Kairi

First Day Blues

Kairi rushes into her quarters and seals the door behind her. Tears were streaming down her face as she leaned against the door, breathing heavy. After finally catching her breath, she went and sat down in front of her mirror, tears still running down from her lovely green eyes.

Kairi looked hard into the mirror, and covered her ears with her hands. She began wondering what her life would be like if she wasn’t different than everyone else in Starfleet. Maybe things would be much better. Maybe she would actually get along with her mother. And perhaps maybe people would notice her for who she was, and not what she was.

After calming down some more, Kairi got up and went to the closet. She changed out of her uniform and hung it up. Then she put on her dark red silk night gown and sat back at her mirror.

“Computer, activate personal log recorder.” A small beep signified that the computer was ready.

Kairi took a long sigh and began. “I blew it. My first day on Agincourt and I screwed everything up. It went well at first. I met my Department Head, Chief Prell and one of the other Assistants, Ron Lunn. They were both nice to me. Lunn even took me on a tour of Engineering, and that’s when it all went wrong. Towards the end of the tour, Lunn discovered my secret,” I said as I rubbed my right ear lobe and frowned.

“He started joking with me, but I panicked and ran off. He probably hates me now, but it won’t matter. Come tomorrow, when I go to get my physical in sickbay, it won’t be long before everyone else hates me too.” Kairi stared long into the mirror, another tear slowly creeping down the side of her cheek.

“Computer, end log.”

Kairi then got up from her seat at the mirror and laid in her bed. “Computer, lights off.” As the lights went out Kairi laid there, staring at the ceiling. She knew she wasn’t going to be able to sleep. So much was going through her mind. Moments later however, the slight hum of the ship lulled Kairi right to sleep.
