"Illegal Aliens"

"Illegal Aliens"

Lieutenant Commander Brian Graham & Lieutenant j.g. Laarell Teykier

A Joint Duty Log

USS Morningstar

Starfate 200511.16

Brian entered a shuttlecraft for what must have seemed to be the millionth time in the past few days. In reality, it was more like the third, but still, that was a lot for the short period of time. Regardless, Brian entered carrying several satchels. Not only did he get odd looks from the crewmembers performing their duties in the shuttlebay but also the other team members that were accompanying him on this mission. Meron, a Benzite, had been chosen as the pilot. She had already proven herself during the Morningstar’s descent onto this planet, so Brian moved her up in the rotation and assigned her again to this mission. Pearman was also along, Security officer, fine record, lieutenant, experience in covert operations. Brian had snagged him before he had headed out with one of the search parties. Finally, Brian had pulled Lt. Teykier from temporary engineering duty and assigned her to the team as well. Her experience in the science division would most likely prove invaluable with tricorder operation and interspecies interaction. Besides, an unbalanced away team was just asking for trouble.

Loading up, Brian also briefed everybody on the operation. Contact with Summers away team had been established but they were outside of the Federation approved zone. The shuttle would be used as a transport and as a distraction. With Al-Ucardian attention fixed on the shuttle, hopefully no one would notice three extra hooded figures on the street. The shuttle was to continue on a wandering flightpath but still stay within the general area and stand by for extraction when the awayteam rendezvoused with Summer’s team and, hopefully, Commander Corizon.

The shuttle lifted off and exited the bay, moving in a wayward pattern to the final destination that Meron had come up with. The shuttle headed roughly northeast, and would turn west and follow along the border of the Federation approved zone. Brian handed out the equipment. Tricorders, phasers, and finally the hooded cloaks. Brian had seen these garments before on others on this planet and hoped these would help them blend in better. Besides, they would provide a great defense against the incessant rain that persisted on falling from the sky. There were two backpacks, each with two extra cloaks in them for the other members when the two teams converged. Brian took one and Pearman took the other. It was a little uncomfortable, having the lousy pack on over the cloak and Brian fiddled with the straps, giving him more space to move.

Brian reflected a bit. He had informed Doctor Delgado about his leaving and left Morningstar in her capable hands. He was confident they would be able to handle themselves just fine. Brian was more concerned if the Admiral were to return and wonder what had happened to most of the crew, but with the shore leave, not everyone was bound to be on the ship anyway.

“Sir, we’ve reached the border. Altering course to bearing 250, mark 0, keeping 600 feet from the outlined border.”

Brian moved up to the pilot area. “Good, slow our speed as we go along the border.”

“Aye sir. At what coordinates do you want me to set down at?”

Brian was distracted by looking over the map of the area. Already, long range sensors had picked up and Al-Ucardian vessel moving toward their position. It should be there in five minutes, but the shuttle would be where it needed to be in two. “We’re not setting down,” he said offhandedly.

“Sir?”

“Setting down would tip our hand. We’re going to jump onto one of the roofs of the nearby buildings. Don’t alter your speed or course, just stay steady, follow the border another half kilometer and then fly in your distracting pattern, and wait for us. If they give you too much trouble, head back to Morningstar and we’ll head back ourselves. No point in you getting too many police vessels around, or getting yourself killed. Understood?”

Meron complied, though she was not too happy about it. Brian knew she wasn’t, he wouldn’t be either in the same situation, but he didn’t want to give anything away. Moving back where Teykier and Pearman were, Brian told them how they were going to get on the ground. All officer’s were trained on this possible insertion method, so Brian expected no problems. “Pearman, jump first, then Teykier, I’ll follow last. We’ll wait to see if the craft follows the shuttle before we move out off the building’s roof, then we head for where the other team was last reported. Are you both up to this?”

Brian nodded, glad to hear it. Meron called up from the front. “We are within 600 feet of the desired coordinates. Estimate 45 seconds until arrival.”

Good enough, not much time to talk themselves out of it. Brian moved over to the side hatch and opened it. Immediately, the sound of the all-too-familiar rain greeted him, some coming into the shuttle. Brian stuck his head out of the hatch and looked for an appropriate building. The shuttle was flying pretty close to all the structures, so the jump would be very short. Good thing too since they had no gear, nor the airtime to use such gear. Seeing one that looked adequate, Brian got Pearman ready. “Land right,” was the only advice Brian had. Pearman nodded and was immediately gone, making the short jump onto the roof. Brian turned his head but Teykier was already jumping, disappearing as well out of the portal. Brian didn’t have much time to think about it. He moved over and launched himself, hitting with both feet, collapsing, rolling, and staying down so there was little chance of being spotted by anyone.

Bah, the roof was soaked, and now so was Brian. He looked over, the other two were prone as well, Teykier already had a tricorder out, probably charting the other ship. After a few tense moments, she gave a wave. All three sprung up and took stock, everyone ok: no injuries, no lost gear. Now they had to get off this thing, hopefully these people heard of fire-escapes. Moving over to the side, Brian looked down what appeared to be an alley. This planet sure had a lot of alleys. It had a ladder though. “Ok, I’ll signal you two if it is clear,” Brian said, and worked his way down. Running out of rungs and hitting pavement, Brian looked left and right. Barely lit, no movement. Signaling, Brian kept an eye out. Seconds later he heard a set of feet hitting the pavement, and then another several seconds after that.

“Ok, we’ll make our way to the last known coordinates. Walk normal, act casual, stick together. Let’s go.”

Exiting the alley, the group moved along the street. Unfolding his tricorder inside his cloak, Brian got a quick location reading and stopped, one step before the border of the allowed zone. Shutting the tricorder, Brian looked back. “Here we go, everybody.”

With that, they started walking again, crossing the line. They were now officially illegal aliens.
