Kinda hard to choose since all the series had great captains. I guess I'll go with Picard but Sisko, Kirk, Archer and Janeway are a close second

Actually, if we could flesh out his role as such, I think Sulu would be the best Captain.

Think about it. During Kirk's time as Captain / Admiral / Captain Starfleet officers were essentially cowboys in space. By Picard's time, however, Starfleet had matured. We had seen enough of the galaxy to codify the best way to handle, say, First Contact procedures and how to interpret the Prime Directive and when a Captain should or shouldn't go on away missions, etc. and were no longer flying by the seat of our pants and making up stuff as we went along.

This maturity would not have been an overnight process. There would have to be a blended "growing up" process. That could be Sulu's role. As we have seen in The Undiscovered Country and that one Voyager episode he was still very much a cowboy in space, but we know from the books that he also survived long enough to still be in command of Excelsior during the Dominion War. He is the natural bridge between old and new.

I don't think Takei could pull it off now though. Maybe 10 years ago or so but he is getting too old now for a new movie or series in that character. It wouldn't be believable.

Awww Travis man, lighten up, just cos you and me have been around ths board waaaay longer than any sane person would, we must not get grumpy at the newbies and their polls that we KNOW will be held.

Sisko!

He was just Picard but with a pair of stone.

As for the age old (okay, 18 year old question) of Kirk or Picard, the answer is quite simple...

Kirk rules.

In "Generations," when Picard faced Soran at the bridge, the packed audience in the theater I saw it in was quiet and attentive. The attitude was, "What's going to happen now?" When they replayed the sequence a half hour later and Soran was suddenly face to face with Kirk, the audience exploded into cheers. Why? Because they knew Soran was about to get his ass kicked.

Kirk, in his first outing ever, slugged it out with his former best friend who had god-like powers and killed him.

Picard, in his first outing ever, surrendered.

No contest.

PAD

And, we shouldn't forget that he is required reading in the academy, so most of the post TOS captains that we've seen learned/were inspired by him.

So, Kirk's my #1. As for my #2, I'd go with Calhoun, since he was a space cowboy in a time when starfleet became "proper". (which is probably why his mission was in the "New Frontier")

(and of course, #3-15 are the captains here  )

But, these are all "starship/base" captains. There were captains before them that could be much better (i.e. space shuttle captains, captains from the world wars, captains from revolutions, captains from civil wars, captains of steam boats, captains of planes (I'm thinking Dr. Strangelove here), the captain of the Titanic (I keed, I keed), and plenty more) And, there are also captains from other species (Shran was cool, and there are plenty of other species that could have great captains that weren't showcased enough/properly) that should be considered.

So really, there is no "Best. Captain. Ever." (unless Comic Book Guy says so), but only "who's your favorite captain?"

Okay, pointless rant over.

Dumbass, if you're interested in a story about Captain Sulu, I recomend that you check out "The Captain's Daughter," starring Sulu and guest appearance(/villan?) by Harriman! (jeeze, this is my third post in the past three days promoting Peter David's books!)

Janeway. I might be partial since Voyager was my first Trek, but i have some reasoning. Janeway had to face something unlike any other captain. She was isolated from the Fleet and from SF command, and had to get home. She was also faced with somewhat of a motley crew. A mix of starfleet officers and maquis rebels, and at the helm, an ex-con (dispite his talent as a pilot). Along with keeping moral and progress up enough, she kept voyagers environment strongly starfleet. She commited to this at the very begining and didn't fail in the least, the ideals of Starfleet/Federation that us trekkies admire were held in highest regard for 7 years of isolation. I admit she was a bit shakey at first (and that bun  ) but she really grew and became a supurb leader. Another amazing thing was that at the end of it, 20 some years after being stranded, she wasn't content with what was done...so she went *back* to do it better, and crippled the borg in the process. I like her steely, collected "i'm in charge" persona. Great actress, great character, poster child for starfleet leadership.

Thanks,

Sam

Duplicates/unnecessary repetitions have been removed.

There is no need to keep tossing the same names out, over and over. Thank you.

Mackenzie Calhoun is my number one favorite! If and when Elizabeth Shelby drops dead, he's mine! ;) Jean-Luc Picard will have to be my close second, though.
