Battlestar Galactica

As for the other casting decisions, I honestly have to say I agree with almost every one. I think the new Apollo has been outstanding. I think having the character be a female adds a new dynamic (not necessarily sexual in nature).

1. You meant Starbuck, unless I've really missed something.

2. I've got no objections whatsoever to there being some female Viper pilots in the main cast, which is probably why I'm not having so much trouble with Boomer's gender change. I really liked Sheba in the original series.

3. The new dynamic... yeah, well. As long as it stays non-sexual, I suppose it'll be all right. I have a nightmare about sexual tension between Apollo and female-Starbuck... that's just wrong. I would like to see it play out that a man and a woman can be friends and comrades without being at all sexually attracted to one another. On the other hand, I'm not really seeing any male-male friendships of the depth that the original Apollo and Starbuck had developing, and that's sad.

I disagree. I think adding some sexual tension could make it more interesting, kinda like the sexual tension that Bashir and Ezri Dax had. Just as long as they don't cross that line until very late in the series, if ever, it should be fine.

I was watching Battlestar Galactica last night, an episode focused on the Starbuck character...Apparently she teaches people how to fly Vipers. When she got to the podium, she promptly introduced herself to the Cadets as God and informed her cadets to address herself as such.

Couldn't help but remember my first days at the STSF Academy as a Cadet in that scene.

I was pleased that they managed to get Richard Hatch to take a part on the show. Granted, it was a one episode part, but it is left open, that we may see more of him in the future. You can't have BSG, without the original Apollo!

<old school BSG>

I could really be wrong, but "sexual tension" hasnt come to mind when I watch StarBuck and Apollo.

The both of them remind me of a brother and sister that alternate between cracking each other up and getting on each others cases. And they seem to keep each other in line.

I'm liking all the characters, but especially Starbuck - shes a strong woman, kicks butt in a Viper, and takes nothing off nobody. And I started cracking up during her flight instructer spiel in "Act of Contrition" when she told the cadets "You may call me God".

 Now - Doctor Baltar? I seriously want to take that little worm and knock the ever loving tribble out of him. (Kudos to the actor). And judging by some of the looks that Cmdr. Adama shoots his way> Adama does too.

As for certain characters changing gender? Hmmmm......well, it does seem to be working out okay.

I can't get into old school BG was (Nice seeing Richard Hatch's appearance), but it seems as if the new one has me hook, line and sinker.

Originally there was supposed to be a lot more than what they have shown in the episodes so far. Maybe after we see Starbuck unload some more baggage on the thing with Zac we will see her make some moves on Apollo (or, heck, maybe even Baltar).

For now, however, they are playing the almost brother-sister relationship quite well.

And yes, they found a supurb actor to play Baltar. With the exception of overdoing the # 6 thing, which I have said previously, the character is much more convincing than the "old school" one.

(I mean really, did the original Baltar honestly think the Cylons would spare him and his entire colony?

Baltar: How can you alter one side of a bargain?

Imperious Leader: When there is no other side. You have missed the entire point of the war.

How gullible can someone get?)

Hey I cracked up when she declared herself "God" Fred! Reminded me so much of my early days in STSF. Now the kicker.....Did someone websurf past here for that line. Hehe.

**looks out from potted plant hiding place** - see Fred, Dacotah - Precip thinks so too. The God thing was funny! (Thinking she is now a walking target for the academies, Oh Dear)

Another point - I'm liking the fighter pilot angle.

Does anyone else think that this BG uses more pilot lingo / pilot activity / related pilot tasks? For instance, I don't recall a Flight Deck Chief from original series.

I think some of the call signs are nifty - Apollo, Helo, Crashdown, Flat Top, Boomer, Husher (Adama), Raygun (call sign on StarBucks ship).

I'm loving that little recon fighter that Boomer flies (called a Hornet?) - its been used to gather info and such.

But, putting aside all the action, I heard the show is going for solid character developement too, and from whats been I've seen so far, its great. Nice, solid characters all around. But as mentioned before, I hope the Baltar / Number 6 thing isn't driven into the ground.

ok...I'll start with production aspects as opposed to character development...

I am ::sigh:: an old school Battlestar Galactica fan..really one of the reasons I fell in love with Sci-Fi (along with Space 1999...if you have to ask..you are too young)

However, I love the "feel" and "look"of the show...the action is very John Woo..blurred transitions with erratic and sudden zooms..very gritty...

I am glad they are digging a little deeper and leaving the whole wagon train theme in the past...and I hope that Boxey and Muffit(?) (cant remember) stay in the past as well..they always got everyone into trouble anyway....

One thing that is in stark contrast is the level of Estrogen on the set. If you recall the original series there were two females...one brain..one...well.....Im sure she had a brain....(think 7 of 9...) Now...over half the leads are female....(put away your blasters ladies..Im just making an observation) of course, I guess if you are planning on rebuilding the human race..that is a good thing...

