567th Attack Fighter Group


In the late 2360s, the Starfleet Corps. of Engineers developed and tested several designs for the purposes of creating a dedicated modern day fighter craft for Starfleet. The project included several deployments of experimental craft, most of which failed and would have resulted in the program's cancellation if not for the start of the Dominion War.

During the conflict, the need for fighters became clear in large scale engagements. Furthermore, since such craft had been adopted by other governments, not having a comparable design proved to be a disadvantage in early engagements. After the war's end, the evaluation for long term use and designs of these ships continued to be a priority.

In 2382, thru a proposal created by the Starfleet Corps. of Engineers, Starfleet Command initiated a program which would deploy single unit fighters aboard Federation starships and starbases. Similiar programs had existed during the Dominion War, but been discontinued at the end of the conflict.

The first of these newly designed fighter groups were to be deployed by late 2382, with the entire project scheduled to be fully online by the end of 2387. Numerous designs were selected, including several light, medium and heavy fighter designs. Depending on the capabilities of the starship or starbase, ships would be assigned with either seperate crews or an educational training program would be put in place to rate existing crew members.

While the 400 series fighter groups were assigned to smaller starships, the 500 series were designated for deployment on fixed stations and are expected to be completely online by the end of 2385.

Several of these craft arrived aboard Aegis in late 2384 with all units delivered by February 2385. Sections within the two main shuttlebays of the station have been set for their exclusive use.
