War of the Worlds

26 posts in this topic

So, how many of you seen War of the Worlds yet? I've seen it twice, definitely awesome!

I loved it, 10/10 for me. I know many who loved it and some who hated it. What do you think of the movie?

I personally think the ending wasn't as great, but after the second time seeing it, I understood it more and liked it a bit better. Now Tom Cruise isn't one of my favourite actors but he played his character well.

Thoughts?

great movie....until the end...i mean..c'mon...what, did the aliens forget to charge their batteries? they all suddenly keel over? thousands of years of preparation, carefully planting the machines and monitoring humanity and they just "happen" to overlook something that will instantly kill them? a bit of a stretch if you ask me...otherwise a good movie

i'm sure the ending would have differed and been much more fulfilling in the minds of this present generation (ah, how we do love closure in endings) were the movie itself not based upon the book of like name written by h. g. wells near the turn of last century.

I went and saw it, and I must say it didn't live up to the hype. While, it was a very good movie, it wasn't the mind blowing experience I was expecting. I could have easily have gone and seen Independance Day and had an equally good time.

Good movie, but not worth the hype.

Hey there,

Well, I think given box office numbers thus far, not a good chance of it being a flop all together.

As for people's questioning of it, I think it's a real possibility (within the context of the movie of course). The exact same thing happened, in many ways, during the exploration of the planet Earth. Folks came into new areas, brought illness with them the locals had never seen before. No internal immunity built up, thus they died. In some places, killed off entire tribes. So the concept isn't that far off.

I dont watch movies for realistic concepts though...I watch "action" movies for action...I wanted to see Tom Cruise blow the buggers sky-high.....i woulda even waited for a sequel.....

my point is . . . this is based on a thinking book, not an action book. the war of the worlds as written by h. g. wells is teeming with descriptive and thoughtful diatrides. the main character's pensive state regarding the invasion of the martians easily surpasses the "action" found in the book.

that's what i meant by my comment about this generation finding it less fulfilling. personally, i'd rather watch a movie with character development than one with stuff blowing up. this was a good mixture of both, in my opinion, and i'm happy to see that while spielberg may not have followed the book explicitly (i.e. making the setting in america, different centuries, etc), he at least did keep the atmosphere of the book, in that the movie was much more pensive and thoughtful than action-based.

i was pleasantly surprised. finally, an action movie that has a little thought behind it. my intellect craves more. :P

Anyone want to theorize on how the japanese in Osaka managed to take a couple tripods down?

they offered them their food?

the Power Rangers helped them?

the tripods woke up Godzilla and got their waste knocked out of them?

one of the camera men walked over and pushed down the actor playing the tripod?

Macguiver was visiting Japan and took them out using a rubber band, duct tape, and a hammer?

Pokemon?

the Big Hero Six were there?

the guys who run Iron Chef decided that the mystery ingredient would be tripod?

there weren't any scientologists or annoying little girls that can't play anything other than annoyingwhom I want to punch in the face living in Japan for them to kill, so they just sat around and had a smoke?

the tripods caught a cold?

Anyone want to theorize on how the japanese in Osaka managed to take a couple tripods down?

- The Power Rangers

- Pokemon

- The DragonBall Z guys

- The weird kids from "The Grudge"

- Godzilla

- The Nintendo guys created a real life Super Mario

- Shoddy Japanese batteries caused the tripods shields to burn out faster

- SARS

- Someone brought in McBain

- Team America ((that movie is Hilarious))

- Inspector Gadget

- The Japanese President/Prime Minister etc..called them and told them he knew what they did last summer and they died of embarrassment

- Red Green was in Japan...and as well all know, ANYTHING can be fixed with ducttape

- Sailor Moon

This may sound stupid, but what does this have to do with War of the Worlds?

The above 3 posts are jokingly theorizing how some of the tripods were destroyed in Osaka. I never meant that to be a joke though :P

::makes note to reread book and go see movie:: Okay, thanks, Cougar.

well, they're not one and the same. the book is set in england, in the twentieth century. the movie is set in the usa, in the twenty-first century. while the concept is still the same, the screenplay differs greatly, as you can imagine.

SPOILERS to preceed. Go with your own caution.

Alright, I saw the movie and I enjoyed it. It was just a fun and suspenseful movie. It did have some flaws and some minor problems that you could just pick apart (Like, how did the family in the end in Boston appear unscathed and perfectly fine in thier little brick house, when the aliens took out almost all of Jersey as it appeared. I'll make sure to make a note of this if and when an alien invasion ever occurs, cause I now know where to go...).

Tom Cruise did his thing, even though I think he's a nutter at the moment, and Dakota Fanning came across a little annoying, and the teenage kid with the angst did what all teenage kids with angst do... come off as whiny. Another thing that bothered me was how the kid survived... I won't go any futher, but I wanna know how and when he got his NAVY Seal traning, cause that was the only way he could have survived what had happened in that field.

I will say that the ending felt a little rushed, and that an extra ten minutes or so probably would not have hurt, but that's just me.

Concerning the whole Tripod thing in Osaka, I remember watching the movie and just thinking at that moment Kamikaze... That's my theory as to how the Japanese took it down.

Anyways, like I said before, War of the Worlds was a pretty good film. Even though you could pick the problems in the film apart till the end of time.

It get's 3 and 1/2 stars out of 5 from me.

one of my main problems (with the script) was that the book was a commentary on government using aliens as metaphores, while this movie focused on how much stuff could be blown up (not the point of the true story) without any political commentary (which was one of the points of the original story). (although I will admit I was pleased that they included the terraforming part)

SPOILERS!!!

It was exactly how it was in the original movie and the novel. When the aliens invaded Earth, we were helpless to stop them. Our greatest technology was useless, and I think the remake really conveyed that message just as the classic did. It showed a realistic interpretation of an alien invasion (Wil Smith doesn't steal an alien ship and plant a nuke on the mothership in this one!)...and the only reason humans were saved is because of the natural order of our ecosystem.

The ending was short because there really was nothing much to tell...all the aliens start dying of disease (though I thought the shields going down and them firing rockets at them was unecessary, I'd prefer they just collapsed with no intervention). I think it was handled nicely enough, and the alien crawling out of the ship was priceless for a fan of the original (although I would have preferred they not show the alien's face). The story was really about the humans in all of this, and keeping the camera on Tom Cruise the entire time gave a 'real' feeling to the events, IMO.

You would think the aliens though, with all their intelligence, would know a thing or two about diseases...instead of dropping out of their spaceships and lapping up dirty water out of some housepipes, hehe...they should have stopped by a grocery store and picked up some Ozarka.

All in all, I was very satisfied with the remake.

;)
