Meh, I think we have a good balance between more 'traditional' sims in and 'non-traditional' sims as it is, because time contraints are a factor too. I chose my first sim, Aegis, partly because it was at a good time for me. My character there is human because, as N'Dak said, a lot of us are most comfortable playing humans :P

When I heard about Challenger coming out, I was already thinking about joining a second sim, and it seemed like a great opportunity. I played a human during the message board inception of the ship, and when I joined the ship's crew, I chose a human as my second character. I don't know exactly what prompted me to choose human, in retrospect it would have been a lot of fun playing a Denobulan science officer. But Dave Grey is a lot of fun, I made him a cousin to my summer character and now his chief hobby is being tortured by myself and life in general. :D

If I find the time to join another sim, I'd probably join a less 'traditional' one, although middle-of-the-week late-night sims are not good times for me right now, as I have school. :P

A MACO sim sounds interesting, and it could work, although personally I wouldn't be interested, because I gravitate toward science and engineering personnel. A MACO unit would probably need a few engineering marines, medical marines, et cetera, and if they had their own starship, they'd need some normal personnel on that perhaps, so I could see something like that working.

What I'm kinda surprised by is that there isnt a wider variety of federaton classes among the sims. We have one Galaxy, an Ambassador (which used to be a sovvie), a Nebula and two current Sovereigns. Seeing the vast responses on the "starship class" thread started by that illustrious helm officer, you would think there would be more, and more unique classes available here. Granted Aegis has the cool norway class, and the nifty lookin centaur. I mean considering people have poked fun at star trek because the Federation designs a new class every month... I have no problem with the ships we use, i just might expect a little more variety.

This could go back to what I was saying earlier about being comfortable with the canonocity of an object, in this case a ship. From the series-es we've become pretty familiar with Klingon vessels, Romulan vessels, and a few Starfleet vessels. we know how they work, what they can do, what their layout is for the most part.

I personally would love to see some Steamrunner's, Norway's, Sabre's, and the like, but the most we have seen of them is in the backround of a large fleet formation. We know they are there, but the series hasn't established any real facts about them yet, except maybe the bare statistics.

I agree to some extent, however I think that there's enough canon, semi-canon, and non-canon information out there to establish a sim. We can always use our imagination.

For those of you who lack sufficient imagination (you know who you are, Odo), more imagination RAM can be purchased from Dr. Tratos. :P

Since when did we pay attention to what was cannon? :P

Well, on Monday nights we do mix up what we do. For the most part, we run every other week, either a Federation or a Rihannsu sim. However, occasionally to mix things up, we have run other ships. For the most part, these other species sims have failed due to lack of interest, lack of knowledge of the ship/race or people just not wanting to play that species.

After being pressed to run a Borg Academy, I gave in and did so. I believe we simmed less than 15 minutes before everyone was asking if we could restart and do something else. We did liven it up a bit by attacking a Federation ship, but again, they more or less, had to follow the Borg Queen's Action Statements....so, it more or less turned into a game of "Simon Says'.

Ferengi Academy. This had some potential, however some of the crew decided that unlike the Ferengi ships you've seen in the show, where there is discipline and they follow orders, that they were going to mutiny and steal the ship. It quickly got out of control, and had to be shut down.

Cardassian Academy. This one didn't run too bad, except some of the folks that normally play Bajorans, didn't like the whole 'let's go capture and enslave the Bajoran's plot". Again, not too much interest.

Vulcan Academy: BORING......

Alternate reality Academy. This one worked to a point, however, without some structured discipline, and knowing who was in charge, everyone decided their alt was some super powerful evil being. This got way out of control and has not been run again.

We have also ran just departmental Academies, with everyone posted as an Engineer, or a medic. I loved the day everyone was assigned as part of the SCE, and were excavating a whole in the middle of an asteroid as I sat and drank coffee...very satisfying. LOL.

I will say though, the days we have had ships attacked by the crew of Borg-ified Pakleds, have been some of the funniest other species Academies.

Ah yes, I remember a sim where everyone was an engineer. We had to save some trapped miners, however things went catastrophically wrong. (As they always do). Since everyone's tag was <AENG> (with the exception of CENG), we started just calling each other by our number. Good times. :P

Didn't the mine director blow the whole complex up with a cigarette? :P

Errr, anyway, I'd like to see a Dominion sim. That would be fun. Oh yes. :P

Yeah, those are funny. The Pakled Borg beam themselves to the kitchen and start assimilating toasters, microwaves, refrigerators, etc.

What really makes them funny, however, are the Cadets who don't seem to realise the whole thing is a joke! :P

Was that the Ferengi academy where the landing party was beamed back to the bridge naked so the captain could be sure noone was hiding any profit? :P

A Borgified Pakled? "We are Borg, resistance is uhhhh... we assimilate things." :P

Zaphod,

"You will be assimilated, meow."

This isn't too far off from what they actually say.
