden location in the Decelea asteroid field. Six weeks later, the joint Klingon-Federation Operation vIS'oBe was launched from Aegis. This action was the opening volley of the Dominion War, destroying shipyards above Torros III and coincided with the mining of the Bajoran wormhole and loss of Deep Space Nine. The I.K.S. naS SuS'a', with HoD TSara aboard, was also lost with all hands during the battle. Captain Sorehl assumed command of Starbase Aegis on October 4, 2373 (Stardate 9710.04), with former Operations Chief Commander Eriied Sej (of Trill) as Executive Officer, but was taken prisoner a few months later during a peace overture to the Dominion.

Captain Thomas Halloway, formerly of the U.S.S. Victory, NCC-1764-C, assumed temporary command in early 2374. Halloway launched a bold initiative which recaptured the Canar system and restored Aegis in orbit there. Captain Sorehl resumed command following his recovery during a clash with Jem'Hadar forces near the Ovetra system in mid-2374. Aegis continued to serve as a construction facility and staging platform for Allied operations, aiding an invasion of the Chin'toka system and rescuing the Romulan Warbird Sionex. With the wartime reassignment of Commander Sej, Commander Stephen J. "Bull" Bulloc was installed as Executive Officer on October 26, 2374 (9810.26). Amidst political upheaval, Canar II elected former Ambassador Joseph Briel as colonial governor, defeating an openly anti-Federation candidate. By mid-2375, Aegis personnel took an active part in the closing battles of the Dominion War. The U.S.S. Perseus was destroyed while repelling a Jem'Hadar strike on the colony.

Captain Sorehl lead a mission to encourage revolt among the Cardassian 12th Brigade, while much of the crew joined a final clash with Dominion-Breen forces near Sarpedion V.

Post-War Transition
2375 - 2376

With the end of the Dominion War and the removal of the threat posed by the Cardassian Union, the United Federation of Planet's found itself in need to modernize it's fleets for non-war based exploration. This need quickly turned to the many fleets and stations located near the battle lines and the former Cardassian DMZ. As such, Starbase Aegis would fall victim to such changes. On August 11th, 2376 (Stardate: 0008.11), Station Starbase Aegis was decommissioned as a stand alone Federation Outpost. Per the request of the Canar Government, a joint operation was in place to overtake control of the facility which had become a major port of call for commercial traffic and travel due to several Ferengi and Federation established trade routes. Though no longer called Aegis, Starbase 405 continues to remain operational to this day, using the facilities once built for defense, to help Canar II continue to prosper as a full member of the Federation.

During it's time in service above Canar II, Starbase Aegis assisted in turning the fledgling colony into a major metropolitan institution. Assisting with the smooth transition in government after the death of the colonial governor, Gar Awi was defeated in a run to fill the vacant role by the a former Federation Ambassador stationed on Aegis, Joseph Briel. His presence in the Canar government would not be alone, with retired Chief of Security Major Muldoon acting as the Canar System Marshall for a time and Ferengi Diplomatic Ambassador Drankum filling the role as Director of Canarian Ministry of Commerce & Trade until the station's re-classification.

The name Aegis continues to be highly publicized in Federation news circles, as the name and many of the facility's crew were transferred to a new facility in orbit around occupied Cardassian Prime. A multinational alliance, formed in part through the Ferengi Ambassador Drankum, joined forces to create a new facility which is now called Sky Harbor Aegis. Including an orbital and ground base for operations, the new mission of this "protector" is to help maintain the peace and prevent another Dominion War, while helping the people of Cardassia recover from the disaster which ravaged their planet. Through Federation, Romulan, Klingon, Ferengi, Bajoran and Cardassian assistance, the station continues the proud tradition launched so many years ago.
