Vulcans

38 posts in this topic

One of the other topics turned into a "How do you play your Vulcan character?" thread so I figured it would be good to start a new thread here.

So Vulcans real and imaginary, sound off! How you play your character? How do you deal with the lack of emotions? How do you deal with Pon Farr? Mind melds?

Well, it depends on the situation. On board the Republic, I play T'Linna as close to the "unemotional" Vulcan as I can (eyebrow raise included!). At the Red Star or a celebration, it depends on whether she's there alone or with her husband. If she's "on a date" with her husband, I try to play her a little more openly (with him anyway). If she's there by herself, I play the cold emotionless version. (Complicated, huh?) I haven't had to deal with the Pon Farr yet, that's in 6 years.

Plus, T'Linna's pregnant, so she's not going to be the "normal" Vulcan.

While I don't play a Vulcan anymore.. I tried playing my old Vulcan character on the Excalibur (Oct '03 - May '04), as normally as I could. I tried modelling him after various Vulcan characters such as Tuvok and Spock, while maintaining a personally of his own (if you can call it that). But to be original, I tried to give him compassion, such as giving gifts to his friends and crewmates on special occaisons. It was fun though.. and as for Ponn'Farr, I conveniently made him go through it right before he first joined Excal, so he wouldn't have to worry about it for another seven years. Heh.. ;)

I've always said that GromVik as my first character was a big mistake, but alas I've played him long enough that many of my mistakes were fixed. I went the "cheating" route as well, only on a different level. Grom's not completely Vulcan, just half and he was raised on Earth. GromVik is probably a little more reasonable than most human beings, but his emotions can often be amplified due to the constant battle between reason and passion.

hehe, I still miss George Grommy. God he rocked ;)

I've never had the inclination to play a Vulcan. The only other alien I've played was a Ferengi on the Aegis, otherwise all my other characters have been Human.

Hey there,

The best Vulcan I've ever seen played was by an individual who used to sim on the U.S.S. Republic many years ago...had the name Marek as I recall. He was able to play the emotionless character perfectly and to this day was the best I've ever seen.

There is a big problem, in my eyes, with many players wanting to be a "Vulcan" or a "Human/Vulcan" yet not understanding what this "requirement" means. Far too often, people play with a set of pointy ears but completely toss out the window the idea they are not supposed to show emotion. This can turn into later issues with the person suddenly wanting to make the character some other species, or heck I've even seen someone wanting to make it Romulan. Just doesn't work.

I said this in the other post, I've been impressed by T'vin, i'm not sure how often she posts in the forum. all of her :: :: remarks are filled with passionate emotion, because as stone faced as vulcans are, they still have those deep emotions inside, and i think its very cool that she remains solemn on the outside, but shows us as players what the experience is for her character. Just an observation, I don't know how i would do as a vulcan, i'm much to upbeat to pull it off.

::transmits two hundreths of a credit to the "bucket" account::

Hey, I remember that!

I never got a gift though. Thanks Seiben.

I believe I'm too sarcastic in real life to ever pull off the Vulcan thing. It just isn't me (though I have tried before). Besides that, I always figured I would be bored playing a Vulcan, bacause I usually don't have much to say - I just think about stuff, and try to make some dumb jokes. Vulcan ways and me really wouldn't get along; I'm too emotional. :D

For the most part, I've always played Human characters. My first character, Hewitt Demore, was 1/2 Human, 1/2 Betazoid. But he didn't have any telepathic abilities, so it was just like using a human character. Farron is Bajoran, but also doesn't act like it - I cheated on her, and put her on Earth (or Starfleet bases) for half her life. I know how humans act, so that part is easier. ;)

Who can forget Sybok?

Believe me, we have tried. Vulcans and non-Vulcans alike. The worst Star Trek movie ever save for The Motion Picture.

I play my Vulcan as a Vulcan should be played - minus the while emotionless thing, the being from Vulcan thing, and the penchant for logic thing. Add to that a somewhat evil nature, a bad attitude, and passionate emotions and you have my character.

In short, I play her as a Romulan. ::Smirks.::

Which is exactly as it should be.

Actually I think they were both Romulans. That one at the bottom I think was the one who turned to stone on the Senate floor.

I have two Vulcan characters.

The first, T'Parek, being on a human starship in the ENT-era, is naturally very curious about humans, but she doesn't allow herself to be influenced by their emotional behaviour. And as Vank knows, she just doesn't 'get' this dating thing. And I have some fun twists for her in the future, so I hope that Sunday's at 9:00 PM will be Challenger time for many years to come.

The second, Sarvek, is such a new character, that I haven't been able to do much with her. I'm planning on making her a kohlinahr trainee, but with a wicked sense of how humans party. Anyone on Hood last night knows what I mean.
