Federation, Romulan Empire to Launch Joint Scientific Venture

Since the discovery in 2370 that warp travel was disrupting subspace, scientists have closely studied faster-than-light travel. Improvements in warp technology such as that installed in the Intrepid-class starships permitted the abolition of the warp speed limit, but there was still concern in the scientific community regarding the long-term effects of warp travel. New methods of FTL transit became a developmental priority.

 

Now, with the signing of the Versailles treaty, Federation scientists have joined with Romulan in an historic joint study, the first of its kind. Their goal is to make a comprehensive investigation of methods of faster-than-light transit, including transwarp corridors, as well as other technologies that have the potential to be adapted, notably cloaking fields.

 

Although the project is still in its infancy, scientists and politicians alike are optimistic about its prospects. "Even if no viable technology emerges from this study," says Thomas Brown of the Federation Science Council, "it will still be remarkable for its historical value. This is the first truly joint mission between the Federation and the Romulan Empire."

 

"Science meets more easily than culture," Senator Sulak of Romulus opines. "It is a universal language. This project with will open new lines of communication between out peoples."
