Ryan Kaufman was born on a farm in Iowa on the planet Earth. Though his parents had never had any affiliation with Starfleet, Ryan had always had an interest in space and decided to join right after high school.

 

After studying at Starfleet Academy for one year, Ryan was still undecided about what area he wanted to get into, so he sought the advice from one of his favorite teachers. The suggestion given to Ryan was engineering and propulsion technology, due to his interest in mechanics. So Ryan studied for the remaining three years and earned top honors in his engineering classes.

 

Upon graduation from the Academy, Ryan received a post on the U.S.S. Excalibur as an Assistant Engineering officer with the rank of Ensign.
