Hey there,

There is actually an outstanding book I read several months ago detailing the behind the scenes work that happened. It was from an old friend of Gene Roddenberry's and I just can't remember the title. In any event, it explains how the entire process went...from first trials in 1964 to the eventual series and how things really fell apart in the final year. It also then explains the processes that happened in the time between TOS and TNG. Quite an interesting read.
