Battlestar Galactica

78 posts in this topic

Hey there,

Just curious how many tuned in to watch the start of the new Battlestar Galactica on the Sci-Fi Channel? I know many here saw the miniseries last year. Was curious who all tuned in to the first two episodes. :D

Personally, loved it. Hope they do an order for additional episodes PDQ.

I quite enjoyed it. It kept really well to the feel of the original series. I got a kick out of some of the references, like some of the original ships from the 70's series like the transport ship. All and all sci fi did a very good job. I hope to see more soon.

I was more impressed with the mini-series than these first two episodes. It seems to me that they are overdoing the whole Baltar / # 6 bit and rushing into the "Boomer is a Cylon" sub-plot too quickly without letting the suspense build. (I mean really, the fleet found out in the 1st episode that somehow the Cylons were tracking them. Don't you think someone on the Galactica would think of posting a guard by the explosives lockers? Or do they make it a habbit to let people go swimming in the fleet's water supply?)

I'll continue to watch, because it's been around 26 years since we've seen any new Galactica stuff on TV - except for those ridiculous Galactica 1980 episodes - but I hope the storytelling improves.

I did notice something last week, I thought the humanoid Cylon's were a new idea. But, I was watching the Galactica mini marithon on sci fi the other day and they were airing Galactica 1980, which I agree Van Roy was pretty ridiculous. But, they did explore the idea of humanoid Cylon's in the later part of Galactica 1980.

I haven't seen the original Galactica series, but this new one seems excellent. The special effects are cool, as is the music, and overall the show has a great level of drama and tension to the episodes. I saw the miniseries and the first episode. The second episode airs Saturday for me.

I really hope that I get drawn into the show because other than Stargate SG-1, I'm not really following any SF series very closely (I've become a more casual Enterprise viewer). Battlestar Galactica certainly has enough potential to become a great series, so I'm going to continue watching the episodes. :D

I have to say, I'm a fan of the old show. The new one is good, but I do have a beef with them. #1 Boomer would not be a cylon, Thats just not right.

#2 Like what was said earler, A weapons locker would have a guard in times of war and they did say that they were in war.

#3 There would be some kind of military on each ship, and I didn't see that eather.

Being in the military, I can pick this show apart but that was just a few of the things I saw. I like the show and all, but I'm a big fan of the old show to. :D

Wow, OHNO, according to your profile you are almost 100! And still in the military? How do you do it?

I'm still having trouble getting over some of the casting decisions, which is interfering with getting any sort of real 'read' on the show. Making Starbuck female bothers me, although I'm having less trouble with Boomer's gender change. And Olmos, whom I thought would be a good choice for Adama, seems to have been directed to play it very low-key; he lacks the sheer presence that Greene brought to the role.

I enjoyed Battlestar Galactica's first two episodes. I think it is far to early to pass any final judgement on certain characters being focused on more than others. The first two shows some promising writing!

One thing that I will be looking for in the future is Galactica avoiding the second coming of USS Voyager. That is....seemingly Galactica looking the same each episode despite getting holes blown into it....(or out in "Water). An endless supply of Vipers (clearly that is impossible for Galactica ...no replicators). And finally Munitions for Galactica's Guns. Granted she took a full load of weapons departing Ragnar Station, and it is a bit ambiguous what type of weapons Galactica uses (are we talking projectile's or plasma rounds of some sort). Yet in "33" she had to fight off 5 days of attacks..every 33 minutes?

I just hope Mr. Moore remembers Voyager's flaws, and keeps Galactica going realistically given her plight.

I agree.

I mean when you have a show about the future where humans are escaping death and fighting robotic aliens taking over the world who are infultrating their interstellar starships with bio-engineered humanoid bots that look exactly like humans, you just have to wonder what those writers were thinking when they didnt make the show realistic.

Galactica's original series was more or less old-style cowboys in space. The new miniseries and the first 2 episodes of the series are much more "grown up" 21st century sci-fi, with lots of moral ambiguity. I'm enjoying the references to the old series that they throw in, but I'm also accepting it as a different show and enjoying it for what it is.

It's interesting how they're keeping the technology very mysterious. The show has an amazing lack of technobabble.

Yeah, that one scene when the original Starbuck smoked a cigar in the tiny cockpit of his Viper was a little out there.

At least when I did it I had a whole bridge, and it was only a cigarette. :D

me too, except I'm not as hooked on Sg-1 as you. :D So that's why I am trying to get hooked on BSG!

Space channel airs it on saturdays, and so far only one episode has been aired here. :D

The new Battle Star Galactica series does look to be pretty good.. but as Cougar stated, only one episode aired on Space Channel and I missed it :D But.. with a bit of consultations with my TV Guide, I'll try to catch the next episode.

Interestingly I have to wonder if Sci-Fi did a last minute switcharoo to have two hours of Battlestar Galactica. I could of sworn I recall them advertising a lineup of Both Stargate shows followed by Battlestar's Premiere. Did anyone else catch this ?

I was a bit too young for the first BG. Now, I've been catching the old re - runs, and the original just doesn't do it for me.

But, the new mini-series and series? I was liking what I saw. Good stuff. :D

Hey there,

Well, I agree with Vanroy about them overplaying the Baltar/#6 thing. I'm hoping that isn't pushed as heavily in later episodes. Not really sure.

I actually have to say that having watched the original series, I think Olmos is a much better fit for the role than Greene. As odd as it sounds, it almost reminds me of Kirk's attitude in the last two films he was in. This is an older person, who probably didn't want to retire, but saw it was going to have to come. His ship was being put out, so he was going with it. Having probably accepted that (slightly), he now finds himself having to baby sit a fleet. I just honestly think the entire character concept is a lot better.

As for the other casting decisions, I honestly have to say I agree with almost every one. I think the new Apollo has been outstanding. I think having the character be a female adds a new dynamic (not necessarily sexual in nature).

As for consistancy, we'll see. I did notice that during "Water", the Galactica had actual hull damage visible during the exterior shots...evidence of impacts from the earlier episodes. Also, I think it's probably logical to assume the ships hold the ability to carry tons of supplies without the need to refuel/resupply all the time. Will they need to eventually? Sure. However, the ships are designed for long term deep space activity.

One thing I did question (and still do) is this. Given their eventual need for parts and the like, why not head to an old Colonial scrapyard? Try to find a depot which all the old Vipers were tossed into on your way out of the sector? Hum.

As for Stargate, last week was a special thing. Starting January 21st, SG1 will be at 8:00pm ET, Atlantis at 9:00pm ET, Galactica at 10:00pm ET. Supposedly, SG1 will be having a ninth season (though unlikely we'll see Richard Dean Anderson in it, though what's his name from Farscape will be joining SG-1).

Well last time I was at a Pick-n-Pull they didn't even have parts for my 1990 Plymouth Sundance, let alone parts for a Viper.

Then again you also have to remember that the Colonies/Cylons had been in a cease-fire for about 40 years or so. I mean heck, a whole launch bay was converted to a gift shop on a ship that was officially still on active duty! Maybe there weren't any Viper depots or whatever because the authorities no longer saw the need for them.

I know this has nothing to do with the topic, but I noticed most of your posts start with Hey There. :D

Back on topic: Yeah Space only aired 1 ep and I liked it. I wish I got the sci-fi channel.
