Who Wins The Golden Man?

Well, it's that time of the year again, with Hollywood all a buzz. And it's time yet again for my Oscar picks. Now, as you all remember I did pretty good last year, missing only one category, but I never thought that Return of the King was going to sweep at the Oscars; that was quite the surprise to me.

But, it's not gonna be as easy to call the categories this year, as the competition is fierce. As such, I'll pick the movie I think will win, and then the ones I wouldn't be surprised if won. This year I'm also only going to touch on the big six: the supporting catergories, the Best Actor and Actress categories, Directing, and Best Picture. So... here we go again. :o

Best Supporting Actress:

Cate Blanchett - THE AVIATOR (Miramax)

Laura Linney - KINSEY (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

Virginia Madsen for SIDEWAYS (Fox Searchlight)

Sophie Okonedo - HOTEL RWANDA (United Artists)

Natalie Portman - CLOSER (Columbia Pictures

The name in bold is my pick to win, and the name in italics is the one I wouldn't be all too surprised if that person did win. Cate Blanchett, which some of you may remember as Galadriel from Lord of the Rings, did a fantastic job in her portrayal of Katherin Hepburn in the Aviator, and she's the odds on favorite to win. I'm sure the Academy will love the irony of awarding an Oscar to an actress who played a former four time Oscar winner. But don't count Natalie Portman out, it's a longshot, but she could win. She did after all win the Golden Globe over Blanchett, but as we know, the Hollywood Foreign Press is far different from the Academy.

Best Supporting Actor:

Alan Alda - THE AVIATOR (Miramax)

Thomas Haden Church - SIDEWAYS (Fox Searchlight)

Jamie Foxx - COLLATERAL (Dreamworks SKG)

Morgan Freeman - MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Warner Bros.)

Clive Owen - CLOSER (Columbia Pictures)

A tough one to call. Morgan Freeman has been nominated three times before of an Oscar and as never won, this could generate a sympathy vote for him and could give the the award. He did a fantastic job in Million Dollar Baby, but if anyone remembers my rant from a few months ago, I touched on Closer and how I felt that Clive Owen deserved a nod, and looky here, he got it. If he hadn't won the Golden Globe, which he won over the favorite Morgan Freeman, we probably would not have seen his nomination. So, don't be surprised if Clive pulls the upset over Morgan Freeman and wins the award; both of them deserve it.

Best Actress in a Leading Role:

Annette Bening - BEING JULIA (Sony Pictures Classics)

Catalina Sandino Moreno - MARIA FULL OF GRACE (Fine Line Features)

Imelda Staunton - VERA DRAKE (Fine Line Features)

Hilary Swank - MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Warner Bros.)

Kate Winslet - ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (Focus Features)

Once again, a battle between Hilary Swank and Annette Bening. Back in 1999, at the 72nd Academy Awards, Swank pulled the upset over the Bening, who was nominated then for "American Beauty", with her win for "Boys Don't Cry". Once again, these two meet and this year I'm fairly sure that Swank will win once again, this time as the favorite. But, don't be surprised if Ms. Bening pulls the upset on Swank this year and takes the Oscar; a bitter sweet irony for Bening.

Best Actor in a Leading Role:

Don Cheadle for HOTEL RWANDA (United Artists)

Johnny Depp for FINDING NEVERLAND (Miramax)

Leonardo DiCaprio for THE AVIATOR (Miramax)

Clint Eastwood for MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Warner Bros.)

Jamie Foxx for RAY (Universal Pictures)

Most people would agree and say that Jamie Foxx is a clench for this award, and I would agree with them :P. Jamie Foxx will more than likely win in this category, his only real competition for this award is Leonardo DiCaprio, who did a very good job in his protrayal of Howard Hughes. But, the dark horse in this race would have to be Don Cheadle for Hotel Rwanda, hence why I added his name in. Cheadle pulled in a wonderful performance in the film, and he could pull an Adrian Brody on all of us and wind up winning the award, hence why he gets honarable mention. :o

Achievement in Directing:

Martin Scorsese for THE AVIATOR (Miramax)

Clint Eastwood for MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Warner Bros.)

Taylor Hackford for RAY (Universal Pictures)

Alexander Payne for SIDEWAYS (Fox Searchlight)

Mike Leigh for VERA DRAKE (Fine Line Features)

Best Picture:

THE AVIATOR (Miramax)

FINDING NEVERLAND (Miramax)

MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Warner Bros.)

RAY (Universal Pictures)

SIDEWAYS (Fox Searchlight)

Alright, here in lies the dilema. I personally think that if Marty Scorsese wins in the Directing category, then "Million Dollar Baby" wins Best Picture, but should Clint Eastwood win in the directing category, then "The Aviator" will more than likely win Best Picture. Of course I could be wrong and either one can sweep these two categories, but I think it's a safe bet that Marty will win for Directing, but that Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby" will win the big award of the evening. But, another dark horse pick I would have to mention in the Best Picture category would have to be "Sideways". The film has a tremendous following and has been doing fairly well this awards season. So while everyone talks about "Million Dollar Baby" and "The Aviator", don't be too surprsied if "Sideways" sneaks in under the radar and pulls in the win.

And there are my picks for the night, if they *will* win... I have no idea cause these races are just too close to call. Guess we're just gonna have to wait and see. :D

Man Sideays desrves the oScar but it won't get it. It's the oscars man. You'll never get a true representation of film.

well I am happy with this year's Oscar's so far...

But man I was mad at the grammy's  Green day won a Grammy( I was happy about that) but the other 2 good awards should have went to who I wanted ( I forget now..... but I know Green day was nominated for one of them).... but instead they went to Ray Charles <_<

Well, The Aviator deserves to clean house. It was a good movie. The only things I didn't like about it were it was 3 hours long and it ended suddenly, before Howard's eccentricities got really bad later in his life.

Meh, I didn't even see any of the movies nominated in any of the catagories. I retired from the cinema after LOTR. And I've been too lazy to walk five blocks to the movie store...

BTW Vanroy, if you want to put the 'All your base are belong to us' in your sig like I had, I can give you the link.

that was for the Grammy's.

But they do that all the time, when a great legend dies then the grammy awards comes, they hand the awards to him.

Really I never heard once those new songs that Ray charles made before he died and that won the grammy award, but I hear all those other songs lots of times. I think they did this too before with someone else.

Oh well, I wanted jamie fox to win for Ray, he did a great job.

for some strange reason, I don't think that will hold true for Weird Al.
