Somehow speaking with Xar Apalla face-to-face did not seem to help humanity’s cause. Davies wondered whether he was actually naïve enough to have believed such a notion after their initial exchange. The fact is he was losing an ideological battle on the most biased of playing fields.

 

“This is not what they taught me in Starfleet Academy,” Davies inwardly moaned.

 

These days Davies felt more like a Federation Ambassador than a Starfleet Captain. In the last few months he had been responsible for maintaining cordial relations with the Romulans and ensuring that the mission to Vechwa was solved so that the Federation could use it as good PR. Now, here he stood on a first contact mission defending humanity, despite some of its admittedly barbaric blemishes.

 

This was more than “Diplomacy 101,” this was something that only could be experienced. Davies hoped that whatever the outcome of the mission, that soon it would come to a completion. That hope was just about realized when he received a com from Lieutenant Prell saying that they had been able to fix the problems with the life support system.

 

“That’s my Chief,” Davies said to himself as he allowed himself to smile.
