Depends on your post, if your CSEC, you could look over some reports until the action starts. If your ENG you could run a dianogstic, ect.

That's something I've had trouble with myself, Ramdar. The problem is there isn't a list of things you're specifically allowed to do. When you want to do something, ask yourself who else you would be affecting. Does it affect another department? Will it hinder or affect the main plot in any way? If you think it might affect the plot, then it's probably not a good idea. If you're really unsure, I'd say your best bet is to message the GMs and ask, is it alright if I do this?

Here are some general guidelines:

(1) If it affects the main plot in a big way (like, bringing in new ships, aliens, or astral phenomena).

(2) If it changes the focus of the plot (like, breaking things, especially when there's no real reason for them to be broken). In a battle, if the port nacelle is hit, it makes sense for the warp drive to go down. In orbit of a normal planet, it makes no sense for it to go down.

(3) If it requires ascribing an action to an NPC who you aren't playing (like, saying that the aliens are powering up their weapons). This is actually true for any player, but the issue comes up for NPC's. It's *always* a bad idea to say:

:: fires phaser and kills CSCI ::

Better:

:: points phaser at CSCI and shoots ::

(4) SGVs: SGV's are usually used to make the plot go somewhere. If you're playing one, you've probably been given something of an outline of what to do. It's always good to ask if you want to change the plan.

There are also some things you should ask about in-character. It's always a bad idea to use weapons without a direct order from your CO, XO or AT leader. But, it's sometimes a good idea to suggest red alert, raising shields and/or arming weapons. It's usually a bad idea to leave your post for any reason during an academy without an order.

A lot of this is based on a judgement call that you have to make. If there's a time when you're not sure whether something's appropriate to do, try PM-ing the command team. The academy CO is usually in charge of the plot. If you have trouble getting through by PM (which will sometimes happen on a busy night, after all, we're only human), type:

<< [GM Name here], PM >>

to the chat screen ONCE.

Conversations do not usually require actions.

This all true, by the way, of advanced sims too.

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Remember it is always best if your unsure to PM the GM. ;)

If all else fails, ask the GM. Mostly action statments by a player are for your character only. I/E <CSEC>::pulls out phaser and set's to stun, aims and fires:: Or, <CSEC>::steps onto the transporter pad and shimmers:: Like LoAmi, NDak and other's have said, if it effects the main plot, or the ship as a whole ask the GM.

Zaphod,

"I purr, therefore I am."

And, don't jump the gun. I did this during the 10pm Monday acad.

The landing party was making first contact with bugs. The ship was hailing them, no response. So I think "need to get them back" and I order the Ops and Eng to beam 'em back. The sim paused, and I was told by the GM's, and I realized, the whole point of away teams is to explore, so why snatch 'em back, when I wasn't even sure what was going on?

Just go with the flow, follow action statements, banter with your department, amuse yourself department wise, and don't jump to conclusions. :P

Comm them again and say something like "Please respond"...or you could PM them and ask them to answer you.

You can assume then, that their not answering. Perhaps they're communicators are down and the GMs haven't actioned it, or they simply don't wish to reply. Best to just inform the Command Staff that they're simply not replying and go off of there.

Hey there,

But also keep in mind that GMs like to see initiative from folks in the Academy. Don't be someone who turns into the "There has been an ACTION statement in five minutes. I don't know what to do!" and type 5 lines during the sim.

Like I mentioned earlier, you can comm them again or send a message to them. If they don't reply to your PM, type <<[GM], PM>> to the screen. :P

Remember that while yes we try and keep up with all our PM's...we usually have a lot going on during a sim and the PM windows don't flash to tell us that someone has sent us a message (if the PM is already open). And 9 times out of 10 if it's 'crucial to the sim' we'll actually ACTION it :P

Also remember, usually it's the away team that would be contacting you on the ship. The Away Team had only been down for less than 5 minutes. How often in the show, did you see the Ops officer just decide to com Picard and ask if he was having a pleasant field trip? For this sim, the Captain was excited about what she was seeing, there had been no danger seen at her location, and thus, she was distracted enough not to answer the com, also wracking it up to the fact she had a boat load of cadets. There is not constant communicaton, and unless you were doing some sort of direct scan, of the area, or someone called, you on the ship would not have known what was going on down below.

Remember....dont' call us, we'll call you! lol
