Graduations

Don't anyone get offended here now...i assume many of us Star Trek Nerds are also Computer Nerds. Could a program be written that would record only the messages put into the specific subroom between

===^===BEGIN SIM===^===

and

===^===PAUSE SIM===^===

that wouldnt be that hard would it?? ;)

It is when multiple chatrooms are being logged simultaneously. One of our cleverer GM's has a hotshot way of seperating out chat text, but frankly I couldn't *begin* to decipher his instructions, lol. Though... I frequently wonder why there is a need to re-read chat logs anyway. As a player I never did, and as a host I just take good notes during or after the session. Let me know because I'm sincerely curious: How many of you go back and read sim logs, and why?

I've gone back to look at chat logs a few times, but not too often.

One of the reasons I like them is for when I miss a sim. When I miss, I usually do go back over the chat log sent out, so that I know what happened and what is going on.

Did you know...everyone can make their own chat logs?

There's a clipboard feature on the chat room panel that you can open up. As long as you keep it open it will continue to log the text. When the sim is done, just ctrl a (select all), ctrl c (copy) and ctrl v (paste) into a new document. Voila, chat log (plus your PM convos)! ;)

Actually, if your private messages are being logged by GMs..thats an incredible breach of privacy and I'm personally concerned that Ive never heard of it before.

Now of course your chat room is your chat room...but there are situations where players may be using your room during a sim and having a private conversation, and the very idea that the GM, Webby, or anyone can have access to it is offensive.

There needs to be a clear statement on the access page that NO privacy exists in the chatroom, period. Even if the GMs don't bother to look at it, if they have access to it then no privacy exists. It has nothing to do with safety, or preventing 'illicit' content...it has to do with GMs, who are just ordinary people like all the players, having access to private conversations. Its wrong and unethical.

If you record your PMs in any way, make sure everyone knows it. People's private messages are none of your business, period.

PS: I may have misinterpreted what was said...but I'd be curious to know if this is true or not.

To answer Huffs question, I personally have used chatlogs to review a previous sim and I feel they are the essense to a sims history.

Ok, before the villagers arrive with forks and torches, let's clear this up ...

Everything said publically in one of the three chat rooms (Lobby, Holodeck, Ready Room) is automatically recorded into a log file. In order to provide a sim log, the specific room has to be extracted from the log, then the specific sim has to be extracted from the room.

Private Messages do not appear in this log.

There is a clipboard feature of the chat room so that you can record your own log sessions. If you do that, any message you participate in will be recorded. This includes PMs and chat room text.

However, please keep in mind that the person you're sending the PM to may be logging their chat, and if they do, you have to trust them to keep your confidentiality. This is always true of any online information, just ask Martha Stewart.

Now, back to proding us to extract the sim logs more frequently. ;-)

It's funny, but when Martha Stewart decided she would not appeal the court's decision and decided to take her punishment immediately, the stock price of marthastewart.com shot up!

Now what does this have to do with chat rooms? I don't know, it's 4:56 AM and I have been up all night. ;)

Thats good to know Moose.

My only question is...if hosts are not extracting logs for every sim, why not? Now of course Im bias because I believe chat logs are what make up a sims real documented history...but it is also my opinion that hosts should be required to log chats and submit those to a database, public or private to their crew.

And if its too difficult, maybe the chatroom needs to be changed to make this easier on the hosts. I can just imagine all the history being lost if you are not saving these precious logs.

My understanding is that is it's not quite as easy as it sound Vex...the version the GM's get (I yeild of course to corrections) has everythign that has been said in all three chatrooms for the day...not just the hour that they are trying to log.

Yeah, exactly.. so they have go to through the pretty tedius process of seperating everything that's been said on other chatrooms that don't pertain to their own sim. For example, the Republic... when Blu has to compose the chatlog for that sim, she'd have to seperate everything that's been said on the Manticore, since they both sim at the same time. Which I imagine takes almost forever since they have so many people there.

Plus...the chat room logs weren't changed by us, but by the chat room provider.

but I thought there was a limit on how far you could scroll up. I'll let you know how it turns out.

There is a limit, so what you have to do is be very careful when copying and pasting. :D

I think that they should slow the graduation thingy down because there is a limited number of sims and a heck load of Cadets to please. It took me forever to graduate.

Thats a shame...but since we have our own chat rooms (ST.com has been 'upgrading' their for how long now? hehe) why not just switch to a provider that actually serves our needs, namely allowing us to record chatlogs in an efficient manner.

Hey there,

Personally, I find the provider we have does an outstanding job at matching our needs. This is mixed with the fact our rooms operate under the donated time/talent/treasure of our Webmaster, without the need for banner advertisements and provide many features I think people enjoy.

Is the chat log situation a headache? It is. However, the new version of the rooms features a chat log system that was a drastic improvement over the old. Will the next update do the same? Logical to think so.

I wish the GMs would send the Transcripts. I love reading the stupid, smart, and the other things I did during the sims that I really never noticed that I did while simming.

I like digging up past fun sims for reference occasionally. They aren't a necessity, but they're a fun luxury. :D
