At one point in history, fairly up until several decades ago, smoking was actually considered to be snotty, for lack of a better word. Many of the upper class did it, and it signified the "elite".

sigh, one line from Constantine reminded me of this topic.

"You're dying young because you've smoked thirty cigarettes a day since you were fifteen."

Abdullah 'Firimbi' Hassan: "That's right! You Americans don't smoke anymore. You live long, dull and uninteresting lives."

That's from Black Hawk Down ;)

I thought that was from Three Kings but your right....Anyone ever watch the movie... "The Insider" with Al Pacino and Russel Crowe? It's about big tobacco.

Another gem

It has always been my rule never to smoke when asleep, and never to refrain when awake.

Ok what I want to know is why Tobaco is legall although it has absolutely no helpfull benefits like medicall or something. Yet Marajuana is eligall, eventhough it has been prooven to help cancer patients? What's the deal?

Ok this is not my ideah but I thought it was funny. My friend said that everyone who already smokes should register and after a certen date noone else can register. Everyone who has registered can keep smoking and after that noone will be allowed to smoke. She thinks that if we instituted a system like this we could make smoking eligall.

No offense, but that doesn't make much sense to me. I don't approve of banning smoking outright, people have the right to do what they want to them selves. If the goverment wanted to start deciding what was right for a person to do to themselves or not, they'd ban abortions.

But...I'm off track. I don't think smoking will be phased out completly. People still smoke, dispite the health warnings, despite the high taxes on packs now, and despite having it banned in nearly every public place in this country.

Yes, nicotine is addictive, I'll admit that, but not so addictive that people cant give it up if they want. I did it once, but then realized I like smoking. ;)

Yeah. all non-smokers seem to think we're trapped in some eternal hell and that we don't actually like doing it!

Like I said I though her Idaeh was funny! I don't think that we will ever get rid of smoking. Als it is just a habit, think about it I drink soda! I love my cafine! But what makes me mad is that someone can get cigarets for an adiction, but a cancer patient can't get the Marajuna to halp them!

Marijuana has 4 times the cancer causing agents than cigarettes before the additives that most marijuana cigarettes have anyways. There are other ways to ease the pain caused by cancer and other ailments that do not involve lighting up a joint.

Yeah, my girlfriend always asks me if I hate that I'm going to die of Lung Cancer and stuff, and I tell her that I'd rather die of that then being in some horrific car crash, over having my groin gored by a bull.

She said the second one probably wouldn't kill me. I said yeah, but I'd kill myself after that.

They say smoking takes, on average, 5 years off your life. But let's face it, those last 5 years usually suck anyway. ;)

Yeah I'm a movie freak. Say something and I'll find a line to link it to. Every time I do that my flatmates yell "Films! Films!" at me.

Sorry Travis, this is the textbook excuse that addicts use to justify their addiction to anything. You're fooling yourself. And after smoking for at most what ... two years? you can't compare your experience quiting with someone who's smoked a pack a day for ten years.

How many adults have you asked about their quitting smoking experiences? You may want to learn what you're in for. I'm certainly not telling you to quit, but you should know what you've signed up for.

And as for the car crash / lung cancer / gourged by a bull scenario, I personally vote for quick and final over painfull, lingering, helpless and dependant on others. It's just a preference.

Moose

P.S. I'm still not going to tell you to quit. It's none of my business. But this is a public discussion board so I'm going to feel free to share my opinion.

My dad smoked for fifty years before he quit. He says he's glad he did it for my mum who has asthma (who I NEVER smoke round because of it) but he admits he did like smoking and would if he didn't care so much for my mum. Hell I'd do the same if I ever married a non-smoker but I do enjoy it and so did he...oh and another guy who lived nearby and did it for 60 years before quitting for his wife too. ;)
