Hey. I've heard about STSF and chat based simmimg for a while now. Until now I have only been interested in PbF, but I want to try something new. So, how do I start?

Welcome, Joe! You can start by clicking the "Schedule" link at the top of the page and finding an academy SIM you'll be able to attend. Make sure to read the "Rules" page too. :)

I just read over the rules. Seems pretty basic. And it appears that there is an Academy Session tonight at 10.

Hey! Welcome to STSF!

Ahh, do be sure to read the Tips from the Moose, the help section and Schedule section to help familiarise yourself on how we play, and htips to graduate and when the acads take place. Goodluck in your STSF career, and hope to see you around. :)

The STSF Chatrooms requires the Java plugin that you can get from Http://www.java.com

When it's time for the academy, log in with the tag "Cdt." before your name so the GM's know you're a cadet. The academy takes place in the "Holodeck" subroom. :)

Though placing the "Cdt" prefix is encouraged it is not mandatory for new players to do. Now that you've introduced yourself, we pretty much know you're a cadet now anyways. B)

Hello. I am the STSF Resident Egomaniac, and I would like to welcome you to the Star Trek Simulation Forum at stsf.net (as opposed to stsf.com; try simming there :) !) Just remember that the secret to simming is to have fun and the secret word is "Quasigeostrophic". B)

Joe,

Welcome to STSF!

I'm using the Java platform (1.5) on Debian GNU/Linux, and it works fine. It shouldn't be much different for you on Red Hat. If you can tell me:

what version of Java you downloaded,

what instructions you followed to install it,

what browser you're using,

and what's happening when Java's supposed to run.

I might be able to help you out.

You can also board PM or IM me.

Make sure you have a copy of your Internet files on Red Hat before you go installing Java on it (whether it be Firefox or Mozilla/Netscape). I have *never* been successful at installing Java on Red Hat, and I've tried multiple times. (Don't take this the wrong way; I also know very little about Linux, other than it hosts my websites great!) I just know I've not had good luck with it... if you do it wrong (which I always have) you can't even open up your browser. :)

Which, my solution, is to reinstall the entire blasted OS! B) Like I said, I don't know anything about Linux outside of web server functions... I've tried to learn, but it has been a slow process. hahaha.

But the others are correct - Java is available for every OS I can think of. It is just the matter of installing it.

hey.

I am running Fedora Core 3, which is basically an open source or Red Hat. I downloaded the JRE 1.5 BIN file, but when I try to open it, it tells me that the file is not recognized. I am using Mozilla Firefox and am on a cable internet connection, approx 2Mb/s at the best times. Right now, the only reason I'm using Linux is because my Master Boot Record for my Windows partition has been corrupted, and I am too lazy to fix it. Therefore, I am stuck on Linux. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Fix your windows and strive to endure.......this was the line fed to my ancestors....in essence......not quoted...mind you....but it may serve you in the near future........ :) B)
