"At ease soldier!" The drill sergeant commanded.

Acrop dropped his soldiers, still keeping eye contact with the sergeant.

"Mr. Acrop.  Do you know what you are in for?  I don't think ya do!  You think this is some game soldier?  Let me tell you your scores son.  Skateboarding- you can't even do an ollie!  100 meter dash- the last time 27 seconds won this event was never!

Jello Wrestling- the goal is to defeat your opponent not eat more jello than him!  What do you have to say for yourself soldier?" The drill sergeant demanded an answer.

"Well sir..  I'm hoping to improve with practice, sir!" Acrop returned.

"That's cute soldier! Almost made me grin!  But it's not enough soldier!  The only way you are going to win even one of these events is to work, work, work day and night.  When you are in engineering you should be running  IN place!  When you are walking down the hall I expect to see you shoot down it or run like the wind.  Are we understood soldier!" The sergeant got out.

"Yes sir!" Acrop thought for a second. "Computer end program!"

Acrop picked up a towel and wiped the sweat from his brow.  He heard about the program from a couple people in ten forward.  Supposedly most competitors were using it.  Acrop had gotten the impression that this was intended to be fun and games.  Apparently not so!  It wasn't that he wasn't physically fit.... he WAS.  But he was the type of person who was extremely strong..  but wouldn't win at arm wrestling.  Someone who wasn't as fast..as they were quick.

He walked to the lounge and took a seat at a table.  Quickly he put his head down.

A female officer walked up to him..  his vision was too blurry for him to quite recognize.

"Hey there!" she exclaimed while taking a seat.

"Hey! Long time no see!" Acrop hoped he was right.

"True.  I see your competing eh?  Ready to get some medals?"She asked.

Acrop dug his head further into his arms.  "Hardly.  My times are so below par its beyond laughable."

"Stick with it kiddo, I'll see ya round." with that she got up and left.

Acrop got up himself.  It was time to do some serious sprinting.  He walked to a holo and set up the track.  The roars of people who were just dying to see some athletic competition could be heard.

"Computer...  no fans please!" Acrop ordered.  "And no competitors."

Quickly, all the noise subsided as thousands of people faded away.

The shot blast was heard.

Acrop ran with all his might...  keeping in his lane keeping compact.  Slowly, raising his upper body upright.

He ran and ran, looking to his sides and not seeing the competitors he almost expected to be there.  The yellow strip of tape had gotten bigger now...  it was 15 meters away.  Acrop lowered his head trying to get every edge he could he put all his energy into it.  Beads of sweat were forming and falling off his chin.  He was 3 meters away..he made his FINAL STRETCH........................

Acrop jumped up in the air, proud of himself.

The scoreboard said it all:  19.85.

Acrop looked up to read it.  Around double what he needed to win.  His smile quickly turned upside down.

"At least I cut about a billion seconds off my time!" he said to himself."I'll just keep plugging away."
