Tuesday 9PM Academy

[sTSF_Jami] Commanding Officer (CO) - STSF Jorlis

[sTSF_Jami] Stage Hand/ Gofer / Fill-in - STSF Jami

[sTSF_Jami] Operations Officer (OPS) - Ltjg Wimbley Murray

[sTSF_Jami] Tactical Officer/Helm (TACH) - Adm t'Lara

[sTSF_Jami] Chief Medical Officer (CMO) - Ens Lepage

[sTSF_Jami] Chief Science Officer (CSCI) - Wahyaking

[sTSF_Jami] That is your crew, Captain. Happy hunting.

[sTSF_Jorlis] Thank you, Jami. Stand by for the mission briefing...

[sTSF_Jorlis] -=/\=- STSF ACADEMY: MISSION BRIEFING FOR 4-12-05 -=/\=-

[sTSF_Jorlis] With the Academy Finals approaching, it's time for us to flex our neurons. The Amedi nebula has a reputation for being "haunted," but Starfleet believes there's a natural explanation for the history of strange occurences in its vicinity. The runabout Styx has been sent to crack this mystery.

[sTSF_Jorlis] -=/\=- BEGIN SIM -=/\=-

[admtlara] <TAC>::sitting at the mission ops station on the runabout reading about the Amedi Nebula::

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS> ::at the forward right seat in the forward compartment::

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> What is our ETA to the nebula, Mr. T'Lara?

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI>::Sitting at science console::

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO>::in the back updating his knowledge about the Amedi nebula::

[admtlara] <TAC>::calling up the navigational console:: <CO> Captain we will arrive at the edge of the system in 2 hours 20 minutes.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI>::studying the readings about the nebula::

[admtlara] <TAC><CO> Correction, Nebula

[sTSF_Jorlis] ACTION: 2 hours pass

[admtlara] <TAC><CO> We are entering the periphery of the Nebula.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS> ::monitoring power levels and other like things::

[sTSF_Jami] @<XO> ::monitoring the operation from the bridge of the USS Janus:::

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TAC> ::Nods:: Start slowing us down.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO>starting scans on the nebula sir

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Slowing to one half impulse sir. ::engaging the impulse propulsion systems::

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TAC> ::having noticed TAC's earlier reading material:: So, tell me, why exactly is this nebula labeled as "haunted"?

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CSCI> ::Nods:: First thing I want you to do is make sure Dr. LePage is aware of any radiation concerns.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO>aye sir

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> Strange occurrences reported from every ship that has visited this area of space.

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO>::looks up...now it's gonna be interesting, walks up to science console and stands next to wahyaking::

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> ::pressing:: Like...?

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI>::starts scanning the nebula for radiation and neurons

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> It seems minor glitches a sort of poltergiest phenomenon in ships systems.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> Really? Hmm.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO> ::Looks out the viewport at the outskirts of the nebula, listening to the crew discussions::

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> Sort of a Bermuda Triangle in space, then, huh?

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> One particualarly bizzard fatality involving an overheated food replicator.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CMO> Hhat do you think this is?::points at an energy ready of some sort::

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO> ::Frowns at the mention of a fatality::

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> An overheated food replicator?

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> I wouldn't say the scope of the reported haunting would reach such a disasterous effect as the Bermuda Triangle but similar.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI>*readings

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CSCI> Well I'm just a doc but I'd say whatever it is the level is not high enough to cause any problems.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CMO>Doc?

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> Severe burns resulted from an overheated phase transistion coil.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> Perhaps not, but it definitely seems analagous.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> Let's skirt the edge at full impulse, give Mr. Wahya a good range of view.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CMO>the closer we get the higher the readings get

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> Ow.

[sTSF_Jami] @<XO> :::receives the latest update from the Styx, plus the most recent reports from the Amedi Nebula encounters:::

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Aye sir circumnavigational aspect, increasing to maximum impulse. ::the runabout lurches forward::

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CMO>we should do the full range scan now

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CSCI> Maybe you should report it it to CO. And then maybe do as you suggest.

[admtlara] <TACH>::initiating a standard long range sensor sweep modelling the nebula in three dimensions::

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO> the closer we get to the nebula the higher the readings of radiation gets

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO/CSCI> ::monitors power:: Full power has been given to the sensor arrays.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO>i think we are ok here to do a full range scan of the nebula sir

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CSCI> Hmm. <CMO> Have you analyzed these readings? What distance would put us in danger?

[admtlara] <TACH><CSCI> We're going up over in an arc to the top of the Nebula so you can get a bird's eye view of the swirling mass.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO>we are fine right here sir

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> ::raises an eyebrow at Tactical's terminology:: "Top"? "Bird's eye view"?

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Approaching 90 degrees of arc captain, impulse engines holding steady.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CSCI> Is that your medical opinion, Mr. Wahya? ::Grins::

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CO> So far I am pretty sure the radiation won't be adngerouse. We should however keep an eye on it and stay at a distance of 20.000 kilometers.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><TACH>don't get close I don't want to risk losing the shields

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO>aye sir

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> Try to think in three dimensions cadet.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CSCI> I could divert some power to the shields. We could get at least maybe 100 meters closer.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CMO> Take a look at the readings, maybe you can devise an inoculant for us.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> I am, but in space there is no up or down.

