One Beat at a Time

“One Beat at a Time”

Stardate 0506.09

Ensign Tandaris Admiran

----------------------------------

Thump thump . . . Tandaris’ heart beat slightly faster than normal as the tricorder ran over him, scanning him. He had always been slightly nervous about doctors, even though his mother was one of them, and the constant examinations when he was a Candidate for Joining had not helped. His heart pumped blood while his mind reviewed events leading up to his arrival on the Excalibur.

Thump thump. . . .

Tandaris Admiran:

We are pleased to inform you that your application to Starfleet Academy has been approved. You have demonstrated extreme proficiency through the Academy Entrance Exam and will begin your education at the start of the next Academy year. Further details enclosed. . . .

Thump thump. . . .

Ensign Tandaris Admiran:

We are pleased to inform you that your first posting will be on the Sovereign Class USS Excalibur currently serving in the Gamma Quadrant as an assistant engineer. Further details enclosed. . . .

Thump thump. . . .

“You didn’t forget anything, did you dear?” asked his mother, worrying in that way mothers do when their child is about to leave the nest. She looked over his kit, resisting the temptation to go through it one more time.

“I’ll be fine, mother,” replied Tandaris. He hugged her and felt the soft wetness of a tear on her cheek. The next person to which he turned was his father.

Elir clasped his son’s hand firmly in that way fathers do when their child is about to graduate into the world of adults. Then, characteristic of his teddy bearish attitude, he pulled his son in for a hug. The embrace seemed to last an eternity before they pulled away and Tandaris wiped a hand across his brow, feeling the heat of the sun beating down upon them.

His little sister Tania wiggled her way between their parents. Tandaris accepted a piece of paper proudly offered by her chubby hand. It was a slightly smudged depiction of Tandaris, and the newly minted ensign smiled. Tania beamed back in that way little sisters do when their efforts are rewarded.

Tandaris folded the drawing and carefully placed it next to his other possessions. He wondered where his younger brother was, Marcis had disappeared briefly to grab something. He heard Marcis’ approach before he saw it, and turned to kneel down near his brother. From beneath the golden hair, a small boy held up Umb.

Umb had a history. It had started as a gift for Marcis when he was younger. Originally the stuffed animal had a more complicated name, but over a series of weeks the name shortened into something Marcis could pronounce—a combination of a vowel and two consonants that rolled off the “umm.” Thus named, the stuffed animal had travelled everywhere with Marcis, quickly establishing itself as an adventure animal.

Now Marcis was offering the lovable character to Tandaris. Touched, he took the animal and shook his head. “No, no, I can’t take this.”

The child petulantly pushed Umb into Tandaris’ chest. “Take Umb,” he urged imperatively, “When you go see the stars, Umb see them too.” The reason seemed simple enough, and Tandaris reluctantly but gratefully accepted Umb.

Thump thump. . . .

The Excalibur was big. Literally, Tandaris realized as he saw it dock with the station that it was a sleek, beautiful ship. He whistled appreciatively as he boarded and found his quarters, reflecting that he was lucky to get such an interesting assignment as his first post. Umb found a place of honour in the corner of his quarters and Tandaris left to wander the ship briefly before finding engineering. . . .

Thump thump. . . .

His meeting with Lieutenant Xavier seemed to go well; although certain aspects of Xavier were odd . . . showing Tandaris a cutlass had not exactly been expected. Lieutenant Chen was also interesting, and apparently had more than his share of troubles with pesky consoles.

Thump thump. . . .

A physical. Tandaris and physicals seemed to go together now, since they were a common thing amongst Candidates. The tricorder hummed and whirred noncommittally and his heartbeat quickened.

Congratulations to another winner of the Meritorious Achievement award. After careful deliberation, The Command Staff have bestowed this award on the following person for outstanding log writing:

Ensign Tandaris Admiran

(The Meritorious Achievement Award is awarded for excellence in log writing. It is generally awarded to a simmer who writes a log ore series that "blows us away." It can be awarded for various reasons: a log/series that shows a detailed and creative knowledge of Trek lore that is integrated into the sim, a log or series that is lengthy and exhibits a grand amount of work, a log/series that is emotionally touching, a log/series that grips us with drama, or a log/series that sends us to the floor laughing are all candidates for this award. As this is the most subjective of all of the awards, it is unusual in that it does not require joint command staff approval to be awarded. Another important consideration are other crew members' comments. So if you like a log, let everyone know why! )
