Hobbies, anyone?

29 posts in this topic

What sort of hobbies do the rest of you have? I enjoy writing, sketching, cooking ... and many more things! I thought it would be fun if we shared some of our works. Or maybe it'll just be me. I hope not.

If you post pictures, it might be helpful to use ImageShack to be considerate of those with slower connections. If you click on the thumbnail it will take you to another site with a full-size version of the picture.

First off, I'm an LOTR nerd and collect figures with my brother and sister. In this picture we bought the three Wraiths, and Frodo and Sam are missing (I didn't have time to go looking for them), but I made the set myself. Yes, I'm a nerd like that. I enjoy making things out of clay and they are most often useless. Anyway I was still proud of the way it turned out and thought I'd show it off.

Alright, I'm done spamming the board with new topics for today. Please post pictures or descriptions of hobbies!

As you can tell by my character avatars, I'm deeply into the anime craze. I basically love them all, save for the Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Ohs. Faves include Inuyasha, Evangelion and Azumanga Daioh. Aside from that, I like hockey (both watch and play - usually defense), cars, and video gaming.

Awesome! I love hockey too. It's really the only sport I enjoy. Going to the Blackhawks v Redwings game this weekend. :)

I am on the board of directors for 3 different nonprofits, some of them at multiple levels. I don't have time for hobbies.

Hobbies, umm lets see. I read so much that I have taken to shopping for books in used bookstore cuz its cheaper (its like cocaine a hard habit to break) and then their is my other love, the theatre. Any chance I get I go to shows, community, professional, elementry schools (although I make fun of those) I'll take it. I just got back from a production of Mamma Mia. Good show, weak cast. I also perform in quite a bit both in singing and acting. I can't stand sports (only baseball) but I love to dance so I think its a good trade off. But yeah thats me a big drama geek.

My biggest hobby is being lazy I guess.

I also play on my College's soccer team, I was the coach of the women's soccer team and I try to meet some friends every sunday to play soccer so I'd say soccer is one of my hobbies. I also do a lot of cycling... whenever it's not too cold there's a good chance I'm out there somewhere.

I also read a lot and I go to the cinema pretty often. I'm not a real film buff but I usually know the latest movies.

And I write quite a bit. Lately my creativity has been focused on log writing for Aegis but I used to write some poetry. Unfortunately I'm not quite confident about my "talent" so I usually don't share it.

Well geez, just look at my avatar and you can see what kind of hobbies I'm into. :)

In case you can't tell, I've really gotten into comics over the last year. It's really been some great stuff. It's amazing what you can learn about the genre with reading and the internet. Sadly enough, that's all work related, but I've grown into quite the fan. I love working at a comic book store. B)

My other obvious hobby is FOOTBALL!! I love it. From High School to Pro, it's just sooo much fun to watch. And I'm talking about American Football, before someone makes a smart arse comment. :-P

Besides all that and school, that's all I really have time for... yesh... I need to get a life.

EDIT: My god... I hardly go to movies anymore! I love going to them movies! I need to really give something up... oy.

While Trek is a large part of my hobby base, I have a couple other hobbies. :)

Gaming. First Person Shooters, On-Line PC and consoles.

Reading. Mostly Trek, sometimes heading over into Dungeons and Dragons land.

Fan fiction. Mostly Trek. Lately, I have been playing an Old West meets Vampires meets Spaghetti Westerns first person shooter game by the name of Darkwatch. I had a couple of stories based on the game accepted to the developer web site:

http://www.highmoonstudios.com/insiders/fan_fiction.php (written under Kansas Jones)

Very excited about this, my first *official* sale (even though I didn't get paid lol).

Anything DeForest Kelley. Favorite actor, both pre-Trek and Trek. I have a small collection of tapes of his cowboy days, autographs, try and get the McCoy figures when I can.

Yep, that about covers the hobbies.

This may sound strange but pursuing R&D of an inertia free field coupled with an

alternate propulsion system..on various web sites ,then golf of course, star trek, and

flying of course,computers,reading scientific publications,flying publications,good

food ,friends, the advance of paramedicine, but my main hobby would be the first

reference..the actual discovery and implementation of that would change all forms

of transportation as we know it,now and in the future, and by the way kansas i am

very fond of McCoy as well as most of the original actors in star trek :)

I got too many hobbies. I'm actually *very* careful about starting anything new these days because I know that once I start, I NEVER stop, lol. Oy. Let's see... I started making wine a few years ago, out of anything I can grow: Grapes, berries, peaches, herbs, etc. I make about fifty gallons a year now. When I'm not working at night, I am out dancing somewhere. I do ballroom, latin, and argentine tango. It's addictive. I have a bunch of other little crap I do, but in case it all doesn't add up to enough, this year I decided to study to become a potter. Yep, mud. It's amazing what you can make out of mud. I've spent the last couple days web searching glow-in-the-dark ceramic glaze... I guess you can't completely take the space nerd out of the picture.

While Star Trek is my first and foremost obsession, I do have other things in my life as well. I like working with and on computers, even though they frustrate the hell out of me. I can program to an extent (Visual BASIC). Physics is another one of my interests, probably because of Star Trek, and also because of A Brief History of Time. I read a lot of science fiction. I like H.G. Wells, Arthur C. Clarke, and Issac Asimov mainly. I also read the Star Trek novels. Additionally ocean fishing, gardening, cooking, my fish tank, most of the FOX animated shows.