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CO>Aye ,Sir.I'll do what I can.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><OPS>lets try it

[admtlara] <TACH>::keeping an eye out for other vessels entering or exiting the sector::

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CSCI> Provided Murray and LePage can keep our shields and bodies in tact... how close would you like to be to study the nebula?

[admtlara] <TACH><CSCI>::proceeding at 19,000 km from the edge of the system at full impulse.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO> I would say roughly about 150 mteres sir

Lt.(jg)_Dustin_Marks__MD has left the chat.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO>maybe closer

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CSCI> I'm not an expert but does this look like theta radiation?

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CSCI> ::diverts some power to the shields:: Aye, sir. Diverting power from the warp drive. <TACH> The impulse engines shouldn't be affected, but let me know if they are.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CMO> I think so doc

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CSCI> You want us practically inside the nebula. Let's take it a bit more slowly.

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Captain sir, we are approaching the other side of the Nebula at the 180 degree mark 5 minutes

[admtlara] <TACH>We're going at an awfully fast clip and so close to the edge.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TAC> The experts say we're safe so far. But... let's come to a stop here and let science take some detailed readings.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CSCI/CO> I've got the shields at 113 percent. We should be able to get... ::checks calculations:: ...105 meters closer. We might lose some shields, but it shouldn't be too too bad.

[admtlara] <TACH>::adjusting the navigational deflector::<OPS> These runabout nacelles aren't the strongest the shipyards have to offer we should backoff at bit on the speed.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO>sir Readings show radiation

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Acknowledged, all stop ::the runabout decelerates with agility and turns to face the Nebula::

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CO>Sir as far as I can analyze the readings we should take it slowly. There is a source of theta radiation.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CO>i think it's Theta Radiation

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CSCI> Can you make out the position of the source?

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO> ::Nods:: Hmm. <CSCI> Alright, we've come to a stop, let's scan this region of the nebula, see what else we can learn.

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CMO> I am trying to find out right now

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CMO> Scan the western part

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS> ::monitoring shield power::

[wahyaking203145] <CSCI><CMO> I'll scan the eastern part

[admtlara] <TACH>::brings the exterior audio pickups online:: <OPS>Let's listen a bit ::hearing strange sounds::

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CSCI/CO> ::notices a slight drop in shield power:: Shields are down to 110%.

wahyaking203145 has left the chat.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><OPS> Not much of a drop rate... no cause for concern, right?

[admtlara] <TACH>::shunting the supersonic regenerative coolant into the deuterium magnetic constrictors::

[admtlara] <TACH>::cooling off the impulse drive::

[sTSF_Jami] @<XO> :::turns to TAC at the report that contact with the Styx has been lost:::nods::: I imagine they have gotten close enough to the nebula to disrupt communications. We'll probably pick them up when they have finished.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO> Nah. It actually might just be due to the fact that I'm pushing them over 100 percent. Once it gets down to 100, though, I'll use the extra power to hold them steady, rather than to boost them.

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> Can you hear that?

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><OPS> ::Nods:: In the meantime, pick up the scans from science and check them out for us.

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO>::intent on the console, analyzing the readings further::

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> Just sounds like a little radio static to me.

[admtlara] <TACH>::can hear the reflection of the passive sensor scans like a faint sonar ping reverberating eerie sounds into the cockpit::

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> Of course, you may perceive it otherwise if you think this thing's actually haunted...

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO> Aye, sir. ::transfers science operations to own console and continues scanning::

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Well Captain I just like listening to deep space, especially the electromagnetic radio waves eminatting from this gaseous nebula.

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> And I don't believe in such fairy tales per say.

[sTSF_Jami] @<JanusOPS> ::wry grin:: Think this nebula is actually haunted, Commander?

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> Nebular study is always a thrill, I'll give you that. ::Grins::

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><OPS> Please tell me if you get any unusual readings. I'll be working on that inoculant.

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> If the Janus is nearby we might divert power from the Warp engines to the shields and actually enter the Nebula.

[sTSF_Jami] @<Janus XO> :::evenly::: Well...there have been some pretty strange stories floating about. ::shrugs, then grins::

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO> So far it just looks like your standard emission nebula.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> I'm not sure the risks justify that. We haven't sighted anything unusual.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO> ::reading from the prelim readings:: Temperature ranging between 7000 and 20,000 Kelvin...

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> I guess that radiation is pretty intense?

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><OPS>::raises one eyebrow:: what happened to the theta radiation source?

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><OPS> ::Nods:: <TACH> Let's set a course back to starbase. We can't hang around here waiting for something 'bizarre' to happen...

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CMO> Sorry, I'm not a scientist. I don't know much about that.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO> ...ionized hydrogen plasma...

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO> ...you get the drift.

