A Dark Aftermath part 3

Subject: a Dark Aftermath part 3

Date: Thu, Jan 30, 1997 6:01 PM

From: Ens1flip

"Ok, people, we did our best" Flip said to the sugical team. It was a long struggle for the patient, and for him."Computer, note time of death at 1800 hours, cause of death, massive internal  bleeding due to laceration trauma to liver and right lower lobe of the lung." Flip turned to one of the corpsmen "Please place the remains in stasis please. I may do a post mortem if requested" Flip looked at the body, "sometimes they do you know."

The corpsman nooded as Flip headed out to the rest of sickbay, I seeemed that things were slowing down, as he learned from the console that the battle has died down. Most of the injuries were stabilized and were undergoing treatment. Flip stayed behind and helped a dazed Ensign who had a nasty cut on his forehead. Flip looked around sickbay, sensing a general feeling of victory amoung these proud wounded.

Was it all worth it? All the destruction the pain inflicted the death? He checked the casualty log, 3 deaths , 36 injured. Somehow Flip's Starfleet training slipped, for that moment he felt sad for those who died, anger at the Jem Haddar and their blasted Founders, and at the Federa-.

No, he thought. It is not the Federations fault. Nor is it the Jem Haddar. It just probably boils down to that primal instinct that all species have of self preservation, that inner drive that makes us struggle everyday to survive, and survive in the way we know how. All have that drive, Even a species like the Jem Haddar, who though programed to even give their lives for the founders, hold that. Their way is to serve their "gods" who give them "white" that addictive substance they need to survive.

It does seem injust, but it is their way.

Thats why we fought, because of that differnce of ways. There is always conflict.  Thats why we are here to preserve and defend our way of life from those who impose theirs. I just hope, Flip thought, that those who died agree it is worth it.

We are Starfleet, Flip thought as his reief took over sick bay. He was about to walk out the door as he looked back at the injured crewmembers inside. Of course they agree.
