Log Entries

Hello!

I thought that we could use a place to brainstorm about log ideas, premises, fundamentals, and general collaboration. :)

Well on the subject of logs, I've been having major problems writing them lately. Where do the rest of you get your ideas from? The only way I can work past my writer's block is to harass some other crewmember to do a joint log with me.

- write about something that adds to character development: particitpating/doing a hobby or recreational activity when the character was off duty

- write about the characters reaction or opinion of something that happened in the sim that your character was aware of: maybe you went to do something and the tools weren't where they were suppose to be and your character is a neat freak, so maybe have a short rant in the log. Or if there is a new crew member you met make an opinion of the character based on the first impression-> on the talon every new crewmember is viewed as a spy until proven otherwise. BUT KEEP it to opinion of your character and don't put words into others characters mouthes without permission.

- write about sending a letter home or to a friend off the ship/station talking about how the posting has been going

- write about recieving a letter from home/friend off the ship and discuss the news that was in the letter

- If you have been given an assignment that could warrent the need to send a report to your commanding officer/department head write up a log in a memo or report style addressed to the crewmember you are to give the report to and include the details of what you were to report about. only go into as much detail as you want

I also recommend what I call 'backstory' logs, where you explore interesting points in your character's past.

This also works well if you are simming a character whose species doesn't have much history, for you can really create an entire culture as you go.

What really helped me be creative lately is this stupid jet lag. I'm at my best when I just got up (round 1 am) cos I can't sleep anymore, squinting at the screen cos my contact lenses are somewhere in the bathroom.

For me the most interesting and also most challenging logs to write are those where I have to do a lot of research. I just fear that they are not always the most interesting logs to read. I try to make it a point keeping even scientific and medical things as close to reality as possible. As mentioned it might take a few hours of research but I've found that it is usually worth the time.

As for joint logs, Kes. Abuse me anytime you want. What we've written together so far was fun.

I have trouble getting into character to write my logs...I can't write it all at once, so I'm doing three or four things at once and I'm always afraid the log will suffer for it.

Also keep in mind that simple reflection on the week's sim is helpful, especially for anyone who was absent.

Yeah I do that sometimes, I just want to be a bit more creative. I've got to agree though; I appreciate being able to read duty logs even if I was at the sim. It's nice to see what has been going on in other departments because I often miss things when it's all going so fast.

Yeah, usually I do my character's take on what happened on sim what I was doing and all that. If I'm out of ideas, then I start doing character devlopment logs.

Those are all helpful ideas, thanks guys. I could definitely try the "writing a letter" to someone idea.

And Miranda, if I can get off that horrible Vulcan infested station we should definitely do a joint log. No really, I mean it! ::chases after Miranda::

Mostly I do thought logs where my character thinks about information that occurred on the past sim and attempts to make conclusions about the implicatiosn of what happens. I sometimes attempt to intermix some brief experience my character had, usually from the Academy, that helps with some character development.

Or, I steal some stuff that I like from other genres and incorporate myself in the events, sometimes with the Holodeck, sometimes having it really happen. This gives a chance for me to do stuff I wish I could, but usuing actual sim-time may not allow for it. There are lots of possabilities.

I recently did a number of logs for the Agincourt (Jamie) that I liked. More then often, logs pop into my head during sims. It's either "Oh, that's something that would be great to go into detail" or, "Oh, this could be a good backstory"

Unlike what I didn't in the Reaent, I'm allowing the plot itself to determine my logs. Before, I just realeased what I wanted how i wanted, but I try to flow more now. If a plot opertunity to give a little back history presents itself, I'll take it, but your probably not going to see an out of the blue log detailing Jamie's life.

But, like I said, my log often have no real sense of direction when I write them. I just put down things as they pop into my head. Now, joint logs are a bit different, I usually set a goal to reach by the end of the log, but until then, things just happen :)

Heh heh, Grom. =0]

I like to write my logs when I am sitting in my truck, waiting to be unloaded/loaded. When I actually hand write them, it actually gives my brain some time to think out thoroughly what I want to say. And it kills time.

::laughs::

Hey, it works. I've done logs about food for the Hood and some other ships. :)

I know what you mean kes...I feel like all my logs sound the same. But here are some of my tips

During the day while I'm in class, or doing something else mindless, I will think about my character, how he's reacting, what he might be doing off duty...the trick is remembering these thoughts and forming them into logs later when I am by my computer.

Also, I would be happy to do a joint log, I have never had that opportunity yet.

A lot of times I will link what is happening in the plot with my personal life (i.e. Sam was in this and such a dangerous situation and thought about Rosie's safety) but that one has pretty much been exhausted. Sometimes the action in a plot is so quick and close together, it doesn't make sense to write a log between each sim because they all sound the same. I also think its good after a big plot to write about getting back to your personal life. Anyway, thats about all I got...
