University Servers

Hey guys,

Still having trouble with the university servers, they don't let me open the chat page, does anyone know a way to bypass this sort of security thing? I know I've used pages online to bypass this sort of thing in high school in chatting but I've forgotten the page I used! Anyone got a clue? If I can't find a way I can't come back till after...next summer, which not only sucks, Its a real pain in the tuckus!

Cheers and a happy new year,

Eric

Heh,

A question for your question! Are you trying to access the chatroom from an entirely different server than before? You mention this as a "university server" as opposed to something in High School. Am I following you correctly? Are you able to access other websites/message boards from your "university server"?

Could be a Firewall issue maybe? I know some university servers that have special software that blocks out those kind of things. That's really all I can think about. Unless it's a Java thing.. I hope that's not it though.. have you tried to contact your school's technical support team? Anyways, goodluck man.. I'm stumped. Heh.

Yeah Seiben, looks like a firewall issue meant to protect the school's computer network. Which is not good for Mr Images ^_^ High School probably had one that you could sneak around. I imagine Faculty and perhaps Grad Students are the only ones with a UserID that gets around it.

i know find a cyber cafe and sim there

At 4:00 AM? Images is in England man. Since I don't know what kind of firewall software you have, I can't be much help in suggesting a way to go around it so all I can suggest is perhaps investing in a laptop, and subscribing to one of your local ISPs. Soz mate, But I'm sure the other computer nerds in here can help you more than I can. ^_^

When I was in school the College of Business had the best server on campus, and it *still* sucked. I don't know anyone who used it. We all went with our own ISPs. We had to, as our server was often down for weeks at a time.

You would think a school that prides itself on being the hub of Silicon Valley would have had better IT facilities.

It just annoys me, because I finally have the web and can't sim! I'm finally back for the love of Bob! The Uni doesn't really bend on this. For more details its a LAN Proxy server. If anyone on STSF knows about this type of stuff, please message me or mail me as soon as possible. It would be so cool if I could go back to Challenger by this evening.

Cheers,

Eric

i use mozilla firefox, thats what i had to get to make the chatroom work, if its a java related software issue, that may be the key...or not, its an attmpt at least

Dunno if this will help or not, but Mozilla Firefox Rocks! Anyone one the Arc knew that over the summer i had the reoccuring revolving door problem, but since I've downloaded FF there have only been about 2 instances of that, in 4 months! ^_^

Hope you work this out! :)

Hey there,

A thought...a program I used to use at work called Analog X Proxy Server allowed your computer to act as a web server itself. I'm not certain if it would work in this case, but I believe someone used the program before to do something similiar.

Another idea, one I know someone else uses. You could purchase digital service on your cell phone. When it's time to sim, use the cell phone and a cheap dialup Internet company.

Eric,

I would strongly reccommend against downloading any proxy server to combat your university's server. If it's anything like the States, universities can track those things in a hurry and...well...they usually won't hesitate to expel you. Here's a better, more legal option. Purchase a cellular phone that has the ability to connect to the internet via your computer. I have a motorola that has this ability. Then, if you have a plan that allows for free nights and weekends you can connect during sim time for no charge. The only bummer is...the speed is 14.4 kps, but you can get phones that can connect at ISDN speeds.

It sounds like it might be easier and cheaper to go with a commercial ISP - assuming you have your own computer and aren't using the computer lab or something like that.

Hmm... My brother used some type of HTTP Tunneling program to get past his college's proxy server (but he did this so he could connect to Napster... heh). I'm not sure what the program was called, but the school really didn't care as long as you didn't tell all of your friends about the program, too. The main reason they blocked the download ports, though, is because the students were tying up the dedicated T1 line. ;)

Have you tried asking one of the server junkies to open up some of the 9000-row ports?

Ooh, did it tunnel for java? I get the login screen but THAT'S it! I used a piece o software called hopster so i could use msn but the java is the pain. The strange thing is Yahoo messenger works and that's java based isn't it?

I am going to echo what Grom mentioned earlier, do not mess with a university server. Simming is just a game and having your computring priviledges revoked at school (or worse) would be more of a headache then missing a siming. My motto is IRL first. I hope some of the suggestions above that do not involve getting around a school's firewall help.

Hey there,

Just speaking from the other side of the coin, as someone who's in charge of technology at a school, nothing I have seen written or suggested here would violate most school's technology code of conduct. Each one is unique however, so you have to check.

Nyah, there's no problem with Uni folks, the guy who told me about the other software is my head lecturer! There's just no dealing with the server guys though, THEY are mean!
