Time to start thinking about ShoreLeave 2006!!

193 posts in this topic

Folks at ShoreLeave this year were talking about the event's mobility and the comments that some on the Boards were making about their own cities. So, why not have a little friendly competition?

Just like the Olympics and the IOC that chooses host cities for the games, STSF will develop an SOC (ShoreLeave Occasion Committee?) of previous attendees of more than one ShoreLeave who plan on attending again in 2006. This committee will start entertaining proposals for moving ShoreLeave to somewhere besides Las Vegas.

Not Vegas, you say?? How will the event, in all it's weird splendor, survive??

That will be up to you, if you would like us to come hang with you (or in a city you like). So, here is what we're looking for for ShoreLeave 2006:

A ) The location needs to have easy travel access within the Continental US ("easy" will rule out, for instance, Terre Haute, IN, since the closest big airport is in Indianapolis, 90 miles away - nuh-uh).

B ) The travel and lodging costs need to be affordable (not the Helmsley Palace in NY, unless Leona is hosting us for free).

C ) A Trek-related event/locale/party/gathering. After all, it's why we all know each other. This may mean scheduling around a convention, for example (or having it near "Kirk's birthplace" or someplace we haven't thought of at all - be creative).

D ) Some accessable points of interest outside the hotel, including good food. This implies at least a small city environment. This point covers both nice/interesting restaurants (we've all been to Olive Garden, we want something good and unique) and other things to keep us busy in the evenings (it doesn't have to be a live show, but something fun).

E ) A nice pool and a date that can provide nice pool weather (we're not looking for a February ShoreLeave).

F ) **Extra Credit** Anyone want to come up with a name that isn't ShoreLeave? That name originally came from a Baltimore-area convention where we all first met IRL. Maybe it's time to call us something else. The Landing Party? The Away Mission? The Collective? The High Council? The Holodeck? Nerds on Holiday?? (okay, I just blew all the easy ones, you can take it from there)

To submit your ideas, please post them to this thread for all to see and comment on.

Deadline for submissions: Halloween 2005.

The STSF SOC will announce their decision (which could be Vegas again, you never know) by the end of the year. This way, folks can start saving their Latinum to come join us in '06, if they like what we're planning.

This is just a rough draft, since I want to jump on the gun here :D

Minneapolis/St. Paul MN.

A) With a nearby international airport, travel to the city shouldn't be too difficult. (Even Images can come :P)

B ) With numerous hotels in the area (Of just about every rating there is), lodging should fit almost anyones budget.

C) I'll check if there's any Trek/Sci fi conventions comming to Minneapolis (Namely the all inclusive connvention center) in 06.

D) For starters, there's the Mall of America, which has plenty of stores, and other things of interest, personally, I always have to visit NASCAR Silicon speedway when I'm there. There are enough other malls downtown to shake a stick at. Science Museums, The Xcel Energy Center, The Walker Art Center (Which was just renovated, they unveiled it at the end of May), and other stuff I'll add as I find it.

F) Name it Geek Meet '06.

P.S. Put it here! Then I can finally go to one of these blasted things!!!

I see you skipped over "E.)" Is that because it's never pool weather in Minnesota?

What about Montreal? It has all those things because it is a big city :P, and it has a flare of culture to it.

Heck you could go see Kirk's like childhood home!

::smirks::

The Star Trek Requirement is really the kicker in all of this....hmmm...

I can rattle a few...suitable locations, but I am unsure of their Trek Worthiness...I'll have to check for certain though...so here's a preliminary list, in no real order.

Atlantic City

Ocean City

Charlotte, NC

New Orleans (Ha! Sisko's BP! and Seafood to boot!)

Myrtle Beach

I'll continue to ruminate on this list, and make additions or subtractions based on my Trek-worthy findings, but all of the above should meet most of the requirements.

Just a reminder, folks. When you are ready to make a full proposal, we will need more than city names and general recommendations. Details, DETAILS!! (we are nerds, after all) We won't need you to make plane reservations for everyone, but specifics on hotel(s), restaurants, events, conventions, etc. are needed. Thanks.

Hey.. How about Toronto!

A ) Served by Pearson International Airport, Toronto is very easy to reach from virtually any city.

B ) Toronto has many hotels and because of the weaker Canadian Dollar is very affordable for Americans.

C ) I believe there is an annual Sci-Fi/Star Trek convention every summer.. Here is the URL for the 2005 show.

Canadian National Expo. 26-28 August, 2005

D )Toronto is a world-class city, with world class attractions.. The CN Tower -- the World's tallest Free-Standing Structure (553 metres) , Rogers Centre (a.k.a. the Skydome, home to our Blue Jays baseball team.. Ok ok.. not so much of an attraction, lol), The Harbourfront, and the Toronto Islands. There's also Paramount Canada's Wonderland, a short drive from Toronto, Ontario Place, and of course 4 hours away, is Niagara Falls. The pre-requisitive site you visit when Coming to Canada. :P

E ) Toronto summers are very warm, above 27 C ( 80 F ), making for excellent pool weather.

