A meeting with t'Ring, Part2

Subject: A meeting with t'Ring, Part2

Date: Thu, May 1, 1997 8:57 AM

From: LtHerel

t’Ring sits still, her fingers steepled, looking at Herel.  "You strapped this patient in.  And then you finished?  What were you thinking as you finished?"

"Thinking…  Did I think?  Yes…  I focused on the straps.  I pulled them tight and secured them.  I finished.  I, my thoughts…  Yes, I thought that it was good that she was unconscious.  She wouldn’t have to experience this…  event."

   "Why?"

"Why?  Well, because it was traumatic of course, and frightening."

   "What was?"

"Knowing the ship was going to explode."

"Did you know it was going to explode?"

"Well, of course, it was on auto destruct."

"What did it look like when it exploded?"

   "Well, it…  I don’t know!  I didn’t see it."

   "What else do you feel?"

"It was difficult to breathe.  It’s like there’s no air.  And my head!  It hurts.  My God, t’Ring, I’d forgotten that I had a headache.  It was an ache from the back of my neck, like tension."

"You finished with the patient.  You thought her fortunate to not experience the event.  What did you look at next, what did you think?"

"I looked at the wall past her head.  What did I think?  I don’t remember!  I couldn’t breathe.  My head hurt.  It was happening.  It was starting.  Ann!  I think I called to Ann."  Herel stares intently past t’Ring, trying to remember more.  t’Ring waits.  Herel drops her gaze, exhales, and looks at her.  "That’s it.  That’s all there is."

"You said it was happening.  What was happening?"

   "I don’t know.  It was…  I don’t know."

"Did you see the ship explode?"

Herel shakes her head.  "No, I must have blacked out before it did."

"That is helpful.  Relax now.  I have scheduled a meeting with Doctor Stewart.  After that, we will bring you into the lab and do full scans.  I will ask you at that time to again recount these events.  I have also ordered full reports from the scans of the Republic during the time index before, during, and after the explosion."

"t’Ring, as far as I can tell, there were no memory suppression or restoration fields in place, as there was with the other time this happened with the Metrons.  I can’t see how anything generated by the explosion would be similar.  What if this event were caused by a less invasive stimulus?"

"Indeed, it is that very possibility that is of concern.  As I receive more reports and do further exams on you, I will systemically investigate all possibilities."

Herel laughs a little, "As only you can do so well.  t’Ring, I expect to work with you on this.  That’s okay, isn’t it?  I have done extensive research into the field since the last event."

"To the extent that you can be objective, I value your input.  There may be areas, however, when your personal closeness to the situation will hinder your objectivity.  You would be most helpful by providing us as much information as possible as we question you."

"Of course.  When do you have the exams scheduled?"

"I will talk with Stewart this afternoon, and will have the team set for the following morning.  I will meet with you again tomorrow to discuss the procedure in depth.  Do you have any other questions?"

Herel sighs, "I can’t think of any.  The only questions I have are the ones we’ll be investigating."
