Any Smokers?

96 posts in this topic

One of my favourite things in Trek was that during the filming of one of the movies (i believe Khan) in one of the early scenes being filmed there was a "No smoking" sign on the bridge. Gene made them take it down because he said that in the future smoking would be a thing of the past.

Anyway as a smoker I found this quite amusing. I like the idea of a clean future but God knows how we'd accomplish it! I realised that if I was in the future I'd be in hell! Very random topic I agree.

Anyway any smokers here? Or anyone got something to say about smoking and Trek? I don't think anyone ever did in Star Trek though I do recall Worf doing so in a white suit in DS9 (is that right?).

TNG was against smoking...a few episodes mentioned it and how barbaric and ridiculous it is. Gene was definately against smoking.

But Gene didnt run DS9 so his 'vision' was probably distorted in that DS9 episode. In any case I would have to agree that smoking would be erradicated in the 24th century...we're already seeing smoking being stamped out in modern society. Once the 'coolness' of smoking is gone and the current smokers die off, it'll be a dead industry.

As much as I am against smoking, I have to disagree. I really don't think we'll ever see smoking completely disappear. 1) The tobacco industry as a whole remains quite strong, despite major lawsuits brought against it. 2) Even if smoking loses its "appeal to the masses," I think it'll still stay around at the very minimum as a speciality item found in aristocratic-like circles.

My two cents.

You hear that Dumbass? We're aristocrats now! Oh darn it, I'm gonna have to stop wrestling in mud.

I think it'll disappear completely because it's something that is growing more and more taboo. Here in my province it's illegal to smoke in any place of business and within 15 meters of a public building. There is also huge anti-smoking campaigns going on right now, it's funny because one was playing while I was typing this for www.stupid.ca .

I find myself... ahem... sort of agreeing with Grom. I don't think smoking will completely disappear anytime soon, even in the non-aristocratic circles. We've known that smoking is dangerous for about 50 years, and yet people (albeit in smaller numbers in the US/Canada) continue to start smoking. In some places (heck, practically all of Europe), smoking is nowhere near as taboo as it is in the US/Canada, and the same science is known in both places.

Is that taboo? :P

I'm kinda underage, so, no comment about if I smoke. :P

As for there being no smoking, I doubt that would be possible. Just look at enginering. The machines are always smoking in there. :o

Also, Gene said zippers would not exist in the 23rd Century, so....

I could see it loose appeal to people (either because the Federation doesn't want to risk damage caused by a cigarette or because futuristic people are trying to take care of their bodies), but I don't think it could completely die out (because we'll introduce it to the Ferengi).

Yeah, that's the same for Ontario too. It's now illegal to smoke in bars, restaurants or basically any other public establishment ($5000 fine). I even heard from BBC that it's now illegal to smoke in Irish pubs, and they're considering making smoking in bars illegal in the EU. (Correct me if I'm wrong). As Nem said, there's now alot of anti-tabacco movements on TV and media. As cigarette prices continue to soar, and so many more places prohibiting smoking, I'm inclined to disagree with Grom and say that by the 24th century, smoking would have go the way of the do do, for a long long time.

I have seen smoking ruin kids lives. But when I talked to them, all that they said was that wanted attention and smokers seem to get that. Its bad crap, and shouldn't be existant. There are better ways to make yourself happy or to pass the time......Snowboarding, Star Trek, playing poker in a speedo in the winter, etc.

I dunno though. Star Trek always has fumes coming out everyone, even in space.

There are those who would swipe the incense out from under Tuvok's nose and prohibit Native Americans from practicing their traditions. As for me, I'll have a cigar around the campfire while stargazing but I don't inhale. Sweet pipe tobacco is really nice, but if you're breaking the law or getting addicted, you shouldn't touch the stuff. There's nothing wrong with gambling, drinking, or smoking on special occassions, but it should not consume your life.

"For many years I was high on life, then I built up a tolerance."

I love that quote.

I would never smoke...

I'd rather die than smoke...

Good thing they teach us in school not to smoke!

With all the amazing medical feats that futeristic science fiction has, I can't IMAGINE that there wouldn't be medical methods to break just about any addiction. And for those that would enjoy a good smoke in Trek time, can't we just regenerate any lung deterioration ANYway?

I live a relatively healthy lifestyle, but let me tell you, if there were a way to embrace one not quite so healthy in the future using the medical benefits available... I most certainly would! Fabulous donuts that don't make you fat, high-test espresso that doesn't give you heart palpatations, various tobaccoish products that don't give you lung cancer, and booze that doesn't rot your brain... Let me at them!

That's actually an old wives tale. There is no medical proof that caffeine intake leads to heart attacks.

Alcohol kills brain cells. That's a medical fact. However, the rules of biology being what they are, the weaker brain cells will die first. This leaves the rest of the brain stromger and more robust!

At least that's what one of my professors told me in college.

Donuts don't make you fat. It's the pants that make you fat. At least that's what my ex g/f said.

I'm a smoker Images. In TNG didn't someone smoke in one of the Dixon Hill scenes. One of the crew that is. Anyway I think we will still have smoking rights in the future. Trek teaches the idea of tolerance and isn't letting me slowly kill my lungs my choice and shouldn't others respect my rights. Just a thought.

I don't know about TNG, but in the Dixon Hill holodeck scene in First Contact Nicky the Nose lit a pipe with a match he struck on his nose.

Mark Twain wanted to smoke a cigar but Troi wouldn't let him.

Alright i work at a gas station, and sell cigarets. i am constently having to deal with minors trying to buy, at least 4-5 a week! Any way Even if smoking is eliminated in the future there will be something to take its place, it could be more dangerous, or not, but every generation has something, and there always will be!

Be VERY careful when selling those cigarettes. In most states the laws are harsher on you than on the smokers.

I once went into a cornershop to buy a can of Ambrosia. I saw two eight year old girls behind me, playing hopscotch in the line. When I left I heard one ask "A pack of 20 please". Brought a tear to my eye. What is happening to this planet of ours? That shouldn't happen.