F ) About"Nerd National 2006"? ::Shrug::

I wouldn't mind going to Toronto, except for the fact that all us Americans would have to buy a passport, which is like 80 bucks right?

Folks, we don't mean to denegrate our members from other countries, but we need to keep this gathering in the US (really, the lower 48, if you want to get picky) for a variety of issues surrounding ease of access. I happen to know that Toronto is very nice, but it just makes things too complicated when we plan a gathering that is out of the country. Thanks.

Moving it to the EAST Coast for one year wouldn't be so bad though would it?... East Coast of the US that is.

East coast would mean only 8-10 hours flight for one weekend...that's acceptable. :P

Oh thats great, Trekkies gone Wild. I love it. I picture starfleet officers making faces at senior officer and unziping the turtle neck under their uniform. Show us a little neck people.

Ok, redid it again, with some links, I'll keep adding things, till you move the meet here :P

A ) Not much to say here, just the URL for the Airport, if anyones interested. Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport

B ) Heres a listing of some of the local Hotels and Motels. Minneapolis has just about every hotel for every price range I can think of...Hotel & Motel listings

C ) (Still looking into this)

D ) Heres a listing of some of the interesting things in the Metro Area: Mall of America The Walker Art Center The Science Museum of Minnesota The Como Zoo The Minnesota Zoo The Hennepin Theatre District (Includes the State, Orpheum, and the Pantages theatres) The State Fair Grounds (For anyone interested to going to the State Fair, which is August 25th-September 5th) Uh, I have other things, but for the sake of room, and the fact that it's 2:30 in the morning, I'll cut off here. If anyone wants anything addtional, you can post on this board, or PM me if you wish not to be known for some odd reason.

E ) Told about the weather already

F ) Did the extra credit too :D

:P ::Sniffles:: Aw you don't wanna come visit me in Terre Haute? You know the Wabash gives off this wonderful fragrance during this time of year, and at night there's a nice glow.

::shrugs:: Oh well you guys are missing out let me tell ya.

Ahh, bummer. :P You don't know what you're missing.

Hmm.. I don't really know of any American cities with much Star Trek attractions.

But I'll nominate Charlotte, North Carolina.

A. I believe it is served by Charlotte-Douglas Intl Airport

B. List of accomidations can be found here

C. There's a cool Star Trek roller coaster in Carowinds Featured in Startrek.com

D. List of attractions here.

E. Hey, It's Charlotte.. I don't think they know the meaning of the word 'Cold' there.

F. Already done.

I don't know if a simple roller coaster qualifies as a Star Trek attraction worth going to.. otherwise I'll go with Mithraia and go with Orlando. Universal Studios rocks. :D

Edit:

$80?! Holy cow. It's only like $65 to renew your passport in Canada.. but it's only good for five years, lol.

I know, that a bunch of my friends recently went to a trip to Spain for school, from what I can remember, it was around that much. Although, I believe it's a one time purchase here. But, I may be wrong :P

Chicago.

A. We've clearly got a major airport which is O'Hare. In fact we also have Midway. Plus we're somewhat in the middle of the country, so it's a compromise on travel times for everyone.

B. I'll admit, Chicago can run pretty expensive. The nice thing about a major city is that they have something for almost every budget. I'm not sure what price range we're looking at, but I could sort through that. More about this in part C. :P

C. This isn't very creative, but there's supposedly a 40th Anniversary Creation convention September 6-10 2006. I don't have much info because it's so far away, but I could always call them and see if they know any specifics yet. Only thing is, it's slightly out of the city (closer to the airport). The convention site quotes a "$99 flat rate single/double".

Take a look at the site for Wyndham, where the convention (and the rooms I quoted a price for) will be located. They have info on nearby attractions and dining as well if you would like to take a look.

There's not a whole lot of Star Trek history in Chicago, unless you count that TOS episode about the 20's mob. Exciting, isn't it?

D. It takes about half an hour to get from the airport area to downtown, so that probably hurts my application. However, I cannot even begin to list the attractions that downtown Chicago has to offer. We have museums of every sort, touristy places like Navy Pier, great shopping, a nice variety of food ... the list goes on. To check out local events and such I would recommend metromix.com.

I can look into seeing what's located closer to the convention, but I can't imagine people would want to fly in and not actually visit the city.

E. The average high and low temps in Sept. range between about 57 to the 70s. Not the warmest weather. July and August are warmer, but the convention's in September. On the other hand, it's not freezing and we have a plethora of indoor pools (including one at the Wydham). The average in July runs between 84 and 66.

F. I was always bad at extra credit. I'll let you know if I come up with anything.
