Captain Halloway

Best Speed for Cardassia IV

In the center chair of the Sovereign-class starship Yorktown, Captain Thomas Halloway studied the unfolding situation. An image of Hutet, alias Cardassia IV, loomed in the background as the forward viewer centered on its largest, innermost moon.

From all appearances, he reasoned, they were dealing with another terrorist attack. But why here? And why now?

Hutet itself, although class-M, was still sparsely populated. Believed an exhausted resource after decades of exploitive mining by the Cardassian military machine, undiscovered vendarite and nitrium ores had been revealed after the recent evacuation of the system. But the attack had occurred on one of the moons, at a mining facility reconstructed with Federation assistance. Was the attack symbolic of the unwanted nature of such aid?

The Prime Minister, head of the provisional legislature, had already laid blame squarely on the Free Cardassia movement. It made sense, but seemed premature. Why would they attack their own people, instead of a more obvious target? Aegis was a secure site, but it wasn’t impregnable.

He considered the weapons themselves – torpedoes armed with biochemical payloads. What platform was close enough for the attackers launch from undetected? The sensor dropouts were far too coincidental to have been unconnected. How had they compromised those systems?

“Commander Hawke and her party are aboard,” his security chief advised from behind him.

Halloway stirred from his introspection, swivelling his chair around.

Yorktown was now under operational command of Aegis’ executive officer, but his orders from Admiral Meve were clear. “Get us underway, Sabrina,” Halloway directed. “Best speed to Cardassia IV.”
