Can I be a stick in the mud and raise the question of jobs that nobody in their right mind actually wants to do?  You know, those utterly mindless, repetitive ones?

You mean like Operations?  Engineering?  Helmsman?

Seriously, there is some good discussion here, but I think we're leading away from the original question.  That's the biggest problem with discussing and understanding economics because EVERYTHING depends on EVERYTHING.  And the only way to have a model sophisticated enough to include everything would be to develop a whole other economy.  Much like the only way you could have an accurate map of San Francisco, with all the hills, buildings, etc. would be to build a whole other San Francisco of the exact size.  To do so would defeat the purpose of the map in the first place.

I would invite those who wish to discuss other aspects of 24th century economics to open a more specific thread - distribution of technology, job market, whatever.  If I can sum up the discussion as it pertains to money I think we can say that money in some form DOES exist in the 24th century - if it didn't the Federation would be forced to create it - but that the accumulation of wealth isn't the #1 priority, just one of many others.

ya know i say we go along with dac's monkey thing, it's one of the few posts i read that wasn't as long as the great gatsby and made sense. monkeys are cute, fuzzy, funny, loveable AND EASILY MADE OUR SLAVES! so lets all agree that the star trek economy is based on monkey slave labour, in other words atragon does all the jobs that suck  :)

I read The Great Gatsby in high school.  Sure it's VERY boring, and the movie with Robert Redford wasn't much better, but the paperback was only 200-225 pages long.

And to be honest, FredM's highlighting of Dac's quote gave me a headache.
