Western Games

As some of my shipmates know, I am mildly obsessed with Westerns. Just a bit. You really can't tell by my call sign or anything that I like Westerns either. :D

For gamers out there, wanted to give a heads up about two western style games that I am REALLY enjoying.

Darkwatch - take undead, Vampires, Cowboys and the Old West and throw it all into a game. And it works! The game developers are High Moon Studios.

Darkwatch is currently out for the Playstation 2 and the X Box. There is on-Line play for X Box, and the PS2 version offers an extra level.

Darkwatch is a Gothic Horror meets Old West first person shooter with some great spaghetti western style cinematics thrown in. You play as cowboy Jericho Cross who is caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. The gameplay is crisp, the environments are gorgeous and well done in a dark, creepy manner.

Since this is undead themed, there is various blood and green gore, and the game does carry a mature rating.

Check out the developer site if you want to research:

GUN - Gun is done along more traditional Western TV show and film lines. The developer is Neversoft of Tony Hawk fame. I know it is out for X Box and the PC. The X Box has no on line play, I am not sure about the PC version.

It is a third person action shooter with some RPG elements, centering on a lone hero, Colton, taking on the bad guys. It can be bloody. In addition to the main storyline, you can embark on side quests (Bounty Hunting, Lawman, Gambler) to build up your gunslinging, melee, or horseback riding abilities. An interesting gameplay method is a gunslinging mode where you can slow down everything into "bullet time" and score some sweet headshots or weapon shots or whatever.

To travel from one place to another, you can walk or ride horseback. The graphics fit the game nicely. The game reminds me of a low end Grand Theft Auto meets the Old West, and I mean that in a nice way. I can see where the game can be boring if your not all into the West, but the nice variety of missions and the action that does pop up evens it all out.

This game also carries a mature rating.

So if you like westerns, first person shooters, or are looking for something different, I recommend these games.

Thanks all.
