Graduations

49 posts in this topic

Well, I like to pose an interesting issue. You see, everytime I get on the forum, I swear someone has graduated. So, I think --this is just opinuendo--, but I think that the GM's are getting a little soft. I mean, it took me 54 sims (that might have just been that I....well, wasn't very good and kept getting in trouble), but I have seen people here graduate in 10. It just seems that something strange is going on.

Na, it's not that strange. Some people just take onto simming faster than others. Some people might take 10 or 50. Hey, I graduated in 4. But, really.. though.. 54 sims, I'd have given up long before that ;)

It could also be that we just have more cadets now to put through to chain toward graduation. ;)

The standards have not changed. It still takes the same requirements to graduate. Those that take longer to graduate either do not meet those requirements or refuse to meet those requirements but still pursue graduation.

Of course what was really funny was Vex Xiang. He didn't take the longest to graduate, but he certainly took longer than most.

And a few months after he graduated a ship he was already on joined STSF. He went from Ensign to Lieutenant Commander just like that. ;)

Actually, I think the record actually stands at 156 sims

;) ;) ;) whoa. 156 sims??

I stumbled across the forums back in July, thought about joining, "officially" joined November 21, and after 6 sims graduated December 6. Im sure all the GM's have experience enough to know when someone is ready correct?

I am now posted to USS Hood and am now learning to advance sim :) . I was doing this: <AMO> after name, and told "You dont have to do that, we know who u are" LOL!

I agree with what has been said: depends on a peep, some graduate after 5, 15, 20, 50 sims. U learn in the Academy.

And of course, I wouldn't recommend typing something like this: <SCI> :: I grab a tribble, and bean the CO with it:: Not a good thing. :D

Heck, when I first graduated and joined the Reaent Fred threatened to take my <HELM> away from me and beat me with it.

Come to think of it, I think he even said that in character! ;)

But, unless I am mistaken, I notice the message boards are not regularly updated with academy logs or graduation announcements.

Graduation announcements are usually posted once a month by FredM, though because of the holidays last month, December and January will probably be together. As far as the logs are concerned, they are a little harder to post than they used to be back with StarTrek.com. It takes me close to 30 minutes to properly edit them.

From what I understand of the "new" process, the GMs would have to download a daily chat log with all 3 chat rooms combined. Keep in mind that there are often individuals, both members and non-members, who use our chat rooms during the daytime for their own purposes. (In fact I know of one group who had plans to use our rooms for sort of a "startrek.com reunion". They ended up using a different chat site however.)

I imagine the daytime chat traffic is distinguishable from the STSF traffic by the time stamps, but then the GM has to manually separate what happens in the Lounge and Holodeck and Ready Room - including all the transfers between rooms as people are logging in and out - to identify the chat traffic specific to that sim.

After that is done, the GM also has to filter out all of the PM traffic. Again, this is probably indistinguishable from the "normal" traffic.

So when you consider all that has to happen to produce an accurate and useable chat log I'm sure some GMs ask if it is realistically worth the effort. At that point it becomes a cost-benefit analysis. Some GMs feel it is worth the effort. Others, however, look at the time factor to produce the log (cost) and that few people actually view the log (benefit) and make a calculated decision that their time is better spent helping STSF in other ways.

Does the situation suck? You bet. However, I'm not going to comment on if there is a better solution available because I just don't know.

I was Mission CO when you graduated so I posted it under Starfleet Academy (if I remember correctly). However, I'm not a GM so I couldn't post it in the "Graduation Announcements" section because that is a GM-only topic.

Actually, I think the record actually stands at 156 sims

I think that is the record # of sims of people trying to graduate who actually DO graduate. Who knows how many people have more sims than that who are still trying.

Rumor has it that "Voric, Ruler of Rivendell" still sims occasionally under a different name. I don't know if he is still trying to graduate or not.

I know who he is. ;) He's from Startrekfans.net.

He joined back up here a month ago but then disappeared.

And I'm sure that is one of the reasons some GMs don't post the logs. It makes sense that they would be able to access the PMs between players for security reasons - after all, we don't want people to be using our chat interface for illicit activities or whatever - but you're right, it would be unfair if a message intended for private ears was inadvertently made public.

"Never do anything in private that you would not do in public." I shall endeavor to remember this advice.

And that's why I burp and fart and pick my nose and scratch my butt in public too. ;)

Wow, I never realized what a painstaking process distilling the log was.

I just assumed that there was some sort of software you could turn on just to record the text in a certain room at a certain time. And you're saying the PM's are also viewable? "Never do anything in private that you would not do in public." I shall endeavor to remember this advice.

Is there any way I can record the session myself? Isn't there a cache in Java?

There really is so much one misses and I love reading the log. I used to debate religion and politics in the Yahoo chat rooms and I thought I was a fast chatter able to multitask quickly, but I never had to employ my imagination so rapidly.

May the Great Bird of the Galaxy bestow his blessing upon the GM's.

Everything is logged in some form or another. I do use an alternate system to do my logs...I use the clipboard feature. Unfortunately, as tlara alluded to, all of my private message conversations end up mixed into the text. Therefore, I must go into the log and pull out what I need to in order to preserve the confidentiality of what is said between GMs or GMs and players.... This, as you can imagine, can take a long time.
