Trek Novel Continuity

I recently picked up some of the DS9 relaunch books (which I like a lot so far, btw) and I've been thinking about this. It's nice to have continuity between novels in some respects. I think it allows for deeper plots, better characters, and just a sense of familiarity that can be highly enjoyable.

On the other hand there are many negatives. No matter how they are written, sometimes you might feel like you've missed out if you haven't read some of the others. Ones in a series are the worst because it's hard to read only part of it, and books can be expensive. Plus what if you don't like a character? It might be a little harder to escape them.

Anyone else have thoughts on this (semi-) recent trend?

Two main reasons I have never indulged in any of the Star Trek novels:

1. They are not canon. Which, I must admit, is just a convenient excuse not to have to read them.

2. They are the reason the Vulcan and Romulan languages are so ridiculously difficult to spell, pronounce, and comprehend.

What are you talking about...

All you have to do is put a tr' in front of tr'everything.

It's tr'easy.

Tr'You Tr' Both Tr'are Tr'right. (Vatric, lol, you opened yourself up for the Tr thing.)

Well, I read quite a bit of the Trek novels, and I usually enjoy novels that expand a storyline from novel to novel. I've also read them out of order, or not gone in order, and usually get by pretty well with understanding.

Case in point: the "A Time To" Next Gen series? Read two out of the eight novels, and pretty much picked them up fine.

I think the key is that most authors write a stand alone novel that can still be included within whatever series it is in, similar to "A Time To".

I haven't found myself attracted to Star Trek Novels since they are non-canon. As a result I haven't been exposed to "Arcing" or "Continuity" in their Novels.

Now that doesn't mean I haven't read any. I have read a few Peter David novels, Vendetta...and Stike Zone. The latter, although old was extremely funny.

Interetingly Star Wars has seemed to embrace it's novels. Each Novel..interlinked with reoccuring characters.

I've read the one William Shatner wrote, when Kirk comes back as a borg :) that was cool, I kinda imagined the whole thing while I was reading it, I would like to see it some day become a movie B) What can I say I'm a Kirk fan.

I insist upon continuity in the books as much as possible, and I also am a proponent of canonizing some of the major books.

I've only recently started to read the novels. At first I was sceptic for the same reasons Precip and Vatric aren't too much into the novels.

Actually the reason why I bought the first one was kinda curious. My dad had given me his only Star Trek novel and it was in german (therefore I don't know the english title). He thought I might like it. I didn't because the translation was lousy. So I went to get me another novel, this time in english to see whether they were just badly written or whether it was really just the translation. I was glad to find out it actually WAS the translation. So I bought kept getting new novels.

What really annoyed me was that whenever there was a continuity between two or more books I could always only find one of the books. I might be funny like this but once I started reading a story I want to know the end, too.
