This is a Sim of my characters wife. I've made others of my characters family, and fiddled considerably with Sims Body Shop. If anyone wants an Avatar done of your character, please PM, email, or IM me.

Thanks,

Sam's Player

I know its actually been sometime since someone posted here, but I really need some help!

I downloaded the body shop from the link on the first page, and the ST uniforms from the other link, put them in my body shop downloads folder and they don't work

Im not using the full version of Sims 2, just the stand alone Body Shop

I need someone to help me with this. If anyone could add me to MSN: [email protected]

i would really appreciate it.

All those avatars are absolutely fabulous. I'd love to have one if anyone is willing to make it. Just use the picture of my character in my forum profile.

I'll be eternally grateful & worship you forever. Or a few weeks at least. =)

Yep, I'd be happy to make you one. I'm doing a few this weekend, including Sisson's, so you won't have to wait too long.

If your avatar or rank was something I designed or hosted, the link may now be broken to it. You can find the new URLs at this location. I can't guarantee how long I will have them up here though, so please upload them to your own computer and/or photobucket account to preserve them. Contact me if there are any isssues with this. Thank you!

For a basic avatar you can use SecondLife. It's an easy download and free service. If you want more detail for about $5 you can buy enough inworld currency to purchase more realistic looking skins, hair, and starfleet uniforms. Here's what I actually just did this morning.

I use some programs and photoshop. (Clearly.)

Actually in Second Life you might not need money. The lovely search feature is very nice in SL. It is pretty easy to mod a furry head down to the face only, and there are free ones. It is also pretty easy to make ears and a tail, or ridges. Rommie/Vulcan ears can be done by editing appearance or by making them. If you go to freebie beach, planet, or island you can find a lot of good updated items for free. Granted, have patience as some places are sorted better than others. Careful with some of those places if you do have Lindens/Money as there are one or two that do charge anywhere from 1 - 20 and one of them if you get too click happy will hit you for 100 and up. So grab what you can there. I don't know what YadNi's Junkyard and Freebie Warehouse have lately, but those are also places to check. I believe that the Galaxy sim (Sim typically means server in Second Life/SL speak.) might still have Trek uniforms. I believe my primary avie (An older avie might have a few of their older ones from when they were on mainland. - I'm not 100% sure on that I'll have to check. I know that I have at least one of their uniforms somehwhere.) I know that I have one that is not one of theirs which is very basic, free, and tintable in case you want to choose the department color. Send a PM to me here and let me know if you need one. (Adult grid only. - I have not updated the detail due to other obligations and projects I have going on in SL.) You can go to the builds in the Galaxy sim (DS9, TNG, I think they might have moved the TOS one. Make sure you have X-flight and fly around 400- 800 feet.) to take screenshots or to the Sci-Fi Museum in Indigo. They have a BoP and the Defiant builds there. Various places you'll find runabouts. Some are display a few you can go inside.

My message board avatar (Current as of this moment since I rotate them.) is from IMVU. The profile pic is SL, as was one of my prior avatars. I screencapped the avie and used promo credits to grab a uniform on the cheap. Then went into a white room, grabbed the screencap and photoshopped.

The avatar in my signature is from There.com using free 5 minute "try it" from auctions. (Did not buy them because I have an occasional bad paintball addiction. I get a little trigger happy even at 2 Tbux a paintball. :)) There are creators who have everything from TOS to VOY. (Example: Tiki Trek (Spoof with a lot of There references but an example of some of the uniforms.) This was created by users and the uniforms might not be exact becasue There screens and approves/declines developer and designer submissions after checking for copyright infringement.) Search the auction pages in ThereCentral. Usually "trek" will bring up some results. Or "space" if you really feel like searching. Keep in mind of the copyright, so chances are unless something slipped by the submission team, then you might not find it under "star trek" exactly.

I also use Poser from time to time. (Haven't posted those yet. Mostly use it for animations unrelated to image avatars.) But a free alternative would be DAZ3D. With both there is a lot of stuff available for free online if you search. I don't normally suggest these as they do have a steep learning curve for people who have never used 3D modeling software. Same applies to 3DSMax users.

Any questions about something I know/I should know about the avatars, ask in a PM *here* to get my attention. I get slammed in those places so I typically will not answer. I am usually buddies only and never check that email, or on another avie. In a PM here is the best place to ask. - Barring Poser, all are free. :)

I've been playing around with a free website called Meez.com to create wee little animated avatars this week. It's been fun creating a little character - putting funny clothing items together, hair colors not seen in nature and backgrounds. For those of us not techologically savvy to mess with Paintshop, etc, it seems to do the trick.

Yeah, Meez is like IMVU. I went with IMVU a long time ago because I knew people from There and SL who went over to IMVU. :)

I know that IMVU has some users who made trek sets. I just have no use for them other than screenshots, so I did not pick one up.

