I'm so horrified, I had no idea there were elections! But thanks for the heads up--I'm definitely paying attention now.

Well, since I'm in Canada.. (Canada being a British Commonwealth), they do give the British elections alot more attention than most US Channels. I try to watch the news concerning the British elections and I definately do read articles for it on the newspapers, but the Torie (Conservative Party of Canada) government is pushing for another election of our own here to oust the Liberal Government, so that unfortunately has shifted my attention from the British elections.

Not surprising. Heck, the made-up news on The Daily Show is actually more accurate than the *real* news shows!

Why would the Canadian media outlets want to cover US channels anyway?

Well another four years with New Labour. Curses. Oh well I knew it was gonna happen, maybe one day the Liberal Democrats will win and students here will lose all these annoying top-up fees and a certain substance associated with University students will become more legal. :P

I'm actually surpised at the rather balanced vote turnout in this poll though! Quite interesting.

Oh how England longs for Maggie. I thought the elections were interesting...I'd be very surprised if the New Labour continues in its majority after another term.

I have never really been into politics, so I was a little confused when I got sucked into Parliment on cspan the other day. I had followed the British elections to a certain extent but nothing major...but parliment. That is my new favorite thing. They are crazy, they debate, yell and trash talk like nothing we have in the US. After the hour that I watched it I decided that I was gonna be more interested in world politics cause if thats how it works in england, who knows what else is out there.

What else is out there? You mean the machine guns and flame throwers? ;)

Aye, parliment is about the firey debate, nothing better then watching the ole time bickering on CPAC.

Man, its so much cooler than congress. Pure honesty, less saving face, more saying what they think. And they go absolutely nuts!

Saving face isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's certainly a main component of foreign policy.

Theres something deeply philosophical in the combination of the two viewpoints, though. Something like...

Be brutally honest with yourself, gentle with others?

Hey there,

Here is my view about Congress and this is something I think that happens within the United States or the United Kingdom.

When they want to, a law can be passed within three days. When they don't, a law will take up to six or eight months to get passed.

Any questions? ;)

Seems pretty accurate to me. ;)

Though, I will say that Americans seem to appreicate their leaders saving face more than the Brits do. It might have to do with the increasingly diminished power of the party system in the States versus the polarized parties of Europe. In Europe, when you're attacking a member of a parliament, you're attacking his party as well. Whereas in the United States, attacking an individual doesn't necessarily mean you're attacking his party. Parties in the states are more "big tent" and less extreme. Therefore, saving face is more necessary for the indiviudal in U.S. politics. Legislators on both sides of the aisle understand this and they (generally) abide by certain unspoken rules.

Yeah, thats one thing I noticed. There was much more of an emphasis in the UK on the parties than the men in charge of them. Problem with that though is you have people still voting for labour who forget that Blair's still gonna be running it.
