Question of interest

38 posts in this topic

I just have one question. Why don't we have more 'foriegn' ships? It seems that we have mostly Federation ships and a few others (one Romulan, one Klingon), and I'm wondering why don't we have more of the others. I sure it'd be possible.

Quick Answer: We need a larger population that express the desire to sim on foriegn ships. Mind you this is not the "offical" answer, but as a simmer for 1 too many light years, I think that sums it up.

Andrew is mostly right...

It's a known fact that non-traditional (Klingon, Romulan, Vulcan, TOS Era, etc.) do not generate as much interest from simmers. Furthermore, non-traditional sims are not usually a recent graduate's first choice. Non-traditional sims are usually composed of your advanced simmers wanting to take their RPing to a different level. Personally, I've never wanted to do that, but I know experienced simmers that have. I'm sure Huff and Blu can explain the positives and negatives to launching and running a non-traditional sim.

We also have a TOS sim (Hood), as well as an ENT era sim (Challenger)as well. But, it takes a certain kind of simmer to be interested enough to join one of those specialty sims. There usually isn't as much people in here, as some of the regular mainstream TNG Federation sims. I don't know what else there can be, since STSF covers basically all aspects of Trek simming, but if there's enough interest, maybe another "Foreign" type sim,can become a reality.

I don't know. You got me! I guess that can also qualify as another Question of Interest, eh? :P

Maybe another thing is that dealing with foreign ships with foreign governments requires more to make up and invent then a regular TOS,TNG-era sim since there may not be a lot of canon info to go on.

I don't know if that's a real reason but I rely on canon info for the most part, but I guess I am just wierd that way.

That's actually a valid point Brian.

it would be imposible to do a borg sim...no character development, plus, all the characters would have to speak at the same time...plus, action statements would be "futile" because all drones would know when something happened! So unless you can find a chat host that lets everyone connect cybernetically to the internet...you're out of luck on the Borg idea. :P :P :D

We'd have to invent a Cardassian language first.

Why do we need a language to play a "foreign" sim?

I think a Borg academy would be fun to do once, maybe even something totally off the wall like a Species 8472 academy. As for an advanced sim, it might be cool to have a Vulcan sim, or a Ferengi sim. There is no limit to the imagination.

No but there is a limit to getting people to play those types of games ona Regular basis. I know I wouldn't want to play a ship load of Vulcans, but to each his own.(Talk about Boring! What would you call it? The VSS WATCH-PAINT-DRYING??)

The reason why there are so few non-Federation sims, is exactly as Grommit pointed out earlier: MOst of the new players don't want to or aren't comfortable enough playing as a non-Federation/Starfleet character. Yes once and a while someone will come along and join a non-Starfleet ship first (I was a Rihan before I was a Starfleet Grunt).

And then of course you have then "Human" Syndrome. As you can tell by looking around at most of the ships, most people play humans, why? Because they ARE humans. (Terans :P )

As to the Cardassian comment, no you wouldn't have to invet the Cardassian Language. Yes, we use some Riahn words on the Talon, and they use some Klingon words on the QoB, but that is mostly just for fun, and it is usually just a few words here and there such as Ie, Rhae, Au/Aur, yy'a, Rehhkai, and of course the positions such as D'Heno, Ennarrain, and the rank system.

Which brings another point as to why there are a low number of non-Starfleet sims: Most people really aren't that familier with the non-Federation types, at least enough to feel comfortable roll playing them, and of course they think that you have to be able to speak the language to play it. (You of course don't, and if someone doesn't understand the words, we will either subtitle it, translate it, or just not use them.)

Generally, if there is enough interest to do something, I'd venture to say that it would be considered by the GM Council. :B

Anyway...I think that about does it for this little wrant. :P

Zaphod,

I had suggested a Maquis Sim a while back also. And I wonder if a MACO sim would be doable?

But then again, as everyone here has mentioned in this thread - it all boils down to public interest, availability, and would there be enough information to continue/ think up storylines?

And also like NDak who started out pointy eared and then Fleet, u have players such as myself who go from Human Cadet, to playing a Cat on a non-traditional sim (original series USS Hood).

I am also currently interested in the possibility of another non traditional sim.

Thats what attracted me to simming here in the first place - Thinking out side the box (whether u are on traditional or non traditional sim) - is just plain FUN!!!!! and it helps when the fellow simmers u meet also have fun.

:P

What I'm kinda surprised by is that there isnt a wider variety of federaton classes among the sims. We have one Galaxy, an Ambassador (which used to be a sovvie), a Nebula and two current Sovereigns. Seeing the vast responses on the "starship class" thread started by that illustrious helm officer, you would think there would be more, and more unique classes available here. Granted Aegis has the cool norway class, and the nifty lookin centaur. I mean considering people have poked fun at star trek because the Federation designs a new class every month... I have no problem with the ships we use, i just might expect a little more variety.

Well, a ship class choice would be up to the GM Commanding Officer / GM Executive Officer - the people starting a sim would have first ship choice.

Or a vote among players joining the new sim to pick a ship class.

yes, and i suppose to change it you would have to write a complex plot where the ship gets destroyed but most of the crew survives. Actually, didnt Excallibur change over because people were taking advantage of the advanced technology and explaining everything away?
