Bus rides

36 posts in this topic

Talk about bus rides, since when I was riding the bus for about 2 hours there's some pretty creepy people out there. Like this one lady (if she was a lady) had a beard... And I was wearing glasses so I wasnt seeing things. Anywho, any funny stories to share? :P

All I can say is: the back seat of an intercity bus is evil. Anyone who has ever been unfortunate enough to have sat in one for enough time knows what I mean.

I like the back seats of buses. But not standing, specially when it's packed, and hot outside, and in the bus.

Has anybody ever noticed that especially in summer those people who sweat the most tend to sit REALLY close to you? I like to take the bus maybe because I'm used to it. You don't get a better chance to observe all kinds of people.

And that is a good thing?

I'm just glad most of our buses have A/C. (Except for the older "fish bowl" buses, pushing 20 years old and a million miles). Anyways.. I've been on buses with many strange people. Clowns, punks, soldiers.. Though I rememberonce this one guy brought a chicken on the bus. It was in a box and kept flapping around making all sorts of noise. Turns out the chicken was to be his dinner for that night, and wanted no part of that. lol..

You're thinking of a city bus (and, yeah, those engines do get hot, but that's not my point). Think of an intercity bus, like Greyhound.

Why? It's so close to the bathroom? I haven't been on a Greyhound in ages..

Oh, Greyhound buses suck. ;P

I'd much rather be in a plane or train.

Best bus story I have?

I was upstairs on the double decker, coming back from lectures. I was at the front and the only other two people up there were an old lady to my left and a dodgy looking fella right at the back. At one point the guy rolls up and lights a great big spliff. The old lady keeps turning round and looking at him. The youth asks "sorry is this bothering you? I'll put it out." to which she answers "No its no problem, I only wish it were legal so my doctor could prescribe it to me!"

Then i had to get off at my stop! I was so annoyed i didn't get to see how it turned out!

Thats my bus story.

Well, I can't fly because of my disability. (Ceribral SMS, if I flew the cabin pressure could kill me) So, I have to travel by bus or train. Of course the train is too expensive, so I mostly travel by bus. In April, I took the longest bus ride of my life. I traveled from New Orleans Louisiana to Lewiston Idaho to visit Angie5, my shipmate on Qob and Challenger and r/t girlfriend. The trip took 64 hours. I had many new experiences like riding through a blizzard into Denver. I saw some unusual people. They had a man riding across the isle from me who wore a black robe, cloak and hood, who muttered to himself for 7 hours straight about satan. About the back of the bus. I like riding in the last seat. It's close to the restroom, and if there's noone else sitting there, you can curl up and take up all three seats to sleep.

Zaphod,

"Meow, I say meow boy."

I hate to harp on this point, but...

It's close to the restroom,

... this doesn't really bother you?

Well considering I'm in a wheelchair and can only walk a short distance with the aid of a cane, being close to a bathroom is a really important to me. I couldn't walk the length of a bus while it's moving, so I sit in the back and they put my wheelchair under the bus. As for the smell, yes it does get pretty rank.

Zaphod,

"You will be assimilated, meow."

heh...

I live in a college town. We have a bus service that it isn't to bad for short trips...it's kind of like a trolley.

Then their is the uber-evil PRT system. Way back in the 1970's...

The US Gov't funded my school with a grant to develop a new "Personal Rapid Transist" system that could be a model for US Cities to come and study andbuild their own. So...they built this system called the PRT that connects most of the city and the three main campus' that comprise my University.

The system is wholly electric...and...if you step on the tracks it kills you...

Thankfully I've only had to ride it a few times....but the last time I did...we got stuck on the stupid thing on a overpass in 95 degree weather at "max Capacity"...::Grumbles::

Wow, NDak. That's pretty awful. I try to avoid public transportation for reasons like that.

That's what we have here where I live too... only not like a trolley, more like a small-car eating monster... a scary one...

When I'm not in the bus, I close my eyes so I don't feel like I'm going to die...

When I'm in the bus, I watch all the people on bikes who get that sensation of being sucked under the bus, and just stare at us like we're riding piggyback on Death...

And yet, I'm actually interested in taking the Greyhound to Missouri this fall for a family reunion... I must be nuts...

good times, good times...at least you dont have to walk the 82 steps without a rest in-between. (it was 82, right?)

i have a kinda similar story with the monorail at Disney... as you can guess, we get stuck. the red monorail lost its air compressor, which they need to keep tire pressure up, brakes, door, A/C, etc. etc, so disney decides to stop all monorail traffic to get it back to maintenance. yippy for us, stuck for 35 minutes! with creepy people sitting across from us, of course! this was....last year, i believe.

::refrains from retelling light-rail/bus experience from a few days ago....::

1. It's fun to observe strange people because it gives you a feeling of being halfway normal.

2. You get busses with A/C in the US... now that would be a reason to move there. It gets really bad in summer and the only alternative I have to taking the bus is walking or taking the bike. For obvious reasons it's not always a real alternative.
