"Why Do You Do What You Do?" - Part II

Lieutenant Junior Grade Garnoopy

Personal Log Stardate 50303.05

“Why Do You Do What You Do?” – Part II of II

Shamor returned Garnoopy’s stare, “Even if it means sacrificing the life of one crewman to save the ship?”

A grunt came from Garnoopy. “If it is for an honorable cause. Saving the ship would be an honorable cause.”

Staring into Garnoopy’s eyes, Shamor responded “You follow laws too closely Garnoopy, I can see it in your eyes.” Pausing for a moment, Shamor noted Garnoopy did not respond, and continued on. “You are what is classified as a "Lawful Good" person. You follow rules and laws without question. You'll have to learn that some rules are meant to be broken in order to do what is right.”

“If it is for an honorable cause, protocol is meant to be broken” Garnoopy responded.

“Here's what I'm trying to say, follow your heart and your instincts” Shamor said.

A grunt came from Garnoopy and he stated simply, “Understood.”

Shamor studied Garnoopy for a moment. “I hope you perform well because I have high expectations for you.” He paused, then said simply “Dismissed Lieutenant.”

Garnoopy stood, and left sickbay, heading back to the bridge to man the tactical station.

He placed a request to leave Starbase in, and was promptly replied with the authorization. The Reaent eased out, and set off into space.

Without warning, a massive energy buildup exploded from the location of the USS Cairo, sending out a shockwave. Instantly, voices on the bridge informed the Captain of an incoming shockwave. Garnoopy raised shields, despite no orders to do so, and before anyone could brace for impact, the shockwave hit, sending crewmembers flying and the ship shaking.

Still standing, Garnoopy tapped the tactical panels, looking at the Reaent status.

“Shields at 54%, they prevented major damage. Only slight damage to ship systems” Garnoopy immediately reported.

A standard automated distress call emanated from the Cairo, and Garnoopy reported it, receiving no response to hails. Garnoopy informed Starbase 345 of their plans to intercept, and went back to scanning, wondering what in blazes went wrong on the Cairo.
