Signature Length

45 posts in this topic

I'm posting this after reading in another post that was rapidly headed off it's topic. This board Allows you up to 2500 characters for a sig. How much is to much? Currently I am using 1073 Characters in my sig. and if I add anything else I will remove something that I already have. What do you think? :)

Yeah, dude.. your sig is really long.. takes up most of my screen. Mine is long enough as it is, and I just took out the marquee I had in it. Really, I think 2500 chars is too long.. but I think this is a question better suited to A-9 or Sovak, the Board Admins.

In general, I think signatures should:

(1) have readable text. That basically means that you should take the dark gray background color of the boards into account when choosing a text foreground color. The font size should be large enough to read on a 17" 1024x768 screen (which is about normal for today's technology). This goes for post text as well.

(2) Not take up an unreasonable amount of screen real-estate.

(3) Not have flashy or moving things that distract attention away from the actual text of the posts.

(4) Not have banner ads in them.

The reasoning behind 2-4 is that people click on topics to read the topics, not your signature. That doesn't mean a signature can't be interesting enough to read, it just means that it shouldn't grab attention away from everything else.

People have problems with long signatures?

I think I'll lengthen mine a bit just to give them something to discuss. :)

I don't even see the point of a long signature, as you can observe. :)

It allows a flare of individuality when people look at your posts.

However, one would think our own people here would be more mindful of others, and not use such large or distracting sigs or picture blocks. Some of our members are on dial-up, and end up having half their time taken up by downloading long repetitive sigs.

Please be courteous, and keep them to a short text block, or a small picture. Seriously, the only thing I hate worse than long, moving, flashing sigs, are player pregnancies on ships.

I'm on dialup and have had no trouble with large sigs. I removed my own marquee just because I was tired of it, but no one's sig is too big for my connection. ::deliberately says nothing about player pregnancies::

Coming from the Graphics Boy:

As long as the images being loaded are relativly low file size, there *shouldn't* be a problem. However, I am all for keeping your siggy nice and simple. No reason to have a life story in them. :)

And I've moved this topic to "Questions and Comments" because I think it fits better here.

Sam, I just noticed that your red text is barely readable (or, maybe it's just me) :-/

Red IS a little hard to read, but it's not as bad as blue on this background.

I have typed in red before with no problem. Font size has everything to do with it however.

I've often wondered why the boards can't have a black background then all colors could be seen. Even the chat window background could be balck then we could use colors associated with our position. Have you ever tried to use yellow txt in the chat window? Impossible to read. :)

Well I think it's quite easy to decide what's reason and what's not :)

Some of us are also members of startrekfans.net which used to have a black background in the chat room. Problem was the UserIDs were in dark blue. Even though you could see what was being said it was almost impossible to tell who was saying it.

The chat screen at Startrekfans.net is still black. They changed the user id color.
