'Serenity; NOW!

28 posts in this topic

For those of you that haven't seen my other posts plugging the new movie SERENITY, here's a recap for you:

Firefly - My favorite show of all time. It ran on FOX back in 2002 (or thereabouts) and was cancelled without even getting to a single season! I cursed at the TV when I found out! The show is the creation of Joss Whedon, who is also the father of "Buffy" and "Angel". He's also written for other movies including Toy Story.

Firefly is a futuristic story of a starship (named Serenity) and its crew, trying to eke out a living in a harsh 'verse. They aren't exactly the 'good guys' or the 'bad guys', but they are always heroes. The world is very gritty and has a distinct western feel. Many have coined it to be a cowboy-space adventure. The ships are a far cry from the perfect lines and high technology of the Star Trek universe. To give you an idea, Joss himself said that these people are the type that the Enterprise would fly right past.

The movie is coming out this Friday! (September 30th)

I've waited a year for this movie and just wanted to share it with you all. Those that have become hooked to Firefly, know how exciting this is. For those of you that have never watched the show, check it out! They've started showing it on the Sci-Fi channel.

Oh Yeah!!! Gonna be there with the whole family, you bet! I started renting the DVDs and ended up buying the set (only 4 discs, sigh). I think I've seen every episode three times and I want MORE!

Gimme SERENITY!

I discovered Firefly less than a month ago and I think I've seen all the episodes at least three times each! My DVD set is on the way, as is my Blue Sun shirt. And I'm going to see it at 11:59 on Thursday night. Can you tell I'm obsessed?

It's the only sci-fi I've gotten into besides Trek, and it's all thanks to people like you that talk it up on the boards. :P

Definitely going to see it on Friday (even though it is Aegis night). . . . :P Firefly was awesome because it really was a Western in space. Unlike a lot of other shows, it didn't rely on plot gimmicks or deus ex machina to solve a problem.

Oh, and the technobabble is kept to a minimum. (Not that I dislike technobabble . . . mmm, mmmm, good).

I've had a thing for the engineer chick for the longest time. Theres nothing like being introduced to a character by having her having sex on your engine :P

Alas, I need to work Friday night, and I have business on Saturday, so Sunday will be devoted to Serenity

Woo Hoo! Going, and I even have my dad interested. :P

Firefly is a diamond in the rough. It has the western sci fi slant going on, which immediately separates it from all the other science fiction shows saturating the market (not that that is a bad thing mind you), Firefly just sort of stands well on its own.

Zoe is my girl. My favorite of the characters, even though they are all off the hook (and the guys are cute!). Tough, no nonsense, and she gets to use the uber cool Steve McQueen sawed off type shotgun! Hooraaah! (For any of you that have no idea what the McQueen reference is all about, check out some episodes of the classic "Wanted: Dead or Alive", you western deprived people you.

Here's something funny....Serenity was cleverly added to a scene in the Battlestar Galactica Mini Series. Apparently the same FX house that does the upcoming movie does the updated TV series.

Now that is pretty cool. I love it when one series (or FX people) gives another series a little nod. :P

Yup thats her up there in the upper left. This scene was before the Cylons attacked. My guess is the FX shop did it as a inside joke, and it literally flew over the Galactica staff's heads!

Woohoo! I just saw it and my DVD came in the mail today, so today was definitely shiny.

Anyway, just wanted to say I loved it! Not going to give anything away, but it had all the drama, suspense, humor, action, and cheesiness that I expected. And it was awesome seeing it with other Firefly fans. Never been to a midnight showing of anything before; that was great fun!

Such things are common.

There was a line in Batman Forever where Bruce Wayne said to Dick Grayson "I thought you would have been halfway to Metropolis by now." Metropolis is from Superman.

Also, in the Senate scene from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, you can see one of the Senator platforms is occupied by some E.T.-like creatures. Lucas later confirmed that these were indeed members of E.T.'s race.

Another example: the Milennium Falcon in First Contact during the battle with the Borg.

Just saw it. It was awesome! I have some pretty harsh criticism about a few parts, but overall it was a great movie, by far one of the best cinema experiences I've had in a while.

Spoiler warnings (yes, people die)

The movie was paced very well, there was plenty of action in the beginning and end, although the middle dragged just a little. Each character also got their bit of the action, and of course, River gets a lot of action. B) I'm rather disappointed with the smaller parts that Inara and the Shepard get, especially the latter fellow, but at least he had some great lines. The characterisation was good too, all the actors slid back into their roles very naturally.

The "Mr. Universe" character seemed a bit of a gimmick to me, perhaps even a deus ex machina, which is uncharacteristic of the Firefly motif. He's a little too sudden and a little too pivotal to the plot for my tastes.

Wash's death was quite dramatic and meaningful. Apparently, he's the character with whom I identify the most, and I do love his dinosaurs. The people at the theatre (and it was pretty crowded) literally gasped when he died, because it came out of nowhere. I was so saddened that I had to go to the washroom. When I came back, they were getting ready for the dramatic fight scene where Simon and Kaylee would get to be romantic and then River could save the day.

As usually, it's the actors and the characters who drive this movie. I can't complain, the dialogue and the delivery is pure Firefly and great to see. My dad, who has not seen an episode of Firefly, said the movie was "great," and he is very critical of movies. I was surprised by the turnout, but one of the unique things about Firefly is that, even though it's science fiction, it doesn't focus on the science part of the fiction, it focuses on the humanity (similar in the way that the new BSG does), which helps it draw in a much larger audience.

Now I hope they just don't make a sequel. . . . . :P

::BIG, HUGE SIGH::

So, the deed is done.

I saw the first showing of Serenity after work today and now I am totally wiped. Emotionally, physically, everything. That movie exhausted me. I went through the entire emotional spectrum. It sucked everything I had and I left reeling in sensory overload.

IT WAS FRICKIN' AWESOME!

And yes, I do have opinions about things I would have changed or found odd, but I'll keep those to myself to preserve the spirit of the movie.

I've waited a year for this movie. It is probably the only movie I've ever gotten this excited about (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter included). Hell, I even made my own Serenity shirt that I wore to work today and the movies after. Yes, people made fun of me (good-naturedly), but I also found some closet Firefly fans at work! :P

Now that it's over, I am more than a little sad.

Not because the movie disappointed - It was better than I ever hoped! - but because the anticipation is gone! Serenity has come and gone and I don't have anything else to look forward to! (Movie-wise, of course.) Sure, there are some pretty good movies slated to come out this year, but the Firefly movie IS the pinnacle. I'd managed to save myself from spoilers and reviews alike, because I wanted to see for myself what sort of movie this would be. I was blown away with how good it was and did not want it to end. I will most definitely be going to see it before it leaves the theatres again.

I hope that you all find your Serenity viewing experience just as good.

And I DO hope they make a sequel! A GOOD sequel! They are out there! If anyone can do it, Joss can.
