History

With her mother dead before Jocelyn had reached two years of age, she spent the majority of her childhood in the New Berlin Facility for Orphans. Her mother had been a common laborer who died in an industrial accident while working in the New Berlin shipyards. With no knowledge of her birth father’s identity and no other living relatives listed on record, she had been given over as a ward of the Luna colony to be cared for and educated until she could be adopted. Despite her poor beginnings, Jocelyn had a relatively happy childhood in the Facility where she learned to enjoy school and excelled in academics. Adoption came shortly after her ninth birthday when her new parents came to collect her and transport her to her home on Earth, near San Francisco. Not only did Jocelyn gain loving parents in Grath and Serena Nidari, but she also found she had a very protective older brother, Joel. Together they lived happily in their beach house on the Pacific coast.

With even more resources available to her, she continued to absorb as much information as possible, specializing in foreign languages and history. She also found she had natural talent in martial arts, grappling, and submission techniques, and grew to love her physical training as much as her traditional education. She applied to Starfleet Academy at the tender age of fourteen and was accepted a year later. She graduated in three years and was delighted (despite the ongoing altercations between the UFP, NFA, and Romulan Empire) to accept her first posting on the U.S.S. Mercedes, working in security, which came as no surprise to those that knew her well.

During her fourth year of service aboard the Mercedes, Jocelyn was approached by a mysterious Commander claiming to represent Section 31, a secret organization of which Starfleet disavowed all knowledge. Intrigued by their specialized training programs and the very nature of the organization itself, Jocelyn joined and returned to Starfleet Academy to complete some unusual courses. Her involvement with the Section was classified as were the various assignments she completed for them. Most of her missions involved some degree of spying on the New Federation Alliance and the colonies near their claimed territory. During those travels, she was exposed to the true horror of the UFP and the extreme methods that they sometimes used, many of which were conducted with full backing of Vice-Admiral Duren and the Federation Council.

In 2371, Jocelyn’s adopted parents were killed in a UFP raid. Traveling to one of the outlying Federation colonies in their personal shuttle to visit family, they were mistakenly identified as NFA agents and were attacked by a Federation cruiser. Though they survived the initial attack, their injuries were found to be extensive and they could not be saved. Serena lasted only six hours. Her husband managed to cling to life for another four. By the time they died, their identities had been confirmed and the incident was reported. The Federation Captain claimed that they had been “acting suspiciously” and “refused to be boarded”. Of course, those were justifiable reasons according to the Federation Council and the Captain was given only a reprimand on his official record. Jocelyn and her brother Joel (who had also joined Starfleet as an Engineering officer), were paid reparations and given an official apology. It did not seem to be enough. Though they were allowed a month for bereavement, Jocelyn took only one week before returning to duty, citing her desire to work through the situation rather than dwell on it. In retrospect, this would probably be considered as the beginning of the end of her Starfleet career.

In 2373, Jocelyn was reassigned to the U.S.S. Mercedes as their Chief of Security, with a primary directive from Section 31 to ferret out the NFA spy they were sure was aboard. After six months of searching, she discovered the spy to be the second officer, Commander Ian Byrne. Rather than turn him over to Federation authorities, Jocelyn covertly contacted him about aiding the NFA. Together they worked to send classified UFP information to various NFA agents, aiding their defensive efforts and helping to thwart some of the Federation’s attacks. After a year of working as a spy, all the while feeding Section 31 false information, Jocelyn received word through the NFA network that one of Ian’s contacts had been captured, tortured, and had possibly confessed Ian as a conspirator. Not wishing to take any chances, she immediately informed Ian and the two of them left the ship as soon as it docked to resupply, paying a smuggler to take them to New Federation territory and eventually making their way to Cait. With Ian’s backing, Jocelyn obtained the Chief of Tactical Operations position aboard the N.F.S. Reaent in 2376, where she had served since her defection.

Physical and Psychological Profile

Jocelyn has proven herself to be emotionally and psychologically stable, despite the circumstances from which she’s emerged. Though she does harbor a grudge toward the Federation for the death of her adopted parents, she has worked beyond the need for petty revenge in the realization that she can do more good as a stable NFA officer than a suicidal rogue. She can be extremely personable when needed, though she prefers to listen and observe in the background rather than be the center of attention. She is ever careful with her personal associations, but she does not shun physical or emotional attachments. It should be noted that she has never allowed any of her chosen relationships to interfere with her duties.

Though her job requires plenty of brawn, she’s also surprisingly intellectual, studying a variety of different cultures, languages and customs with most of her subjects chosen on the basis of their military or tactical innovations. Physical activity and exercise plays an extremely important part of her life, sometimes bordering on obsession. However, such behavior has kept her in peak physical condition even though she is rapidly approaching middle age. Martial arts and defense training has taught her to be calm in combat situations. Even though she is extremely difficult to anger, she will not hesitate to use her skills when necessary. In combat, she is ruthless and will kill any perceived enemy without hesitation.

Perhaps her only imbalance is her separation from her adopted brother and the guilt she feels in what she considers to be her betrayal of him. Because he remains in Starfleet and has shown a profound hatred for her because of her defection to the NFA, there is no hope for reconciliation at this time. It remains to be seen what circumstances might arise if the two were directly confronted with one another in a combat situation.
