Return of the Ghosts

The ghosts have been back in the holodeck for a while, and now, they have populated the Ready Room (congrats Travis Kroells and spg!).

GM's - Any idea if the p-link people are looking into this?

I downloaded the latest version of Sun's Java.  I have yet to see whether it fixes the flashing text problem, but (as expected), it does not fix the ghost issue.

The Ready Room is now haunted too!!! ::shivers in fright::

I was wondering why many of us see different ghosts on occasions. (e.g. I'll see ensloami where Garnoopy would not on  his screen). Could it be the poltergiests are determined not just by the P-link Java room, but our browsers as well?

No, I don't think so.  Our browsers have no memories of previous times we've used the chat room.  Especially, since ens_loami hasn't been really logged on for months (so even if the cache had been at fault, at least that name should have slowly disappeared off the ghost list).  Also, the contents of those windows are sent to us from the servers.  My theory is that there's a memory leak in the p-link code where people's names are kept in some buffer after they've logged off (bug#1).   Note that the server actually does figure out that the ghosts are logged off/disconnected - as you can see when you pm a ghost - but does absolutely nothing about it (bug#2).  Then, for some reason or other, the code puts the wrong number of chatters in the room (bug#3) and fills in the missing names with leftover ones from the buffer.  Those are the ghosts.

It's just a hypothesis, but it is plausible and testable.  Clearly, I haven't seen the p-link code, so I can't confirm it.

Well, clearly I'll take your theory over mine! ::recalls his grade in Computer Programing...ugh::

Hey, at least they're friendly ghosts   :)

yeah maybe they're the ghosts of star trek captains and all they want is a friend!

"Pi-card, the friendly ghost. The friendliest ghost you know. He's bald and bad but never gets mad and has his own show."

what? it could work, at least its ratings would beat that casper bugger!

Well, Paramount has asked them to look into it, yes.  Is anything being done in a prompt fashion at PoepleLink...  can't answer that.  I will, however, ask Paramount again.  Thanks.

I'm happy to say it does. Makes life easier for us slow computer folk. Don't have to keep hitting the side of the monitor.

As for the ghosts. I remember one chap by the name of DrJoeManning, haunted the room for weeks some time back. Took me that long to figure out he wasn't real... I kept trying to strike up conversations with him, obviously to no avail. I say, as long as they don't interrupt the chat, they're ok by me.

Please, STSF Gods, don't let this guy be an Engineer or OPS on my ship!

The problem is your hard drive, not your monitor.  And KICKING it is much more effective.

I'm tuning in to watch Picard ghost!!!

At least the ghosts aren't spamming the room. I kinda like em.. makes the place a little bit homey, like we

have a friendly watcher or something. :)

Ah! Well, next time I'll hit the hard drive, then! Not sure about kicking though. Mine is raised on a desk... I would need some karate lessons for an effective kick.
