Engineering Academy Question

This is for the GM's as well as all of the STSF game leaders: due to the recent passing of Mr. James Doohan, would it be doable to have an upcoming academy or several academies that focus on engineering teams or engineering type of adventures?

Examples: the USS Scott, the USS Doohan patrolling the James sector. Another good example - the SCE (Starfleet Corp of Engineer) fiction books. Scotty is now the head of the Corp in these books, with the USS DaVinci as his main ship, doing all sorts of missions, from Engineering to salvage ops to investigations into phenomena.

I don't want to offend anyone or cause any copyright issues with startrek.com. I was just thinking that he was an actor who entertained us all for years with his role playing, maybe STSF as a whole could do some tribute role playing for him? I was just thinking it might be a nice little tribute to do some academies with a Doohan flavor?

Not a GM, but I like this idea...it sounds like fun and it's a fitting way to send Mr. Doohan off, don't you think? ::waits for GM opinions::

I actually got to play in an Academy where everyone was an AENG (except for one who got to be a CENG ^_^ ) and we had to fix irate mining equipment.

Tachyon, didnt' you die in that one?

Yep, we do this occassionally anyway. I've run a few departmental sims, where everyone is in the same department. If you all like that kind of thing, I suppose we can work in a few more.

What about a new set of academy's known as Departmental Training Institutes.

You could rotate the department that is featured for the week, and ask for advanced simmers from that department to assist the GM's in training the academy students. It wouldn't be required for graduation, but it might be used sort of as "extra-credit" for academy simulations, and maybe even some of the GM's could offer points/credits toward promotions, if you went and represented your sim.

Just a thought...But I'd be glad to help if it happened.

What it seems like you are talking about is a kind of "How-To" training for specific departments. So those people who end up in engineering know how to be engineers, medics know how to work in sickbay, and so forth. The sim in itself is almost a sampler so to speak, so you can see what it might be like working as a team in the field you are considering for an advanced sim.

Although I agree that sometimes people need a little more knoweldge about the deaprtment they are entering, this also seems like a teamwork building idea. When you're on a ship and you have to teamwork, it's much more difficult to know how different departments need to interact together, especially in such a short sim. But when you talk about a departmental sim, you are dealing with a group of people who all are working in the same field on the same ideas.

::sees an empty soap box and climbs onto it::

Firstly, remember that my comments are my own and do not represent the other GM's in any way shape or form. ^_^

Now...onto my rant. I have no problem with doing a department sim once in a while (Laura and Grom did these many moons ago when I was but an Ensign and I loved them.) However, I wouldn't...as an Acad GM...want to be locked into only doing Departmental sims.

If it's something the players are interested in, then it's something the individual Academy GM Teams might consider.

However, I see a few problems. First: Department sims become...difficult when you have medium to large rosters. Second: If you say...want to be a Science officer, than you really have no reason to want to be in an ENG Academy. (In reference to setting up say a weekly ENG Dept sim. [or any other such dept.])

Also, I tend to think we shouldn't develop something that doesn't count towards graduation: There isn't really a point in going. Secondly, I know speaking from the voice of an Adv. Game GM, each GM team has their own standards for Promotion, and I for one...like to be able to set said standards. Also, in order for that to count as extra credit, that would be something we'd have to keep up with, and unfortunatly our time is limited as is.

So...in closing...I'll agree with Blu...If doing Department sims is something you guys are interested in...sure I don't care to work in a few more. And as for the Scotty tribute...*I* Dont have a Problem with that. I know Lebow and I tend to name our ships after Trek people when something happens (Like the USS Sulu if it's his birthday)

A set number of academies based on departments? (Mister Smith, Garnoopy)

Neat idea, but personally, I think I would go batty because I like to change it up (I know a few of the GM's have seen me and my "Requesting a Post - No Preference" floating around the academy) . So on that I have to go with the points made by NDak about not being locked into them.

But, I do really enjoy dept. based when they occasionally pop up, so I agree with BluRox / NDak on continually having the random department adventure here and there. Woo Hoo.

And with regard to using regular departmental sims as teamwork building (Garnoopy, Smith): The regular sims do that with all the departments/players interacting with one another anyway, and when you do graduate onto a regular sim, then you get further inter-department training. It all works itself out, no matter what type of academy or advance academy you find yourself on. Good system development employed by the GM's here.

I am also with Wesleymustdie as well as everyone else who went for the James Doohan tribute idea - hoping to see the USS Doohan exploring the Scotty sector with thier intrepid Engineering staff pop up in a few random dept. academies.

(Tried really hard to work all the names into this post where credit was due. Whew. And again, didn't want to start any issues regarding the way things are done around here. Just curious about the possibility of seeing one or two Mr. Doohan flavored sims. ^_^ )

I agree with you both, N'Dak and Kansas. A departmental sim is an interesting idea that I believe a few, if not many, would be interested in at least trying for those of us who have missed them when previously done.

Perhaps, the next time a departmental sim is planned, a notice could be posted. That would allow those who are interested in attending one to see what it's like.

Well, the Tuesday late night academy still runs department sims. The thing is, as N'Dak pointed out, the larger the turnout, the harder it is to do a department sim. So we tend to only run them on slower nights.

Hey there,

Personally, I am in favor of departmental sims. However, there is another issue.

You may want to be an engineer and let's say you went to only the Academy sims featuring engineering sims. You graduate, get ready to join that one advanced sim that works with your schedule and...there are no openings in engineering. What do you do?

Such situations are quite common and I know more than a few people who have been faced with the reality that they only simmed as an Assistant Medical Officer only to find that no sim they could join had such positions available.

Well, I think, Departmental SIM idea aside, it would be fun just to do one or two next week, in honor of Doohan. Or atleast have a SIM where everyone is scottish and types in that language, or something. OR all the engineers are scottish. You know, just one or two in his honor. =0]

I liked what we did tonight in the academy. Our ship was the USS Montgomery Scott...we could have used Mr. Scott's expertise though!
