Admiral Carl Sanifrest sat looking over the communiqué in his hand. The middle-aged man next to him watched intently.

 

“So Admiral,” the middle-aged man in civilian clothing said. “What do you plant to do about that?”

 

Carl looked up for a moment. “Well they could certainly be an asset to us in the Gamma Quadrant. And it’s far enough out that the Dominion shouldn’t get to crabby about it.”

 

The middle-aged man smirked at the word ‘crabby.’

 

“Well then Admiral,” he said adjusting himself in his seat. “I can be on the next transport to the Gamma Quadrant.”

 

“That won’t be necessary, Jon.”

 

“Oh?”

 

“I am going to send Wayne Day and his new boat out there. Give them a chance to get a feel for that new ship of his.”

 

Jon lifted an eyebrow. “You don’t think a full ambassador would be better equipped?”

 

“Not initially, no.”

 

“But…”

 

“We don’t know hardly anything about these people and I want a seasoned Fleet officer to check them out before we go getting all buddy-buddy with some on the Dominion’s backdoor.”

 

“I see…”

 

“Besides,” he continued. “If they do need a real ambassador, The FC just dispatched some pointy-ear green blood to handle the situation at Camelot with the Romulans and the Dominion. I am sure she’d be more than capable of taking care of any mess they get themselves into.”

 

“As you wish, Admiral.”

Admiral,

 

You are hereby requested and ordered to make course from Camelot Station to the seventh planet in the Surmac system where you will be conducting an official survey of the planet, which has requested official diplomatic relations with the Federation. It’s a long trip to Surmac so I suggest you get underway as soon as possible.

 

I have included all known information about the Surma.

They get their food energy primarily from the consumption of meat, though they are capable of photosynthesis for survival.