Some days I feel as though my hobby is my vehicle, as I spend more time in it than anywhere else. :) I have found myself with some unexpected free time in our new locale so I've take up substitute teaching (middle school is my favorite). In the evenings time is filled with getting kids to football practice, cheerleading practice, riding lessons, art lessons, soccer practice, gymnastics, and whatever else they need rides to.

While I spend these endless hours in my vehicle, I read. A lot. Currently I'm reading Diana Gabaldon's new novel, "A Breath of Snow and Ashes". I also have a huge stash of tawdry romance novels, from my dearest friend, that keep me entertained.

I like to think I can cook, although the Lt Colonel has given me a magent that says, "I kiss better than I cook" I don't know if that means I'm a bad cook or a good kisser. Guess it depends on the day. I can easily get sucked into watching hours of the Food Network and then come away thinking, "I can do that!" But I really can't.

I run. Running makes me happy and it's when I come up with my log ideas. For many years running was difficult, but dropping a bit of weight has made running easier and much more enjoyable. One of my girlfriends has challenged me to a half marathon next summer. I think we were drunk when she said, "I dare you!" and I said, "Sure, why not?" However; we both remember is so we couldn't have been too far gone. One more "free" t-shirt to add to the drawer.

Oh, and I take dance lessons. My ten year old son comes to lessons with me. He's very good, although it's tough to do underarm turns when your partner only comes up to your armpit. I think I need to go visit Sketti B)

Well..I Collect a few things. Mainly Starships. I tried to Collect as many Lights and Sound Starship Toys by Playmates. Now Art Asylum is making even better ones. I have over a dozen ships.

I also collect some Star Trek Trading Cards, but admittingly have fallen behind with my last "Box Set" Being Enterprise. But it's around a thousand cards now.

I buy lots of Reference books regarding Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. I find them enjoyable to read before hitting the hay.

I guess I can't ignore my messageboard hobbies. I post on few Boards mostly Battlestar Galactica Messageboard Communities since Star Trek does not have a show out right now.

Favorite Magazine: National Geographic. Trying to prove Americans know Geography! lol..

Oh my, so many hobbies! Sorry for my crazy condensed responses but everyone is posting too fast for me. I love finding out things I have in common with all you people on the forums. B) Let's see ...

Miranda: I enjoy taking in a good show now and again although it's sometimes hard to find people to go with me. I saw Mamma Mia a few years back and enjoyed it even though I didn't know any of the songs beforehand. Pretty good show!

Nick: Being lazy is a good hobby. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It's just not a good lifestyle :D And let's see some of that poetry! We can't make fun of you, we're just a bunch of faceless names on a message board.

John Anderson: You know, I stopped reading comics awhile ago and I tried to recently get back into it. It's really intimidating going into a comic bookstore now. I feel like they're all looking at me like I don't belong! But I had to get the Serenity comics at any rate. :)

Kansas: I've recently discovered the world of fan fiction myself! I haven't written any yet but I've gotten involved with a lot of the series and writers out there. Who knew there was this whole other world on the internet? I have your link bookmarked now too!

Eagle: What sort of scientific publications? Are we talking Scientific American or something that's probably way beyond my comprehension?

Captain Huff: Pottery ... that's something I've always wanted to try and have never gotten around to. I'm jealous. I suppose I really don't even know where to start with that sort of thing though.

T'Linna: Write, read, cook ... that sounds like me. :D Knitting though, that's something I've never considered. Did you just pick it up randomly one day or did someone you know teach you?

Cmdr Dacotah: I can definitely identify with you on the Food Network thing. I end up just sitting and watching instead of cooking though. I also recently discovered the joy of running. Unfortunately it's not always enjoyable in the city, but I try to make time anyway.

Vatric:

French Literature, Philosophy, Astronomy, Stargazing, Latin, Ancient and Medieval History
I'm with you on all these things except French Literature. Latin is by far the hardest language I've ever tried to learn though. I think I'll stick with Spanish and my native tongues.

Precip: I've definitely got a couple of message boards I frequent now. Mine are limited to focusing on Trek though, as I'm not into much other sci-fi. What Trek reference books do you like? I keep hoping they'll come out with more, but I don't think they really sell that well so it's probably not going to happen.

A little of both actually. Someone got me started and I taught the rest to myself. B)

Who said it was a bad lifestyle? I'm not saying I don't do anything. I just take my time doing things and it hardly ever happens that I'm stressed out or nervous, really. I think I have pretty good chances not dying of a heart attack or other stress related diseases.

I like getting up...well not too early. Then I do stuff and I take a break every now and then. The art of being lazy is taking a break before you're even tired. That's what I do and it works just fine without interfering with college or anything. So being lazy for me really doesn't mean vegetating in bed all day. B)

As for my poetry. Even faceless names can make bad comments about things.

I had to stop watching the Food Network. I'd end up staring at it for hours. When I was asked "Are you STILL watching that?" I would just point at whatever was being made and make unintelligible noises. It had to end.

For pottery, all you gotta do is take a class - They have everything you need there: Clay, wheels, instructors who get you to make something useful out of a clod of mud. Just know, it's addictive. If you take one class, you're going to take another, and another. The next thing you know you'll be tiling a spare room and ordering five hundred pounds of clay. Clay is cheap.

I know some GREAT dancers who are armpit height, lol. They just learn to let go for spins and turns and grab back on at the right time. This does not include that guy in Vegas. He was not a great dancer.

I had to give up my comic book obsession too. I couldn't afford it.

I also live in my car, which I have call, "Meals on Wheels." Thank God for latin pop and a CD burner. If only I could add a refrigerator and microwave. We're shopping for a new car now and are hoping to get the guys to throw in XM radio... It has a heated stearing wheel.
