Hey, whoh!

OK, in First Contact, Admiral Hayes told Picard he heard some disturbing news from Deep Space 5. The Federation colony on Ivor Prime was destroyed by the Borg, who went from there to Earth on a direct course. After ordering the Enterprise E to the Romulan Neutral Zone Admiral Hayes mobolized a fleet in the Typhon sector. However...

According to Fred's map the Typhon sector is on the OTHER SIDE of DS5 and the Ivor system. Ordering the fleet there would be ordering them to the very edge of known space (not counting the Gamma quadrant) when the Federation capital world is under attack.

You might say that, as Picard said, "Admiral Hayes is mobilizing a fleet in the Typhon sector" means there was already a fleet in that sector and that fleet is being called home to Earth to fight. But then the problem becomes the Borg have transwarp and would get to Earth so much faster than the fleet that it would make no difference.

So what the heck are we to make of all this?

Hey there,

One fact many people forget to realize is that your looking at a flat map when in fact, space itself has more dymensions than what you can put onto a graphic.

As a result, when you look at a globe you have a far better perspective of things than looking at one on a sheet of paper.

Related to your question, the Typon Expanse (not necessarily the Typon Sector)is on the other side of DS5....or at least some of it is. There's nothing to say that the expanse doesn't continue "downward" behind the Federation area visible on the map. I know that's not the most helpful, but keep in mind that according to what you see on the site..there's no shared border between the Romulans/Klingons and Cardassia. It's clear from DS9 there is one of some sort. Hey, Paramount came out with the map, not me.

Also, back to your question, keep in mind that there are references over the "fleet traffic" heard that speaks to the Starfleet's defense being in waves. According to what I recall, the Defiant and ships seen in First Contact were actually part of the third wave/final available reinforcements. As a result, it's not that difficult to assume the Borg cube had already moved quite a distance from the start of the encounter until it reached Sector 001.

Another support of this theory deals with the time taken for the Enterprise to reach the fight. Even at maximum warp, getting from the Romulan Neutral Zone to Earth takes hours.

I just think Fred's map is faulty

Ouch! Smackdown time!

I think the real explanation is this...we are way more nerdy (in a good way) and tuned in to this stuff than writers and producers. They are much more prone to throw in some technobabble (or stellar cartography-babble) wheras one of us would dig deep to make it right, and put the script and stuff together how they really would be.

Ok, so now all we need is a map in globe-format.

yes, a 3-D spatial map of the galaxy would be very very easy to create (and read)
