SERENITY Dissection

Okay, time to chew it over, eh?

I loved the series, really, REALLY!

The movie was good, was high energy, was an assualt on the senses, but...

DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU PLAN ON SEEING THE FILM BUT HAVEN'T YET.

SPOILERS!!!

Stuff I didn't like

Where was the "Western" parts? This thing was almost non-stop spaceships and technology! I love rockets as much as the next guy, but where was the part that made Firefly so unique?

Why were they so super-human? You had people dying on swords and Mal gets run through, pulls it back out and does some amazing activities that don't include dying (not to mention how often he got beaten up by the "operative" and it seemed such an even match - against a trained assassin, in body armor). Jayne gets shot repeatedly and hardly flinches. Simon gets shot pretty badly and pulls through fine. River goes into a room over-flowing with Reavers and not only kills them all, but comes out without a scratch on her - oh please.

And speaking of harm... There was no reason to do that to Wash!!

And Shepard Book!!! (who's part was waaaay too small)

I won't even go into why they changed the way Simon saved River, clearly it was "necessary" for the film, but it was ehhhh.

Why make such a big deal about the mule being a hover sled, I liked it with wheels, more... rustic.

Stuff I liked

Okay, I didn't like Simon's new strength and power getting River free, but I loved his cool stunner!

I liked Mr. Universe, he fit right into the sensibility.

I liked Kaylee's display of feelings for Simon, especially when she decides she's not going to die and really grips that gun, very funny.

I liked River's fighting in the bar, very cool.

I did love the ship effects!!

Overall

I would say that Joss Whedon saw this movie as his last chance to be in this world. He killed off two main characters, he completed the central plot device (River being weird) and he gave Mal and the crew enough noteriety that it will be quite hard for them to disappear into the corners of space again.

Yes, I liked it, but it wasn't spectacular and, judging from the non-crowds at the theaters near me, it's not going to rake in enough to spur another movie or series, and that's the part that is the saddest.

than a little disapponited......overall......the special effects were very good....but the story line did leave much to offer...i am a genuine lover/follower of FIRE FLY... especially after this inappropriate stab....and has been HYPED ..by the media to be as

good as the series......W A S ...N O T...while others may have enjoyed the movie......

myself.. included.....i was non the less dissapointed in the overview of it...too bad

Blinded by my craving for all things Firefly, I LOVED the whole movie.

All of it - special effects and hovercrafts alike.

I was ready to sit through it again and I will see it at least once more while it is still in the theatre. I couldn't get enough of it.

Of course I have my own opinion about how things should have been, but making a movie is vastly different from making a TV series, so I realize that there had to be enough excitement and interest for non-Firefly fans in order to draw them into that world. I think Joss managed to maintain a difficult balance between showing much of the Firefly that we know and love as well as adding the other elements that the normal movie going person would need to find it interesting.

I can't say what other viewers (i.e. non-fans) might think of the movie, but I enjoyed it a lot. After a year of waiting for this thing to happen, I'm pleased with the results (obviously, despite the deaths). I can't wait for it to come out on DVD!

Don't get me wrong, I will definitely see the movie at least once more in the theater! I did like it for being more plot and development in the Firefly Universe, with the folk we all love - I just wasn't as pleased as I could have been.

I took my roomate to see it (she's not a scifi person) and she like it. She said it was better than she expected and she enjoyed it more than she thought. A girl at my work said the same thing. As for me....loved it. Yes there were things that I didn't care for (yes A9 like killing wash wtf) but I think for the most part it was really good.