In There all I did was went to Tyr and took screencaps since it has the Crystal Garden and is all night there.

In SL there are quite a few locations with ST builds, which is where I took the screencaps.

Those are pretty straight forward as all someone might want to do is add text, if that.

(Exception is the Caitian avatar. That is just a texture/photo dropped on the inner face of a hollow cube. The Caitian I did buy a skin and some attachments for the claws, animated fangs, tail, whiskers, and ears. I created the nose out of sheer boredom. I also had scripted spinning lights, etc... like I said, I was bored.)

Also from time to time for the 'more advanced' users, Content Paradise gives away older versions of Poser. Which if you keep an eye out you can also grab a copy of that. Usually it is Poser 5, I'm not sure if they are giving 6 away yet since I own 6. There is also DAZ3D for the more advanced users, which is free.

For those of us not techologically savvy to mess with Paintshop, etc, it seems to do the trick.

::Still has a copy of PSP6.:: :)

That and TheGimp was what I used to learn before moving onto Photoshop. :)

There is also the beta for befunky.com which will cartoonize photos. That is also another option. I got an invite right away.

Outside of that, I did find the old trek outfits that used to be free in my older Second Life avie's inventory. If someone wants them, send me an offline IM. My SL name is in my profile here. I think they are TNG uniforms, I don't know what else. I have over 14,000 items on the other avie so it is hard to keep track.

(Also be warned that they have much better versions out now. :D But you'll probably have to pay if you decide not to make one.)

Does anyone know a source for SIMS uniforms from the TOS-Movies era? I've been able to find the TOS TV show and just about all of the modern uniforms but nothing for Movies II-VI. Anyone know anything about this?

Also, I'm willing to make sims avatars for anyone interested. Just PM me with general details -- hair/facial hair, race, rank, uniform color, etc. -- and I'll do my best to accomodate you if I can find the necessary skins (and be patient...depending on when you hit me, and how many other people are in line, I may be a little slow... :D ).

I am not aware of any sites. I've seen the series ones but not TOS and TOS Movie versions.

I might get hit for saying this:

You could try to do it yourself.

::ducks::

At least that is what I do, or I ask someone who is better than I am who has made Trek skins if they happen to have any.

A few people who do make trek skins/clothing usually have templates on the back burner that they have not released yet.

Never hurts to ask. I usually give out drafts to certain people if they ask or tell me they are looking for something. I know a few others who sometimes will do the same or there is a detail that they needed to fix and they give out the old version. All depends on the game and how difficult it is to skin. Also how well you network within said communities. :D

(I say 'possible to do it yourself' keeping in mind that most templates aren't as bad as this one. - That is the one I'm using lately and from the looks and experience of having to use it I have come to the conclusion that I must really like pain. That avatar mesh is horrible. There are also several uncontrollable 'bleed' areas in that mesh that keep driving me insane unless I slam those areas with detail that takes hours to do.)

Lol, I'm still trying to figure out exactly how people *do* make skins, but when I figure it out, I will certainly try to make some uniforms...we'll see...::grins::

I used to use PE Explorer and a Hex editor for modding games back in the day. (Maxis Specific: SimTower, SimCity - Other than graphics. I think I used it once or twice on SimCopter but most of those files were not bundled within the exe.)

I'm not sure which version of TheSims you're using or how different they are from each other... but there is SimPE for skinning. Read through and see if that is of any use to you.

I always have the Nvidia DDS plugins as several games use DDS image files. It makes for easier searching. The Photoshop plug-ins will work in Paint Shop Pro when installed in the correct directory (If you only have PSP.) or if pointed to the correct PS directory. (If you have both PSP and PS.) You will need the plug-ins and the texture viewer to edit and export any DDS file created. The Thumbnail viewer is optional. I highly recommend the Thumbnail viewer as most games usually have several image files and they are usually not clearly named.

If you are using TheSims2 and Bodyshop then try looking here.

Overview: Mostly you need to export the default skin and then paint over it on another layer. Then export/save it as a DDS file and import it back into the game. Some games require a certain MIP value and the good tutorials will tell you what the MIP should be. That is pretty standard with most games with avatars that can be skinned or games that allow users to make custom maps/levels.

(To keep it simple: The MIP is usually just a value that tells the rendering engine how to apply the texture to the avatar. Basically it maps out what part of the skin should go where on the avatar. Using the plug-in that number is entered before saving/exporting. All you need is the DDS plug-in to save and to know the numeric value when prompted. Nothing really too complex or convoluted that one needs to learn in order to skin.)

I looked around at some of the base Sims skin templates. I wish the SL templates were that easy. :D

Great! Thanks, I'll take a look at those sites!

EDIT: Looks like the program only runs on Windows...I'll have to see if I can find one that runs on Macs. Thanks for the links anyway!
