The Road Less Traveled

To have doubted one’s own first principles,

is the mark of a civilized man.

- Oliver Wendell Homes

Juhdia made his way back to his quarters, making it a point to avoid the Doctors. Not that he felt their care was insufficient; it was more to the point that he did not need it. As he walked down the corridors he puffed on his cigar, thinking only moments before such an act was impossible. “Hoorah Starfleet.”

As Juhdia entered his quarters he called out, “Angus, here boy.”

The Denubian Ferret perked his head out from the seat cushion and ran to Juhdia. The lilt-framed creature jumped on Juhdia’s arm and curled itself around Juhdia’s neck.

Juhdia rubbed the Ferret’s head with his thumb, “I know boy, you missed me and I missed you. I hope they took care of you while I was away.”

Angus made a thwapping sound.

“Oh, really, well than, I will just have to kill them, then.”

Juhdia made his way to the bed and before he could get his boots off he was fast asleep.

Juhdia awoke the next day, refreshed, as he had not had a full nights sleep since the start of the mission. He took his cloths off and jumped in the shower, cold to wake him up, and then hot to relax himself. Once he was done with that, he dressed in his duty uniform and sat down for breakfast. But he could not eat. The thought of what he told Brian and Elaine weighed heavy on him.

“What in the frelling Hell were you thinking?” That thought echoed in Juhdia’s mind, he had too much respect for the two of them, to let them die not knowing the truth, about who and what he was. But now, now they knew too much. And if they let the knowledge of who he really was slip out, then Camelot and Excalibur would be, besieged by every Immortal in the galaxy. No, he had to start trusting.

“But can I trust those two?”

Juhdia got up and headed off to Main Engineering.

“Well, other than that problem, I have to file my mission report and then there is the issue of a one Adrian McKnight. That at least will prove to be an amusing distraction.” With that thought, Juhdia allowed himself a little smile.
