Rate ENT's episode "Affliction", I saw it last night. And it was AWESOME. Surely best episode of the season for me. Although I loved "Observer Effect"

I enjoyed it immensly, and appreciate Star Trek trying to tie up the notion of the TOS Ridgeless Klingons.

I was loving the "Covert Ops" Reed.

I'm a fan of "espionage / covert ops" storylines, Reed has always been a favorite character. Put the two together - I am a happy camper.

Affliction - Well done episode all around.

Great episode! The explanation for the TOS Klingons is priceless (can anyone tell if it contradicts established Trek canon? I can't see how!). Of course, they can't "resolve" the issue because the ridgeless Klingons have to survive to become dominant in the 23rd century. It could be an explanation of the Klingon-Federation war - they had a cold-peace relation with the wrong Klingons.

I also like how they're bringing in Columbia. Anyone notice that Columbia's got a flashing light behind the bridge that goes on when it goes to warp? That's got to be annoying. :-).

I don't know that I like the idea of having T'Pol perform a successful mind-meld with Hoshi -- didn't Spock not know if you could do one with a human a hundred years later? Also not sure about bringing in Section 31... hopefully, the writers will keep its existence quiet, so it can still be a surprise to fleeters 200 years later. Its 22nd century existence, incidentally, is not a problem for Trek canon -- it was established in the Starfleet charter, according to some DS9 episode where it was introduced.

well DS9 says that Section 31 has been around for like 300 years..... that would mean before the federation and starfleet get created. So it makes sense that there is a section 31.

And that light on Columbia was annoying, just imagine looking back and seeing that all the time

yea, the light thing is a bad thing. I don't know if I like there idea about how the klingons lost there ridges and all, but it makes for a good story to scare there kids with.

Those were lights? Thank god, I thought they had a warp coil running up the back of the Bridge for no reason! Yeah, those things are very annoying, and stupid.

Hey there,

Overall, thought it was a great episode. One of the funny things about it actually doesn't deal with the show. Apparently, last week's episode (conclusion of the Romulan arc) was (according to last report I saw) just about one of UPN's highest rated shows for the entire week. Ratings for Affliction are supposedly coming in at the same level.

So now UPN is going to be cancelling a show who's ratings are coming in above many of the other shows. On top of it all, Nielson just announced last week they have apparently made a gross error with the publication of show ratings for this season. From the report, they have not been counting people properly who have been watching shows on digital cable services...something that's not very common in many larger markets. It's causing them to have to start a process of revising every rating they've made for the entire season (mentioning that for many shows, ratings will go up since markets were not included the first time). Go figure.....

As for the show and canon, it actually supports it. Manny Cotto said that was one of the main purposes of the episode, to explain what the heck happened to the Klingons (at least, in the Trek universe. We all know what really happened). Only mention of the situation was when Worf stated in Trials & Tribbulations that "It was a matter of great embarrassment. We do not discuss it with outsiders."

Dealing with the "lights" on the bridge, a similiar bridge design was actually seen for the NX-01 during that episode set in the future...with the Xindi having successfully destroyed Earth. My guess is they are probably an early form of plasma conduits, being used to help power quite a few systems Enterprise itself doesn't have. Columbia, as I recall, has a much more powerful weapon system and their ability to withstand attack is something like 30% better than that of the NX-01.
