the all knowing (almost) Goftar

38 posts in this topic

Are you a helmsman who doesnt know what warp drive is

Are you an engineer who doesn't know how to shut down the warp core

Are you a doctor who doesnt know how to use a dermal regenerator

your problems are solved

just ask Goftar get one answer not a whole bunch that is garunteed to be fully researched before you get an answer

(Note: This is not a trivia board do not ask questions such as what does Q say when he first meets Captain Janeway though I do know the answere thats not what this is for. Goftar does not claim to be completely all knowing also answers may take from one hour to one day to come in>

P.S. I know it could be redundant to have this on the questions and answers page but I thought it might be easier

That's easy:

(1) Warp drive makes us go.

(2) :: taps panels ::

(3) :: uses dermal regenerator ::

Hey there,

I'd be very careful about doing that. Within an advanced sim, if you say a plasma conduit needs to be replaced or that the intermix levels on the matter/antimatter reaction chamber are unstable, you might see an action that causes the ship to suddenly "drop out of warp" because you started your repair.

I don't make stuff up in my advanced sim, Fred. Only in the academy...and only when I'm working medical.

I think I fit in somewhere between the extremes of using "canon" technobabble exclusively and making up your own. There are some fairy established technobabble phrases, that, even if we don't know what they really mean, we sort of understand what they do. Things like:

Phase coil overloading in your hand = bad

Uncontrolled matter+antimatter mixing = really bad

Reverse polarity on [name instrument here] = fixes all problems (j/k)

... and so on.

But, there's a lot of stuff that isn't so well established, or really isn't necessary to know. Like, what's in Jeffries tube J-17 on deck 12 of a Prometheus class, or whether the EPS conduit at deck 6, junction 8 really connects to any important systems. I think it's OK to make up technobabble as long as (1) there's some reason to do it to advance the plot (2) You "understand" what you're saying and (3) You can communicate the implications of your technobabble up the chain of command coherently. (4) You can communicate the meaning of the technobabble down the COC and sideways, so everyone else can add to it.

Hey, Ramdar. Can you explain exactly how a dermal regenerator works? I know what it does, just not how or why it does that.

okay well equiped within a dermal regenerator are several micro devices a micro scanner, and a micro replicator. The device scans the skin surrounding the area than from those results replicates new skin on the effected area while also overlaping so no scaring shows the new skin then begins working effectivly with the persons body to repair whats underneath