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> The level of tension has increased. Setting course to Starbase ::inputting a straighline continuing to the 270 degree mark to the underbelly of the nebula::

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> Take us around for one more sweep of the nebula, then we'll head out.

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> When we reach the next mark we can go to warp on vector to the starbase.

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Aye sir, changing course for a lateral direction to the left. Increasing to 3/4ths impulse

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><OPS> theta radiation is caused by the oscillations of the vacuum angledue to a cosmic axion field. See if you can find anything that would fit that.

[1LT._Nesbitt] <<Fit that? Heck, I couldn't even say it!>>

[admtlara] <TACH><CMO> Are you suggesting there may be a singularity within the nebula?

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO> ::Raises eyebrow, looks at CMO::

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> This singularity could very well produce a gravity well which would have bizzare effects on ships and systems.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CMO> Perhaps you could. I'm not a scientist. I have no clue what to look for. Besides, the only thing I understood in your last sentence was "See if you can find anything that would fit that."

[Ens_Lepage] <TACH><CMO> I am just saying that there is a source of theta radiation.

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Approaching the extreme left wing of the Almedi Nebula now sir.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CMO> Isn't the nebula itself the source of this radiation?

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CMO> ::transfers readings over:: Here, Doctor, these are the scans. Maybe you can find them.

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO> ::frowns:: Alright I'll see what I can do

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> Theta Radiation could be produced if there were a collapsed neutron star deep within the nebula sucking in gas and imploding it outwards, that would also account for the oscillations and eerie pinging noises.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> Like I said, I'm no scientist. I'll take your word for it, though.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> Doesn't much account for system anomalies... though that could be poor engineering

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> What I don't understand is why our own graviton emitters are not being affected by what should be there if my hypothesis was accurate.

[admtlara] <TACH>::reducing speed and slowing to a crawl::

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> May just be a sign that it isn't accurate. If it's not the nebula, I want to know what's producing this radiation...

[admtlara] <TACH><CSCI> Try scanning the Theta Bandwidth.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> Or maybe a garbage scow got lost in there and is leaking, or another part of a ship.

[admtlara] <TACH>::laughs at the Ops theory::

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CO> Theta radiation occurs when a particle moves faster than the radiation it emits.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><TACH> Hey, for all we know, thatn might be just where that radiation is coming from.

[admtlara] <TACH>::ceases laughter and notices metallic objects going in and out of sensor range::

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Captain I think I just recorded metallic readings, a blip on the sensors.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CMO> Smashing, doctor. But why is that occuring in this nebula, that's the question.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> Blip? It's in the nebula, then?

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO/TACH> ::runs a diagnostic:: That's no blip. Sensors are working just fine.

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> It seems concentrated in a concentric ring around the lateral edge. I postulate that this nebula could be the result of a massive explosion.

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CO> That is exactly what I'm trying to find out. All I know so far is that we need a source for energy. Enough energy to move any particle that fast. ::shakes his head in disbelief::

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CO>I trust you don't want any details on theta radiation now.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> Most nebulae are, no? Let's take a closer look at that reading, it could be our source.

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> I'm bringing the Styx into the matter stream now ::the shields sparkle with bright metallic residue::

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CMO> We can discuss it later. Right now, we may be onto that energy source.

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><TACH> Humm...a massive explosion could cause theta radiation.

[admtlara] <TACH><OPS> Reading Cortenide, Fistrium, and Gallacite

[admtlara] <TACH><CO> Captain, these are not naturally occuring substances.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><TACH> ::Blinks:: Send everything you're getting to all stations, let's analyze it.

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CMO> Well, emission nebulae are sites of star formation. Perhaps a protostar exploded?

[admtlara] <TACH>::starring at the viewscreen awestruck by the black metallic objects floating in formation a green haze surrounding the shields::

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><CO>Possible there is a way we could find out whether this is our source. Details?

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><CMO> You'll have the data coming any second.

[admtlara] <TACH><CMO> Scan for biological residue or carbon molecules.

[admtlara] <TACH>::transferring the metallic composite breakdown to the CSCI::

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><TACH> Aye.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><OPS> What do you make of these metal readings? Any signs of structure or power readings?

[admtlara] <TACH>::feels like there is a pair of eyes watching her::

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO> ::looks over the readings:: Inconclusive. Do we have a class IV probe? It might help if we send it out if we do.

[Ens_Lepage] <CMO><TACH> We should try to measure the trajectory of an electron and a positron from a single gamma ray. That way we can determin the direction of the gamma ray and see whether what you've found there is the source of the theta radiation.

[sTSF_Jorlis] <CO><OPS> ::Shakes head:: Didn't bring any. We can close in a bit more. ::Nods to TACH::

[admtlara] <TACH>::eyes glued to the viewscreen paralyzed with fear, slowly a large black object approaches the ship part of the metallic stream, a scream slowly builds in her throat::

[Lt._(j.g.)_Wimbley_Murray] <OPS><CO> Hmm.

[sTSF_Jorlis] -=/\=- PAUSE SIM -=/\=-

So what was so scary about the eastern part of the nebula that caused wahyaking203145 to leave the chat room? B)