Starbuck as a female...just not right....Boomer as a female, no problem...Boomer as a Cylon..just not right....

Overall, a good series potentially..lets see where they take it....and I close with the words I sooo longed to hear all those years ago...

"There are those who believe... that life here... began out there. Far across the universe. With tribes of humans... who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians... or the Toltecs... or the Mayans... that they may have been the architects of the Great Pyramids... or the lost civilizations of Lemuria... or Atlantis... Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man... who even now fight to survive... far, far away amongst the stars..."

Is it just me or does the new Starbuck have more testosterone than the new Apollo?

Starbuck is a total tomboy, and outspoken. Apollo is so stuffed shirt its not even funny. The boy is going to have an ulcer by 40. She's way more outspoken then him.

As for Boxy and Muffit mentioned by Tauxik? Boxy is there, although he's a bit older and showed some attitude the episode I saw him in (for like 2 seconds). I'm thinking if this kid ever gets into trouble? Oh ya - its going to be big, such as taking a Viper for a joy ride.

As for the fuzzy robot dog? Nope. Not yet. We can only hope. (sarcasm) :P

It has been argued that the orginal Battlestar Galactica was created in the wake of Star Wars and it's huge commercial success. The original Galactica seemed to be more kid tolerant. You had that Muffit (R2 with fur?) and Boxey. Cylons who really weren't scary just walking chrome plated guys with guns. Fighter battles. Essentially a PG show.

This new version is catered to an older audience. I dont understand why certain advocates of the original series seem to object to the Character Relationships and the way they are portrayed in this new telling. I am aware of the Gripes over Baltar and Cylon 6 (the Blonde in the dress). In my opinion the scenes with Cylon 6 are shown reflect Baltar's madness and guilt, and the temptations to lie.

I don't mind Starbuck being recast as a woman because it better reflects the miltary of today as opposed to the late 70's. I dont believe women flew any sort of combat missions back then. Times have changed. I applaud the move to reflect this in the show.

Yes, this show does not have as much action as the old one does so far. But what is lost in Abundant shootouts and Viper scenes is regained in character develpment which is far more important. Also, This show is doing a better job than Voyager ever did in five episodes about the need for logistical supplies..and lack of equipment.

Summing up, the New Battlestar Galactica so far is far more "cerebral" then it's predecessor. It's better written and far better produced. If you havent had a chance to watch the new shows. Sci-Fi is replaying all of them on Tuesday Night. For those who miss Enterprise....check this show out.

I did! And Im not even a fan of the original. I said to myself "now that is cool."

I thought that was a really nice kudo to the original BSG. This new show recognizes and acknowledges their roots. :P

Helo was making toast and using a toaster that looked a lot like the helmets of the original cylons - and it had a red light indicating it was "on".

Even though the light was steady and didn't keep going back and forth like the cys, it was pretty hard to miss the nod at the old school toaster heads.

Buzz!!! Wrong answer. Sheba and several other of the women flew and saved the Galactic when the men all came down with a life-threatening illness.

Lost Planet of the Gods: The Galactica discovers the planet Kobol, where mankind originated. Adama attempts to learn the path its inhabitants took when they journeyed to Earth. Meanwhile, the viper pilots have contracted a disease which forces the fleet to train shuttle pilots (women) to take over as fighter pilots.

Actually what I was referring to was the absence of Women as Combat Pilots in Real life around the late 1970's. You are of course right on the money regarding the episode Lost Planet of the Gods where women were rushed into Viper flying. The New series of course has Women already as frontline combat pilots much like they are today.

PS- Recall the scene with the High G suites they had the ladies wearing? Of course you didn't see Starbuck and Apollo in those!

There is a marathon of Five Episodes being shown on Tuesday night. That one should be the last one of the evening. So you can catch the cleverly done inside gag then. Love to know who wrote that Toaster scene in there.

I'm also an old school Battlestar Galactica fan, and yes Space 1999 too. (Had one of the big 3 foot long toy Eagles when they came out) The cinematography in the new series is excellent. I agree with your John Woo comparison. I dissagreed with them making Starbuck and Boomer women when I saw the making of show before they aired the miniseries. But, as I watched the first hour of the show, I changed my mind. They kept Starbuck's rouge attitude very close to the original, and Boomer's character is developing very well. I do not like the idea of Boomer being a Cylon, but if they can develope the plot around it well, it will work. She already suspects she is a cylon, and is grieving over it. The human clashing with the machine, almost like 7 of 9's conflict in Voyager. As for Boxey and Muffit. They did re introduce Boxey in the miniseries when Boomer takes the survivors from Caprica. It was a very cute homage to the original, but I'm glad they didn't dwell on it like the original series did. I enjoy the new series more each time I watch it. I think they're doing a great job. ::puts two cents into the bucket::

Good thing too. I doubt Apollo could fill out the female suit very well.
